What are you risking when you try to replace your own garage door torsion springs? Replacing garage door springs can be one of the most dangerous repairs a technician can perform. An average garage door spring has at least 100 lbs of torque pressure. But if you own a custom wood door then those springs on average are rated at 1000 lbs. Thus if you plan on tackling this job then please understand you're proceeding at your own risk. (*there's a longer version of this video on Instagram Reels and TikTok that offers more context)

My door failed a few week back and I contacted a door company. The last time my door failed I had them replace the tension springs because thats dangerous work. That cost me $425. 3 years later my door cable got tangled up and I had them replace it. let see a $20.00 part and 40mins work time cost $475. I work building maintenance I have strong commonsense, the proper tools, as well as experience working with my hands! I will never call a door company again. Yea, working with a tension spring is dangerous, so is replacing an electrical outlet, installer a gas furnace, hot water tanks, and installing new plumbing pipe. It’s not hard. And as long as you’re not careless and ignorant, it’s not dangerous either. Dont get in the way or torsion bars, make sure the door is set properly and cables and pulleys aren’t going to move etc… I don’t understand the “omg it’s so dangerous, NEVER do it yourself” crowd, it is dnagerous if you don’t do the research on how to do it, and don’t take the proper precautions. Other than that, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Here in So Cal, the garage door contractor will charge $440 (total ripoff) to replace 2 springs, that's how much they charged my sister, I had one broken spring last week, I bought the spring from Amazon and the wind tools, Total was $86. Thanks for the feedback. So $440 is a great deal for a pair of springs if they offer a higher cycle life. When it comes to torsion springs, there are certain variables that will not always apply to every garage door. I had a gentleman post a comment that his local garage door contractor wanted to charge him $350. But he considered it too high a cost and thus was determined to do the job himself. I can't find his post anymore. Still, I do not recommend that just anyone or everyone repair torsion springs on their own. Too much could go wrong.

The hardest part of the whole project was finding springs that you could get in a reasonable amount of time. Truly not a difficult job nor does it take up alot of time. Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience. It's not a difficult process. Of course not all garage doors and by extension not all springs are the same. Standard 207 to 218 springs are accessible online. Yet when it comes to getting higher cycle springs and heavier doors there are a number of risk factors to take into consideration. I once called a professional because I let this guy scare me, I ended up with a bill over a 1000 dollars and two springs that looked different. I did the torsion spring replacement on my mom's 8' single insulated door a few days ago. It took me a couple of hours but I also pulled all the bearings and greased them really well. I had done Wayne Dalton Torquemaster springs on my own home a couple of times and actually found the torsion spring easier to do. It definitely requires more upper body strength though once you get up into the high 20's of winding. After that job I was working on a table saw. The table saw is in the same category as a torsion spring. It demands your undivided attention and if you choose not to give it you'll pay the price.

Thanks for the feedback. Thanks for your feedback. We understand that the cost of repairs can sometimes seem high, especially when you're able to fix something yourself for less. Garage door professionals are trained and equipped to handle a wide range of garage door issues quickly and safely. We can also diagnose any underlying problems that might be causing the spring to break and fix those to prevent future issues. We also offer guarantees on our work. In some cases, a DIY repair may be a suitable option, but it's important to consider the complexity of the repair, the potential for further damage, and your own safety. In fact, ... How do you know if your garage door is completely safe after this repair? Keeping in mind the complexities of major home repairs, what is your piece of mind worth? Lastly, what warranty or guarantee do you have after making your own repair? Ultimately, the decision of whether to hire a professional or fix the garage door yourself is up to you. But at the very least many might read this post and consider the questions we have presented.

Is $1800 dollars reasonable to pay a professional to get a garage door overhauled? New Rollers, new spring, and hinges?
@sosgds
@sosgds Жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. It's a legitimate question. And it really depends on what type of value is being provided to the service. For example will the overhaul upgrade include higher end parts such as nylon bearing rollers and high cycle torsion springs? In addition to that you want to ask about the warranty and if they are offering service maintenance visits to your door. Another thing to take into consideration is the area where you live. Some dealer contractors tend to charge a little bit more if you have a custom door or specific needs for your garage door. And last but not least consider the option of negotiating the price. Ask what the competitor would charge for the same service. I can tell you that in my particular area here in Southern California this type of service is usually between $1200 to about $1,500 including parts and labor.

I've been doing doors for over 30 years and I can tell you about thousand stories where people try to do it themselves and got hurt. It's just not a good idea. If you don't know what you're doing, don't touch them. The most gruesome story i have is a man who had his one side to cable was off. The other side was still on and tight. Door was crooked in the opening. Obviously the man decided to take the tight cable off. Well it's under lots of pressure and somehow he got that bottom bracket off but when he did the thing flew up towards him. Hit him in the face and ripped half of his face off for real. That really happened. The man had worked for the LAPD he no longer does cuz he can't even hold down a desk job cuz he's so hammered now.. It's like the man says in the video. Ultimately, it's your door. I promise you though. I will promise you now if that spring gets away from you or if one of those cables get away from you, you will lose whatever part of your body it hits. That's a promise. If you don't know what you're doing, you should not be touching even if you think you know What you are doing? I promise you you don't.. Even if you have a guy's come out there and make it look easy. You don't know. We're trained. We've been doing this for years..I can't emphasize enough.. How truly dangerous it is

When she opened her front door to greet me I saw her face battered, bruised, and scared. My first thought was that she was in an abusive relationship. But the first words out of her mouth in a slurred speech was, "My garage door did this to me". Sure enough, she tried to get her door down by releasing tension to the bottom brackets. The bracket flew up and ripped her face open. I cannot make this up. I broke my heart seeing her so badly harmed from simply trying to get her door down.

I'm curious to know if any professionals are watching this and what they are charging currently for let's say a 16x7 lightweight metal door for a pair of Springs installed. Said door would be maybe 170 lb. I'm charging about 300 here in South Carolina installed

Not a residential installer. We do commercial, we charge 600 just for the scissor lift. These are verticals lift doors btw. Springs run from $200+ ea.

Just finished doing this today. Not a big deal for me since I love DIY, but I will say having right tools is an absolute must. DO NOT skimp on the winding bars. That will be the single most important tool you need for your safety. And...obviously...stay off of the side of the winding path. Hire a contractor if you don't feel confident doing any of the steps.

Literally "make sure the winding bars are fully seated and don't put yourself on the tension side" is literally ALL you need to do to make it a completely safe job.

People rarely value expertise and practical wisdom. But the level of skill that is required to take care of the entire garage door system will surprise them. Throw in the fact that most garage door repairs are band aids. They end up paying double for a spring job and now a whole new garage door replacement.

“Paying a little more.” Give me a break, this job doesn’t require a C professional at all. The hardest part is finding replacement sirens because the industry perpetuates this façade that is incredibly dangerous. While it is dangerous, if taking the proper precautions, it’s no more dangerous than using jack stands to change the oil in your car.

This cityboy millennial did it on both of his 140lb when one broke (did the other just because why not, got the longer springs too in the hopes they last longer) with ZERO issues. Like a 15 minute youtube video outlines the entire process and as long as you make sure the levers are seated properly while winding its about impossible to injure yourself.
