Why Is Minecraft So Nostalgic?

Minecraft: Throughout the game's lifetime, Mojang has certainly refined it into one of the most nostalgic games of all time. But it's bizarre, how could Mojang have possibly engineered the game into a masterpiece that makes you yearn for the great past you once experience on the game? Did Mojang develop and refine the game with the intention of inducing maximum nostalgia - A slightly different strategy to keep players returning after many years? In this video - I attempt to answer the question: Why is Minecraft so Nostalgic?
Thank you guys for watching, like and sub if you enjoyed, Sunny XO ❤

Minecraft represents life. Life is not scary. It is a playground, full of nostalgia, waiting to hit you hard where it hurts. Life is vicious, but only when we are ready for viciousness. Life gets hard if we are lazy. Life feels over if we are hurt and die inside, but we can always return with the Respawn button and pick up the stuff we lost.

I think Minecraft is so nostalgic because it has been around for such a long time and it holds a lot of memories for so many people. It's a game that has been with us through different stages of our lives and has a lot of replay value, so it's easy to go back to it and relive those memories. It's also a game that's very easy to pick up and play and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

I think what makes it so nostalgic is that when playing the game urself u feel alone in this huge world and with a calming quite sad background music that only strengthens the feeling of loneliness. As a 7 year old it was so calming to play and explore the world and just relax after a long day of school. It was something special that I had to myself. I didn’t need to focus on other people or problems in my real life. I just played with no care in the world. It was something that I really enjoyed and looked forward to playing every day after school. I hope this game never dies out

My oldest, who's 23 now, begged me to buy Minecraft. At that time he was playing a monthly subscribed game and I didn't want to pay another subscription so I said no. He just keep asking so I looked into it. Realized it was a one time purchase so relented. I watched him play it for the next week and was just drawn to it. The music was beautiful. The graphics were simple yet dynamic. At night, the terror was very real. I remember watching my son hiding in his house on the side of a hill and a creeper staring at him through a window. I felt worried for him. One night after he went to bed I grabbed my laptop and loaded the game up and haven't put it down since. I've had multiplayer worlds with each and everyone of my kids, all 5 of them. They vary based on the kid. The oldest and my world is by far the oldest and most developed, it's a sort of Disneyland for the rest of the kids. My oldest daughters is small and relaxing, we did a lot of fishing and farming. My middle daughter and I are real similar, we enjoy a balanced world, so it's a lot of technical farms surrounded in pretty builds. It's also a realm her friends join us on so it is quiet large. My youngest son is autistic so his world is an incredible collection of eclectic builds and massive roller coasters. One minute you are exploring a very detailed build of the polar express, the next you're riding a couple thousand block roller coaster that weaves around towering statues of the sponge Bob square pants crew. My youngest daughter just started playing and she is going to be a griefer. I don't even question it. Weaponized charged creepers incoming. The game has allowed me to make lasting connections with each of my kids in different ways. Thank you Notch. You made a beautiful game.

Yes. I cry when I hear it because it is so nostalgic because I was a minecraft fanatic back then, and I would play with my sister. I remember pretending to be Herobrine to scare here by chugging an invis and putting on chain mail. Minecraft was like being in a lucid dream back then. The graphics, the music, the sound. My 12 year old brain got attached to that simplicity. Life was simple, just like Minecraft. You wake up, go to school, come home and play Minecraft until bedtime. In Minecraft I would spawn in a new survival world and immediately start building a house out of wood blocks and prepare to go into a cave to find diamonds while avoiding the monsters at night. A very simple Minecraft adventure. Now I’m 21 and life isn’t so simple anymore.

I can't explain it right, but, everytime I listen to every Minecraft song, the nostalgia I feel, it's incredible, the feeling is just like I was really there inside the game, I can almost feel it, every single second played in this game felt like I was living another life, I don't have another game to compare that have the same emotional value, and what really made Minecraft is it's soundtrack, listening to these songs are such a mind dreaming feeling, it's not like every other song that you can feel the feeling that the song is supposed to give you, it's your feelings that are recorded in every note of these songs and everytime you listen to it, you feel it.

