It's a shame they didn't put this engine in the 1st gen Monte carlo as I think the monti carlo looks more sporty with the black trim. As for the diesel vrs, was a great little car, I got to test drive one and was really impressed, makes me wonder if Skoda got to hear about the impending doom on diesel engine cars, hence the very low price you can pick a series 1 fabia cars up for.

My mum has the mk 1 fabia vrs will last forever (133k miles and going strong always starts whether is -5 or 35 ) and get twice the mpg maybe not as much hp but can easily make more. And the pint about the oil with the mk 1s most of the tdi engines do but most of the time there thrashed about and that's probably why I check the oil regularly and hardly ever have to top up

I wonder how many people who have commented on one of these have actually owned one. Unfortunately they do have problems with oil consumption and the gearbox, no one can deny that. I had one for several years and it had real personality. It was quick, could be quite economical (it was released in 2010 so obviously more modern cars would have better economy). However, it is a great mix of power and economy and if you get a good one, it is a great car, and I loved mine.

I would have buyed one to replace my Mk2 Diesel Fabia, but apparrently they have a lot of issues with the engine (even on the revised version), it is apparently a matter of luck, either it will have absolutely no issues, or it will have a lot of issues. Just sold my Mk2 Vrs. Had it 5 years it had 93k on the clock. Only issue I had in those 5 years was a wire on one of the air flow sensors snapped (at the back of the engine bay) which was a bastard to diagnose. I also went through A LOT of oil as it was an earlier engine. It was a decent family car tbh. Handling wasn't great and the whole experience was a bit vanilla. I bought a Fiesta ST3 and they're like chalk and cheese. The ST is a great car. So much fun and more chuckability. The only thing I dont like about it is the boy racer image but I can live with that as its just so good.

You nailed exactly why its not as popular as previous gen because even tho its got a the pocket rocket engine and box tunability is poor and its too big soft and floppy not what the old vrs was we understand because of laws they cant do the turbo diesel but that was small light tight and nippy in comparison !!!

The answer is that it is the “Cake” Fabia. This is the mark 2 version that was marketed with an advertising campaign that how sweet, literally, and how cute it was. This is fine but you cannot then try to market your car as a performance vehicle. The mark three version is more angular, looks good, and yet it has no VRS variant. It’s a major screw up for Skoda as if you had a model like that it would look as good as it does but was level with a Golf GTI or an Audi. A1, it’s an amazing product. A thinking man’s alternative.

1.9 was made when diesel was the saviour of the internal combustion engine. Post 2009 realisation came that diesels are just as bad as petrols. So 1.4 happened.

Why didn’t they drop the 2.0 diesel lump in it ? Doesn’t make sense considering all the issues. Octavia RS has it so what was the problem ? The Mk 1 Fabia vRS was an amazing car but they crippled it after the 53 reg cars with a stupid close ratio gearbox which nobbled the top speed.
