There is a guy called Subaru Mike that has quite a few videos of Subaru engine swaps and head gasket repairs. He’s a wealth of knowledge. He’s worth searching for on here.

Yes, the engine has to be taken out to remove the cylinder heads on a Subaru engine although Ivan from Pine Hollow Auto diagnostics has managed to be able to do it with the engine installed in the engine bay. My brother purchased a 2000 model Subaru Forester for $3,500 AUD over a decade ago after the seller got the cylinder heads rebuilt after the valves got bent in it because the old owner cheaped out on a new timing belt & tensioner kit, while they're not cheap at over $1000 AUD rebuilding the cylinder head cost as much as my brother bought the car for, I'm pretty sure about that. My brother bought a timing belt kit at "mates rates" for $900 AUD when he replaced the timing belt in it . Well, the cylinder heads got rebuilt twice because my brother ran the EJ20J engine on LP gas & guess what, when my dad who was driving his Holden ( Chevrolet) Colorado at the time drove up there separately to my brother & his wife as well as my niece the engine dropped an exhaust valve & my brother even tried to buy a used ignition coil to fix the problem. They went to visit my now late grandmother about 500 kilometres away from home & when my brother was coming back the engine in the Subaru lost power & began to misfire. He drove it to my cousins partners mechanical workshop so him whose a Subaru trained technician could diagnosed the fault which was low compression on one cylinder. Yes, her partner did his apprenticeship with their local Subaru dealer ,he used to drive a Liberty RS turbo until it aged & he began to have problems with it. Back to the Forester,my brother left it at his workshop then he came home with my dad & he decided to get him to fix it up although it cost more than the car was worth to repair it,my cousins partner got the cylinder heads rebuilt with new valve springs, valve guides, new valves & new valve seats then he resealed the engine & replaced the clutch, timing belt, etc with new items, they had to go back up to near the Queensland border in Australia to pick the Forester up. The cost to fix that car up at just about cost price was you guessed it,$3,500 AUD which cost more than the car was worth. I have had to fix it up since with a used throttle body because the throttle body shaft was sucking in air due to the throttle body being worn out & one of the LP gas injectors also got stuck in it as well so I freed it up the best that I could. Yes, against my cousins husbands advice my brother still ran it on LP gas after it was repaired,I did a compression test on both occasions that I repaired it & it was 200 PSI at 400,000 kilometres on the original EJ20J engine. There's a man in Slovenia who owns exactly the same car which got stuck at 999,999 kilometres with the original engine in it because a digital odometer doesn't clock back to Zero kilometres !

Back in the late 70s my brother had a New Subaru Brat. It was just out of warranty. Blew a head gasket. The dealer quoted him a high price. he said it was so high it exceeded the cost of a rebuild on his SBC. They said they were going to throw in a valve job. He had a local garage change the head gasket and traded it off.

jdm 2wd transmission always throw the tcc code on the 1998-2001 honda crv 2wd i swapped mine in over 100k ago. and i still works. if you swapped in jdm its most likely ok. does transmission shift 1-4? does the toqure converter lock up in 4th? if it does its fine. if you need to pass emmissions reset the computer turn the overdrive Off drive the car over 50 mph until the completes it loop and i will pass emissions . It works everytime

Aftermarket gaskets have. They use Multi Layer Steel with more layers and better materials. SO a good quality replacment kit should solve the issue.

@@RoadsideRescueyes and no. Yes this (mls gasket) is a longer lasting solution. It’s however not a permanent fix. Which is why Subaru redesigned the engine in 2012.