What makes the nostalgia even stronger is the fact when you look back you realise game was a huge part of what your life has become all those tutorials videos you watched and shared with your friends teaching your friends so you guys could play survival making buildings together letting your imagination guide you is the best and there's nothing stopping you from doing that mainly in minecraft because it has it all the music,the freedom,the fun you can make memories again. Yes it gets boring when your alone but it's fun with friends because it helps you bond have fun and make memories again visting your old world and looking back and feeling happy because this game let you make those memories and bonds. It's a true nostalgia and doing it again and again. it will never let minecraft die and I'll never stop playing it no matter how much long of a break I take 1 year 2 or even 3 I'll come back and play with my friends and it's been a part of my memories since I was 10 it helped me through a lot of stuff so I love minecraft.

You hop on skype, and call 3 of your best mates. One starts up his server, because he got help from his dad who knows much about pc’s and software. You do not do much; a bit mining, transferring of items, cleaning your chests and inventory... and whilst playing, you talk about all the fun things you guys are going to build in the summerbreak! (This came up in me because I recently started playing modded minecraft with my cousin and it brought me back when me, him, my sister and two other cousins were playing minecraft in that cousin’s computer room on macs and fairly used laptops.)

I was 24 when I first started playing Minecraft back in 2011, having learned about it from a colleague at my old job. Although I was already an adult at that time, my life has changed pretty siginificantly since then. Now, Minecraft feels pretty nostalgic to me, even in my mid thirties.
@lxxvx

I first played Minecraft back in Christmas of 2011, I was 26. My 12 year old nephew introduced it to me and I was hooked. I played almost nonstop from 2011-2013. I have very strong nostalgia for those years, usually thunderstorms, scented fall candles, and heavy snows make me nostalgic for it. After 2013, every year to sometimes two years since, I've had what I call a "playthrough" where I'll either host a server or join a small 5-10 person server with friends. We'll all agree on an allmods style modpack; my personal favorite is still the old Yogscast Complete Pack (which I think was a spinoff of Resonant Rise 2), but we play All the Mods 3 thru 8, Resonant Rise 3, FTB, etc. The "playthrough" usually lasts me a month or two of solid play until I shut it off for the next time. The funny thing is, I have nostalgia from every one of those playthroughs. Each time I establish a good footing and solid playthrough for Minecraft, when I get happy Minecraft memories I'll have new ones added. It's exponentially increasing the nostalgia as time progresses. Every time something triggers a Minecraft memory, if I haven't had a recent playthrough, the urge to play again skyrockets. I'm telling you.. they've cracked some kind of code. The perfect storm.

I wrote this poem a couple years ago, and I think it fits here. I was referencing the game's tenth anniversary, but it means all the same today. **ahem** Poppies are red, Wither Roses are black, For all of us wish, That we could go back. A time more simple, A time more grand. No lootboxes and crates, Just dirt, gravel, and sand. Back in 2012, Everything was so nice, And nowadays it is rare, To see a speedrun without a splice. Yet for all of the memories that we made, We have new ones every day, It takes a strong man to sink, Into the Swedish emotions that they always think. We can still play the game, When thinking about the past, But you must always remember to be grateful, Because every block you place may be your last.

I started playing when I was 3, not knowing most things, and still getting used to, well, life. I vividly remember the moment when we got the Xbox 360 for Christmas. It was part of a bundle that came with Minecraft. We booted it up, and played for 8 hours that day. A few weeks later, we found stampy and I watched him for years. From finding stampy, we even made our own world based on his. We would go in that world everyday. Even during mc’s downfall I still played. I wasn’t aware, I was like 6. But I never stopped. I made so many memories. Eventually I took a brake, and when Covid hit I started a bedrock Minecraft server with my friends. That lasted for about a year, until greifers took over and destroyed everything. I tried to make another server, but people never logged on. Now adays, I have trouble playing the game now, because of how nostalgic it makes me. I just wish I had one chance to go back to my young Pre K self, or the glory days of the server, and tell my old, young self, these will be the best, greatest days of your life.

