Expressing your emotions is important-not just for your mental health, but for your physical health as well.

Expressing emotions doesn’t mean you should *act* on it. You might feel angry but that doesn’t mean you should punch someone. The idea is to acknowledge your own emotions, perhaps by saying, ‘I’m angry about this’, or ‘I feel disappointed’, rather than denying you feel the emotion. Telling yourself “I’m fine” when it’s not true is not healthy. Also, acknowledging your emotions at the time you feel them helps you get over them faster, so your feelings don’t linger and fester.

Lol Lol I’m not sure sadness brought on by an imbalance of brain chemistry can be treated exactly the same as sadness brought on by a sad life event (though there may be overlap) Medication is probably more helpful. I’m not a medical professional.

Yeah, this sounds like a possible lack of socialization, or learning how to respond appropriately to others through modeling. Perhaps consider **why** this other person is sharing their thing, what **you** want out of the exchange (feel closer? help out? glean support or understanding?), and I guess just try to stay friendly and helpful, reflecting back happy or sad feelings with your body posture and what-not. Social mirroring is an important skill!

Your first sentence nails it. Chronic childhood trauma meant that my priorities were not what a child's should have been. My priorities were my parents' twisted dynamic rather than learning about the world and the people in it. Still, there's hope...and my therapist.

As a person of British heritage, I wholly disagree with the subject of this episode. It has been well established that only legitimate way to process emotion is through gin (or a strong bitter), passive-aggressive behavior, deadpan comedy, the colonization of a quarter of the planet, or by humiliating the French. I sometimes psych myself out so much that I miss obvious things, and while I do learn from my mistakes... eventually, I feel like I should _do better._ Well, I think everyone get this feeling at some point. Expressing your emotions is helpful from a social perspective and may drop stress levels, BUT it also digs in the Neural Pathways for those feelings making them easier to slip into in other situations. So while expressing your emotions could help in a short-term way, I'm under the impression over the long run it makes things worse if done regularly

Jocko Willick talks about that last point in his podcast. About how expressing emotions that might register as say a 2 or 3 aren't worth expressing , tend to be normalized (i.e people who get hangry know when and why they get hangry). Learning to cope and rationalize is important with those feelings. In regards to intense feelings like that of a an extreme stressor like death or depression or other things you should try to 'outsource' your strength and talk about it.

That's good advice for physical health but still not mental health. My hand was covered in cuts after punching a door into submission once. Big mistake lol.

I haven't expressed most emotions (apart from the 'good' one) for around 6 years and now I'm anxious, depressed and suicidal... Yeah, cry when you're sad, scream when you're angry and try to understand your feelings...

カバルナハンナミツチ. Then deny bottle up and ignore all emotion. Worked for me for the entirety of my sentient existence and so far I haven’t turned into a wrist cutting emo yet. You appear to have this conviction that emotion is something to be dumped on any willing person in sight but that doesn’t fix anything

You can express emption with many ways, not just with facial expression, In reality facial expression could make someone looks naive and easily manipulated

As Brit herself demonstrated here, I hate how it seems to have become the cool thing to reject emotions or the "feels" as some call them. It really annoys me when a watch a sad video and someone says something like, "I'm not crying. You are crying." or they make up some excuse for why they have watery eyes. I don't trust people who reject emotions. That is not a healthy behaviour.

sweiland75 I think there's value in portraying insecurity over expressed emotions. Like it or not, people aren't necessarily comfortable with highly emotional people. There's moments where being emotional yourself can make it harder to give empathy back and there's moments where you need to let your emotions be your emotions and expressing them emotionally. It's emotional intelligence versus 'radical emotional honesty'. And emotional intelligence means knowing what the right moment is to give way for an emotion and when to compartmentalize it. It also means not deliberately making yourself feel something to get something out of another person. Such as not making yourself angry or making yourself overwhelmed because it gets you out of doing something you don't like. There's a lot of sides to this obviously, you probably didn't need my rant to know that. But to your point, I think that there's a time and a place for everything and that's cool.

It's important, so that society and bullies can then tell you how wrong you're feeling, and should be feeling differently. Abuse them for their own gain. Imagine if everyone stopped expressing, where would the bullies go on? We can't have that, we need bullies to ruin your mental health everyday! So that there's balance in the force. And you know who is boss. How would they ever get to feel better themselves? Ugh, it's so f'ing selfish!

I'd call this a false dichotomy. Expressing anger makes you very good at being angry, it doesn't make you any good at achieving serenity.

Found a "small" positive "correlation" between suppressing emotions and mortality in a study of only 111 people.... That is barely worth noting. Just think there might be some bias in this episode based on what we think should be true.

But I have to wonder, whether this research showing the benefits of expressing emotion could be replicated with success in cultures, wherein emotional expression isn’t idolised (eg. Markus & Kitayama 1991), as it sometimes is in the western macroculture, as I will call it; I have to wonder, whether the meaning we culturally ascribe to emotional expression nigh fundamentally changes, how it affects us.

Or maybe people with low emotional suppression scores have fewer negative emotions that they need to suppress, and it is often appropriate to express their positive emotions? My point is maybe it's not the emotional suppression that is unhealthy, but the things that course you to have the feelings you are suppressing, or the things that course the suppression itself, that is bad?
