I completely agree with what you said about product ads. Honesty and integrity are very important to me. I feel that more people (celebrities included) should share and be proud that they get to advertise when and if they like a product. But many of them (that get paid fairly) have a privilege that most people don’t have. There shouldn’t be a sneaky “catch” to it. I truly appreciate when influencers disclose that they have partnered with a brand, have a sponsorship with a brand, or have created an ad with a brand. I also like to see the person re-use stuff they say “they like” to show they actually enjoy it.

I can't speak for Vogue videos that run on youtube, but in television and film, product placement has been happening for decades. Traditionally in television and film it's not about selling a product. For instance, let's say you're watching a medical show (before your time - but Chicago Hope or St. Elsewhere or ER), you may not notice that many "Doctors" are wearing Nike. That's product placement - wherein the props or costume department (or the production company) have an agreement with Nike who provide product in return for exposure. But it's not a commercial or an Ad. Back in the day (again, before your time) one of the larger product placement deals included commercials (one of the Back to the Future films) where not only did the character drink Pepsi in the film (a common placement) but the footage from the film was in the commercial. In some cases, the company being "placed" actually pays the production company a fee to be in the film/television program. The FTC appears to have limited jurisdiction, ie, they can make suggestions, but they don't seem to have the ability to enforce over these bodies. Another very well-know franchise that deeply participates in production placement is the Bond series. Cars, watches, clothing, alcohol, etc.

Yesss so much good info thank you!! 🎉🎉 it would be so fascinating to see the behind the scenes and where the money trail ends with it all 😅
@TheHoodedLid
@TheHoodedLid Жыл бұрын
@@allanaramaa In the case of productions - either no money, placement is exposure or a company pays the production company for placement which will either off-set production or marketing costs (a mere drop in the bucket as these costs are very high), sometimes the company is obligated to produce and buy air time for national spots (pricey) as part or all of payment for being placed in a film. This is only for films known to have potential to be big hits, or installments of proven hits (Bonds, Marvels, Harry Potters, etc). The take away is these truly are situations where both parties bring value and come away with what the want. It's mutually beneficial.

Allana! We have the same eye shape, I’ll tell you how to curl your lashes lol look dead center into the mirror and put the curler like you’re going to curl your lashes, but then turn your face to the side, like giving yourself a side eye and then curl, it’ll lift the lashes at the very corner of your eye and the middle, but not the ones in the inner 1/3 which is perfect for this eye shape. It’ll give you a total lift! It’s not the same as just curling the edge of your eye lol pls trust me and try it, game changer

I’ve been with you for 7 years. Not quite the whole time. I still watch every vid! You see the same product placement in shows all the time- for example even though the women on Selling Sunset don’t get a clothing budget at all, they’re clearly given loads. Every time you see a bag, it’s clearly displayed on a desk/table with the logo facing the viewer. Without fail. It’s so blatant.

If you don't like those lashcurlers you need to try those "half curlers". No idea what they're actually called, but they're half the size and you only curl sections of your lashes at the time. Works great for me. I couldn't use those large ones as they just don't fit my eyes.

I totally agree about the surreptitious advertising creep. I noticed it in the Barbie movie - so much product placement! But I couldn't see any acknowledgment of it (certainly not something that was obvious). I personally feel quite affronted at the indirect approach - I always appreciate that it's clear when influencers are being paid to share products - because I can then see how frequently that product shows up again in a non-sponsored context to see if it's a genuine love, or if it's just a sponsorship. I also don't really begrudge people doing a sponsorship for a product they don't adore, but think is just okay! Because it's clearly communicated as sponsored content, I know to take it with a grain of salt, in the context of their content overall, and form a perspective on the product from that. And I support you getting paid for the work you do!! So clearly demarcated content - I think it's great. I find I'm much less trusting when I see something that's not clear, like the what's in my bags. Such a funny world. Congrats on 10 years Lan! I can't remember when I started watching, but it was at least 5 years ago! Back in the days of your apartment and the bob! You're my favourite content creator. Keep up the fabulous you-ness!

Hi Lan! Late in commenting here, but found your comments on sponsorships and disclosure really interesting. I work on the brand side and manage partnerships with influencers/celebs across social media and press (both paid and earned). In short, I'd say that I agree with you that the rules are not uniformly clear. Me and my team spend A LOT of time making sure we are playing by the most recent rules and in compliance with all disclosure requirements on social, but in press it is a different story. The same celeb can promote on social with all the necessary call-outs and then mention one of our products in their "favorites" round-up in press and sometimes their relationship as an ambassador for our brand is mentioned, and sometime it isn't. And, frankly, as the brand we don't always have knowledge of if/how the brand relationship will be shared in press (it is often at the editor's discretion or the specific outlet's policy). So, in conclusion to my essay here ;) from my perspective I also find this confusing, even though it is part of my job, too!