I literally listen to Minecraft's soundtrack when I'm walking my dog. It brings back the memories and makes me feel like those 10 years ago when I was doing the same thing in Minecraft. Sometimes I want to play Minecraft, but after playing for some time I get thoughts that I need to work, I need to do productive stuff and not waste time on video games. It makes me feel like I will never feel the same way I felt back then.

I feel the same way man, it used to hit me hard few years back, the "stop playing these kid games you have way too much to do". But you can overcome that! Sometimes..they're not just games. Back in 2017, I asked my girlfriend if she had ever played Minecraft. She looked at me kinda funny and said "No, those graphics are so bad, isn't it for little kids??" I almost teared up with joy, I hadn't had this conversation with someone in YEARS. After convincing her to play (we did have to compromise for Bedrock edition, originally on our Xbox 360), she became so hooked so fast. Absolutely loved the game, the creativity, the openness. When she first spawned and started looking around her world, the very first thing she said was "What am I supposed to do?" I said "Literally, anything you want ❤". It was like watching my younger self experience it all over again. And only a few days later, I woke up one Sunday morning to the sound of Minecraft sheep baaing from the TV. I wake up and see her... still in her pajamas, cross legged in front of the TV with an empty cereal bowl next to her.. tending to her first little farm. God damn I'm tearing up now too 😂 It was such a pure moment, getting to introduce someone to the game, just as I had been, and begin incredible MC journey for the first time. Fast forward to today, we crossplay on PC and Xbox One, we host a Realm with our friends and have built a MASSIVE city over the last couple years. Huge skyscrapers, roads, restaurants, cultural districts, farmer's market, etc etc. And hell, literally last week we started a brand new survival world together, after she realized she still had never defeated the Ender Dragon, or the Wither. So now we're still making memories together, and I'm still so blessed to kinda relive those early memories I have, now with the woman I love 💘 God damn Minecraft is magical. Straight up. Don't ever stop playing, even if you take breaks sometimes!!

Gaming is a hobby like any other and for people of any age. Don't let others put you down for having fun. How old are you and no offense, but do you watch TV? Do you have hobbies you enjoy? If so, do you feel you're wasting time when you do those things? Do you feel unproductive. If not, then why feel bad and unproductive playing a video game? I don't know you ofcourse and have no idea what your life is like so maybe you can't, but just ask yourself. Assuming you take care of yourself and responsibilities are done, play a game. Make yourself happy. I'm 26 and work 40 to 60 hours a week. I have no kids and I take care of my house. When I'm free I play video games guilt free because I'm an adult and I do what I want as long as it's legal and not hurting others.
@THAMNOS
@THAMNOS 2 жыл бұрын
@@adbrooks95 I totally understand. I don't say that playing isn't fun for me from time to time. But Minecraft is a survival/sandbox game, and you need to pour hours and hours into it. I work as a freelance audio engineer/session vocalist/guitarist and I am also a musician - I always feel like I need to be working in one way or another because if I do not, I waste time. But I also love it. Music is my biggest passion and I am happy that I can do this for the living. However, sometimes it gets very exhausting too. And I would love to play some Minecraft or some other sandbox game (my favorite type), but the problem is with these games - it takes a long time to do anything in them. Before I start any project in Minecraft - I notice that a few hours went by, and I feel the need to work on the important stuff, because that's what I earn money from and that's what my future relays upon. The more progress I do now, the earlier I will achieve my goal (in a way), and playing Minecraft will only delay this. I am 24 by the way :)

I'm 40 now and never played Minecraft until my son started playing the game about a year and a half ago. I still get waves of nostalgia while playing and same with the music although I have only played a fraction of the time he has. The innocence is exactly what I think is so compelling. Seeing the game through the eyes of a 8 year old boy, having been one myself who was given an original NES on his birthday in the 90s. How I feel every time the Contra theme plays or the level end music of Mario 3 and translating that feeling to the experience he is having currently and will yet have when he is a dad in his 40's is why I imagine that is the case. Something about his little block character, that he made out of his own likeness, venturing off into the mist to explore and build out of his own imagination, eventually being "brave" enough to turn on survival mode, is very nostalgic and triggers some serious self reflection. Who knew a little block game could be so emotionally thought provoking and existential.

