I am amazed at how many people refer to the Proximal Nail Fold as the cuticle. Even Dr Dray, whose videos I love and follow her advice, recently posted a video promoting Vaseline for dry "cuticles". Even dermatologists do not name this correctly!

I have this happen with my nails using Dazzle Dry, I’ve found this happens when I don’t get the top coat over the color polish far enough over on the sides of my nails. Without the top coat the polish lifts. 😅
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Жыл бұрын
Lifting is a sign of improper bond. The polish will not lift like this just because the top coat doesn't cover the color. Then the polish will crack there but base coat and polish will not lift like this...
@christinethorstensen1535
@christinethorstensen1535 Жыл бұрын
I never have lifting at the cuticle, only on the sides. My nails are very clean with Dazzle Dry 1st step and smooth with a tiny amount of buffing (not in that order). I’m thinking (after listening to you) it might be that I’m not applying the base coat close enough to the sides of my nail! Not the top coat. I’ve also noticed the new bottles of base coat are quite different than the older version!!! Very thin and doesn’t want to bond over any peeling or extremely dry nails that have some flaking that can’t be buffed off without removing to much nail. Love watching your videos….you are a wealth of information. Thank you💙

Hi Anna, what a great video. I also had peeling from the nail polish at the bottom of the nail when i was younger. Then i figured out that there was a cuticle left on my nails. I want to do my nails with gelpolish before going on vacation at the salon. But when i wan’t to remove the gelpolish should i go to the salon to remove it?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley-Ann, Yes to salon removal but if they remove incorrectly which most salons do it will take you 6 months to regrow the damage. Not worth it in my opinion. I would rather polish my nails with regular polish.

I am meticulous about removing cuticle and do understand the difference btwn the PNF and the cuticle and yet my polish sometimes lifts in the same manner as the photos shared in this video. My nails are dry, I don’t soak, I spray off the remover, I use the DD prep and I’m not touching the sides of my nails. For the life of me, I am not sure what I’m doing wrong …
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Жыл бұрын
Are you covering the whole nail with the base? Without touching the skin? Usually that’s why the polish would lift like this. Not the lack of top coat. When the top coat does not cover the whole polish the polish will crack in that area. Not lift. Is your base coat warmed up? That is one thing I forgot to mention!!
@beauty_enthusiast
@beauty_enthusiast Жыл бұрын
@@TheSalonLife well I’m not a manicurist but I feel like I am painting the base on the entirety of the mail w/o touching the skin. I follow the DD instructions to the letter.

@@TheSalonLife Unfortunately I'm no help, since I don't know either, sorry :) . There was just so much good information in this video (as always). Maybe someone else has an idea. Excellent video. This is gonna sound weird but here goes. What does it mean if you never see cuticle?? Maybe because I’ve always pushed back the skin everyday I’m pushing it back too? I have never ever seen what you show in the images. I’m confused. My nails are damaged because I filed the ridges (before I met you, annnnd pulled off a dip and a gel polish (before I met you). Now I have both sets which I’m not going to use anymore even though I’ve only used them both a couple times. 😮 Now it’s time to hopefully not waste more money on Dazzle Dry. Been doing the warm oil soaks and applying oil after hand washing. Thank you!

Kelli I too do not have cuticle and have wondered why. I regularly push back the living skin and use oil regularly. I have cuticle on my toe nails but not finger nails?
@vanitygirl6989
@vanitygirl6989 Жыл бұрын
@@dianneporter542 I guess it just the way it is with some people. I also don’t have much (if any) cuticle to remove when i’m giving myself a manicure every week. People are different. Some people also have a lot of calc/tartar in two weeks and need a dental cleaning every two weeks (even if they brush really well every day) and others (like myself NEVER have any calcules to remove). I’m a dental hygienist so therefore the comparison. If I’m wrong, Anna is welcome to correct me :)
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Жыл бұрын
@vanitygirl, you are correct. Maybe some people have a less sticky cuticle? Maybe the skin sheds differently? Probably like plaque. Some people have more and some less. Not the same thing because we don’t need plaque but you know what I mean…

This makes me think of an issue I'm now having with Shellac. Not sure if it's the top coat. It keeps getting thick near the nail fold... no matter using a orange stick, a brush with alcohol on it; a couple of days after application when the nail starts to grow, it has like a "thicker" edge from being near the nail fold. Have you been noticing this? I've been applying Shellac for 8 years and never had this issue until recently and not sure how to fix it.
@TheSalonLife

No idea. Unless I can see exactly what you are doing I can't advise. You are using CND Shellac? Which top coat? Is the top coat old and thick?