Totally agree w the celebrity thing bc they infer they use the products. For movies, everything is a commercial decision so I don’t think disclosure is needed there the same way. Some movies are sponsored by the US Dept of Defense which is a fun thing to look up. Marvel movies and such usually always have a different car brand they feature (but the Creature Comforts beer in Endgame wasn’t sponsored- just a beer they liked while filming in Atlanta).

10 years! Wow, that is so exciting. 🎉 That’s crazy you were only 20 when you started this channel. I don’t remember what year I started watching except that you were living in Calgary going to university. It truly has been such a joy to watch you grow into yourself as an individual, but also into your career on KZfaq. I think what I love most about you is that you have also always stayed true to yourself and your character. You remain grateful and sincere and genuine and I think that has so much to do with your success. I think quite often I’m watching simply because you’re a delight, not even so much about the make up or the subject of the video. That being said, I also do enjoy your content a lot. Without a doubt, I have been influenced! I’ve purchased many many things that you recommend, not just make up but clothing and also have used some of your recipes. I love that you have so many different things that you talk about and how varied it is. You’ve really grown into such a beautiful woman inside and out. I’m really excited for you for this next chapter of becoming a wife. How cool is that to say! ❤ congratulations to you on 10 years! Thank you for talking about advertising and how it’s different rules for different industries. That is odd. I hadn’t really thought of it before but you’re so right. I do notice it when I’m watching television and movies like you mentioned. I’m always aware that I am actually the commodity. I think I have the most respect for the influencers who are very open about the ads and to be honest for those people, I am generally sincerely happy for them that they have the sponsorship. Watching you on KZfaq is free content so if me watching an ad contributes to your pay that seems only fair but also ethical. I noticed on Karissa Pukas Instagram today somebody complained about her having so many sponsorships. I’ve never understood complaining about it. It’s free for us to watch and absolutely no skin off my back nor does it impact my trust in you as an influencer. Also, I have benefited from some of those sponsorships because I actually do discover new products that I still use today. I just think good for you, you deserve to get paid. But one thing that makes you unique as an influencer space is that you truly are so incredibly grateful to experience these wonderful trips and opportunities and as someone who has followed you for so long it makes me so happy for you to have these experiences. You work hard, and it’s not a job that I would want. I don’t think it’s a job that most of us would want. So to complain about it seems petty. So, considering the differences of how ads are required to be revealed amongst industries, I’m curious how that makes you feel? Do you wish you didn’t have all the rules that you do or do you think that’s how the other industries should also be operating? The show I think that is so blatantly advertising is the whole bachelor franchise. It’s insane how much product placement is in that show. I find that annoying when it’s that excessive. Feels gross because that show is getting rich off the backs of every day humans and then still do all this product placement. Money hey. It’s what makes the world go round.

Oh I wish I’d watched this sooner. I could not agree more on the disclaiming thing. It’s the same in the influencer space - SO many people don’t think disclaiming applies to them and it drives me insane. Like some people have never disclaimed in their entire career and yet they get away with it because somehow they don’t have any trolls who will ever bother to tell on them. It drives me mad. And then I work on the same project and write ad on anything that needs it and it’s like why should you get away with not disclaiming?!? There should not be one thing for some and one thing for another. Okay rant over 😂😂 one of those things that sees me eye rolling on the daily :) xx

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your 10 year anniversary on YT 🥳🥂🍾! I often think/ see of product placement in movies and music videos mainly because they often stick out like a sore thumb😂! I actually never thought about it when it comes to the kind of videos you mentioned, unless there’s multiple products of the same brand. From what I understand it’s a jungle of regulations you have to follow as a content creator! Of course I think that the rules should apply to everyone regardless of the product. I think that the beauty space is especially “attacked” is first of all bc of a few bad apples that time and time again refuses to follow the rules, and bc the vast majority of consumers, often younger people, doesn’t factor in that what you see on camera is not always how it looks in real life. People are using their hard earned money on products the influencer “swears” is absolutely amazing and life changing (?), and often they get disappointed. I’m not saying that they are lied to, but I believe that maybe not all are disclosed.. e.g. how did the influencer prep before putting on the foundation, skin type etc. I just feel that either you trust the person reviewing it or you don’t. (I trust you) I’m wishing you a great weekend! 💕

Happiest 10 years ever ❤ about the disclosure in videos. Apparently, even if the creator lives in another country but their content is available to the US, they then have to follow the US regulations. Jen Luvs did a whole video about it , and Tea Spill touched on it. But yeah, how is it so many get away with not disclosing ads? I appreciate you and your honesty.