For me, there were 2 major spikes of nostalgia. One, the initial 2010-2016 popularity spike, and two, the 2020 COVID era spike. I remember going online with my friends on my minecraft server in 2020 when there was nothing else to do. I remember making a zoo on floating islands in a world forever lost to time. I rember going to minecon 2015. I remember the first time I played minecraft, I made a floating castle, ugly, yet nostalgic. Man, nostalgia really hits hard, right where it hurts. Every now and then, I’ll think about simpler times of fun and curiosity… And that bittersweet feeling strikes right then. ❤

I remember playing Minecraft on our PS3 in 2015-2017 (born in 2011), and i still wanna go back. We played all the time, often hearing the Moog City while playing. PvP, Elytra races (made by Mojang, not by mapmakers) are things i remember me and my 2 brothers (both older than me) playing on Minecraft PS3 edition. But now, we don’t anymore. One of my brothers is now oftenly playing on his PS4 and so is my other one. But just because i loved the older days doesn’t mean i don’t love the present days. I still play the game, with the new 1.20 coming up (very excited). So overall, i’m not too sad about how we lost the older days. Just happy that i remember them.

There was once a chess grandmaster who said: "If aliens exist they might play chess, but they certainly play Go." The point of the quote being that Go is such a natural and beautiful game that it its existence is inevitable with the development of intelligence. In a similar way, I believe Minecraft was inevitable with the development of computing. At least something Minecraft-like; the premise is just too simple and beautiful. However, that doesn't mean that the game has to be as good as it is. The particular visual style of Minecraft, the creatures that inhabit the world, the particular shapes of the landforms and caves, the music, that all came about by deliberate choices and they were all the right choices. So while Minecraft as a concept was inevitable Minecraft as a game was a beautiful creation of inspired individuals, and in my opinion is the best video game of all time, one which never may be surpassed at least in our lifetimes.

I started playing Minecraft Pocket Edition in the age of 14 since 2014 where I got my first android phone 2.3 jellybean version bought by my father as a birthday gift. I immediately buy and installed it to play Minecraft. I remember I played this version in 0.5.0 alpha with the update of Nether Reactor Core. It was so much fun farming it killin' all Zombie Pigman and collecting valuable loots. So many memories!

I started playing Minecraft when I was 18, which was 10 years ago. It was a time when I had moved out and was living on my own for the first time. It was a time of freedom, change, uncertainty, but also a lot of depression and anxiety. Minecraft was my safe place. A place where I could stay up all night, building villages and creating worlds where I could do whatever I want. Collaborating with my best friend online and making so many memories of the cities we built together. Even though I was already an adult when I first started playing, it still gives me an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. I still play to this day, although I have taken breaks over the years. The soundtrack is quite literally my favorite game soundtrack of all time (alongside BOTW), and hearing the track "Sweden" fills me with so much calm and happiness, to the point where I've played it while having a severe panic attack and it's stopped it in its tracks. I get this desire to jump back into the game and start creating again every time one of the songs plays. Minecraft will always be an important part of my life, and I can't wait for the day when I have children and can show it to them.

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Don't think it has much to do with your age but that feeling of carefree simplicity that you described. It is so simple yet filled with so much depth when you get into it. I still haven't discovered everything there is in the game regarding to mechanics and crafting like Redstone or the creative aspects like building. The first time i felt nostalgia, I was thinking of Minecraft. I remember the old feeling of glancing over to the left side of the screen, seeing my brother get the diamonds I have never before obtained. I think the most nostalgic part of it was the music. Whenever me and my family would play Minecraft, the music was always the elephant in the room. With most conversations starting with "why does this music remind me of a funeral". Minecraft without the music wouldn't be Minecraft. it would be nothing but a game that i used to play. but with the music and my 5 year old self. I really felt like i was in the game. As if the experience of Minecraft was a incomplete puzzle piece without the zen of the soundtrack that it brings.

