I totally went through all the 3 problems you mentioned. But the most frustrating part was interviews, safe to say that each set of DS interviews in every company were different and most times it was a surprise and my preparation would rarely match. So I had to be extremely over prepared to cover all edge cases to clear and outshine in the interviews. Standardization is badly needed for DS interviews as compared to even other data roles like DE or DA, etc.

Thank you for this video. Im graduating with a MS in data science and the job search is just frustrating. Really a huge struggle. I applied for data scientist positions to a lot of companies but some interviews were more computer science heavy, others were more machine learning heavy, and some were very sql heavy. As a human being, i cant be an expert at everything so its very demotivating. Not only that, no company wants freshers. They want experienced data scientists so even getting my foot in the door was a nightmare. I got a position in an ok company. Not my first choice but until I can get something better, I’m stuck here. I agree that theres not as much demand as people say there is. The interviews i’ve gone through were just a huge rigamarole of either standard questions like bias-variance and explaining some basic stats to advanced statistician questions where they would ask me to whiteboard various distributions and which one would work best. Not to mention, every position requires an MS or PhD. Its really just a nightmare

@@stephanieherrera2468 i wouldnt have done DS. Would have done Business Analytics or something more specific to data analytics. Focused more on data analysis skills like Tableau, SQ, etc. Companies really don’t care much what’s gonna happen in the future. They are more interested in the present metrics. So those skills are more valuable and in demand compared to DS skills. Most modelling work requires a phD. Otherwise you’ll just be relegated to a model evaluator.

To be honest the whole Data Science job titles have so much of overlaps its creates confusion. E.g., a Data analyst job at a company makes you do audit and coordination and won't let you access to 80% company's data. Domain specific analyst is not pure Data analyst roles, Domain specific roles have only 30-40% analyst duties and many times only on excel. I am trying so hard to get a serious Data analyst entry level job where I can take my basic SQL, python skills to next level. But it's seriously tough.

DS jobs are really limited and there are so many people (tech/non-tech) trying to get into this field because of its hype that its becoming really hard to secure a DS role in the industry. I work as a Data Scientist in an IT firm with 4-5k employees out of which only 40-50 employees are Data Scientists while majority of other employees are working in software development roles.

Exactly, some companies are chasing buzzwords without fully understanding the job family and/or figuring out a plan how to grow people in the data ladder.

Did you find it hard to job search as a data scientist? Edit: My goal in sharing this video is not to discourage anyone but rather spread awareness on the not so ‘sexy’ parts. It’s pretty great job family to be in. All the best in your job search!

You being a DS, maybe you can share what you think are the defining skills, job responsibilities that REALLY separate the two fields. I think the titles keep getting used interchangeably, which seems not correct. I would love to know more about just how the community separates the two.

True, most of the titles don't match the job descriptions. This thing is killing me. Even the experiences don't fit the job descriptions.

@@maheshreddy4080 I have been studying DS for 2 years for my MS degree and all I see is everything is far easier if you know how to code and SWE principles. You can also take stat. course and DS-related courses while studying CS and maybe move on to DS later on but with a strong background in CS you will find jobs easily. Your personality is also important DS requires more interaction with other people either during data gathering or analysis or later on presenting your analysis etc. There are some other channels like Tina Huang, she explains the differences and how you can decide which one is better for you. I highly suggest you do a good search to get to know yourself, what you know exactly then decide what to study. PS: if your BS was in CS then go for DS masters IMHO.