I think the difference is an influencer’s job is to actually influence & get people to buy things. It’s like a commercial. There are different rules to follow when filming & publishing a commercial as oppose to a tv show or music video. U can have several sponsorships for that said video or show, hence ad disclosure can be a bit more hidden. When I was in college, in the early 2000’s, the influencer space wasn’t really thing, so I don’t know exactly what the rules & regulations are. However, I believe they’re similar to those of a commercial like I stated above. Also to note, a celebrity has influence because of their work that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with followers on social media, like modeling or acting or singing, or even a famous last name, etc. Where an influencer has influence because of their follower count. One can exist with or without social media & the other cannot. Yes, social media helps these celebrities but it isn’t as paramount to their success. I think that’s also why they’re treated differently & play by a different set of rules. Just my observation☺️

Hi from France ! I love your channel so much 💗! I love your content but also your soooo funny personality 🤪! You always make me laugh 😂! For movies, there is actually very often "sponsorship" because producers, directors always need more money. Everybody knows that make a movie is constantly more expensive. The brand that I see the most is Apple. If you see a laptop in a movie, it's always an Apple... I think that it's obvious in all the James Bond's movies : cars, watches, etc. Congratulations on your 10 years ! I wish you 10 more years and many more ! Sorry for my english 😅.

Vogue is a magazine and those are full of advertisement so the videos are too. It's a company not an influencer who appears like normal friendly people who just talk about their favorite lipsticks. There is a big difference.

Congrats on your 10 year anniversary! To your discussion re influencer regs…I’m glad you disclose, it means a lot and positions you as a trusted resource! In the food/dining space, so-called food influencers are so obviously sponsored/paid/gifted and don’t disclose (although they’re supposed to). It’s SO ANNOYING. And yes, #AD is silly and gets buried. I think the UK, while strict in their regs, has it right. Just adding my two cents. Thanks for your great content. Lorin

Happy 10 years!!! Cheers to more fabulousness. I love your videos and your honesty and I'm glad you brought up the sponsorship situation. The sponsorship thing irritates me only when they don't disclose. My husband showed me a video by Casey LaDelle, he actually talks in depth about how it all works including the placement of popular products in the videos. So the way he did his video was eye opening, I had no idea. He did his intro, then after his intro he pointed out all the name brand products that were in his intro and specifically placed ahead of time so they were seen by the viewer and the affiliate company. He didn't have to say a thing, just place the products in view and boom he gets paid. He covered a lot, so now I look at videos in a completely different way. Kind of bums me out that there are so many tricks and shady deals happening. But I do know there are a lot of great content creators doing the right thing. You are included in that honest group so thank you!

Happy 10 year anniversary 🎉 I also pondered about the fact that most celebrity/luxe brands ad placements are always hidden. They don’t disclose it. It’s so weird. Speaking from an audience pov, I feel like I would trust you MORE with any sponsorship, than any other celebrity. Simply because you showcase your personality through the “ad” and within your videos. Whereas celebrities are getting more and more filtered, distant by the day, so you can sense the “performance “ in those specific ads, in my opinion. But again, its only for certain celebrities, just like I wouldn’t trust every other influencer. I think the audience is becoming smarter and less gullible these days, so that will also change the way we do things now.

I learned about product placement in my management or marketing college classes and I cannot unsee it. Marvel movies and action movies are NOTORIOUS for this. The villian crashes into a semi and its a pepsi truck and the camera lingers for a split second too long on the pepsi truck. Or they are showing something on a phone or computer and the shot is too wide so they can get the logos in the scene. It drives me CRAZY because I can't pull my focus away from the product placement. I think it was transformers? that had something like 25 different sponsors throughout it is WILD

I think at this point we all assume that any direct, positive brand acknowledgment in a magazine/tv show/movie is paid placement. Like, there is no other reason for it to be there. That's why tv shows and movies create fake brands for the most part (i.e. "a pear computer"). The issue with influencers is that they're constantly mentioning tons of different brands and products as part of their daily work. People have difficulty differentiating what is paid placement and what is something discovered firsthand. ~15 years ago, it was a huge issue when influencers weren't required to disclose advertisements because they would slip an ad into a video as if it were an organic recommendation. You are obviously have integrity and are transparent with ads, but I do think the rules are necessary overall (mainly for those who aren't as open with followers). Too many people think of influencers as "a girlfriend chatting about makeup and clothes" and it's important to flag when someone is being compensated for a positive review.