6:56 I actually have a certain smell for minecraft, long story short, when I first started playing back in 2012, pocket edition was released, and when I first started to play I stayed in my aunt house and she had a certain type of candle (y'know, those with amazing smells?) she always picked the exact same type of candle, something called: "a walk in the park" or something similar, and that smell would stay in my mind as a part of minecraft, so whenever I got that smell It would launch me back in time when I was a little kid, playing this wonderful game, so in theory, you can have nostalgia from a Videogame trough smell, But I think that my case it's quite more especiffic.
@Dylan_Otto
@Dylan_Otto 2 жыл бұрын
I guess mine would be the musty smell of my dad's home office, with a slight smell of tobacco and old books, where me and my sister would take turns playing Minecraft alpha 1.32 deep into the night. Pretty sure this phenomenon is called cognitive association, where a stimulus is given during an activity repeatedly/continuously, making our brain associate both things as 1 single memory/entity. Another example would be a dog associating the sound for the word "walk" with an adventure with its owner, or like he said in the video, the smell of sunscreen with automatic thoughts swimming in the sea/pool

i doubt that anyone will see this, since this video is so old Minecraft isn't just a block game It's our childhood We learned how to make friends A game full of creativity Every block we place doesnt matter Houses we made, Buildings we made. Pets we bred Mobs we slayed Our childhood game might have it's last update, Doesn't mean we can't play it anymore Give me all the hate you want But minecraft will be the best game in the world Remember the old times you placed your first block The first dog you tamed The first house you made The first coal ore you found And finding diamonds Soon, you will unexpectidly place your last block.... Sad isn't it? 10 years anniversary of our game Minecraft A new decade has past New updates been released Yes , all of that was in a Block game.... Minecraft, isn't just a block game. Isn’t it funny how day a day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different? Back when "last online 6 years ago" was "last online 6 minuets ago" The worst feeling isn't loneliness, it's being forgotten by someone you will always remember. When the person who gave you the best memories becomes a memory. You cant stop growing up. But you can always be a child at heart. So go out there and do it. Make new friends. Go on your own adventure. Minecraft will never truely die, it will live in our hearts forever.

I remember my earliest long-term world. It was 2014 and I had just got an Xbox 360 E with Minecraft. It was a Christmas gift from my Dad, who had driven 1500 miles to give it to me himself. The first time I ever booted it up, I distinctly remember Sweden playing. Created a Creative World, spawned in a village. I immediately went to the shore and built a house entirely out of Gold Blocks. Put some windows in and built multiple rooms. Turned a library into a Bakery and pretended to sell bread and cakes. Over on a desert area, I built an airbase and then built my best attempt at a Vought F4U Corsair (I was a kid who was obsessed with everything WW2). It seemed like a massive distance, but given worlds at this point on 360 were still 256x256, it really wasn't. I built a really basic railway over. I would like to note however this wasn't my first time playing Minecraft. My first ever was in 2012. It was on my Grandparents' computer, and I played on a Superflat World. Built a castle entirely out of Netherrack. It truly was a different time. It's been 12 years, and I've been playing constantly for 10 of that. Minecraft legitimately has been a founding thing in my life. I'm hoping that I'll still be playing Minecraft years in the future.

Just thinking about memories of me playing multiplayer on my cousin's nintendo switch in the summer, made me cry while watching this video. I gotta admit: I was one lucky unlucky kid. I used to play minecraft all the time in summer between second grade and third grade. I was introduced to minecraft in IT lesson when my teacher let us build a house in minecraft, and I got into it in summer. It was really fun, and nostalgic. I did so every summer until fourth grade, I just came to my cousin's house every Friday in the summer, play some Minecraft, had a sleepover... It just made me cry that now in 6th grade, all of my friends competetive games like roblox bedwars or arsenal now... I want to play minecraft again... like the good old days. And being an asian, my parents won't let me buy Minecraft. But seriously, that almost 3 years of playing Minecraft, made a huge part of my life now. I just want to play minecraft as soon as possible, feeling the nostalgia as I entered a survival world after so long... I still watch Minecraft SMP videos to these days, but they just feel, not emotional at all now, even minecraft let's play... I want to experience it again... forever. I want to be my cousin so much, he got to enjoy minecraft for the fullest, while I... am stuck to no entertainment besides youtube and a bad memory mobile phone, that doesn't have money. I... just want to play minecraft, that's it.
