I live in California and have been insured by Lemonade for 3years. I pay about $5 a month for a basic policy..... only thing I have an issue with is the coverages for Earthquake damages is not included. Lemonade is partnered with a company who offers those coverages and the cost goes up quite a bit. Been thinking about adding renters insurance to my auto and stumbled upon this video. Great info. Thanks !

Any coverage is better than no coverage. However, after filing 2 personal claims (both currently open for almost 9 months and have been unnecessary delayed due to limited staff. Low price and and the ability to easily obtain coverage should not be confused with having good coverage. At the end of the day you obtain coverage for peace of mind. There are so many terrible stories with lemonade. I’m an attorney and one of the types of matters I handle is renter’s insurance claim, the firm has almost always had terrible experiences with Lemonade (especially with bigger claims).

@@ThinkInsurance Would you mind clarifying some thing for me, if you don’t mind? I am a disabled person that is renting an apartment in California. The apartment management company forced us to get renters insurance, so I did so through AAA. Not even a full two weeks later, a disaster struck in my apartment! It is Wednesday night right now, and just this last Monday I was woken up in the morning with water dripping on my face from the upstair’s apartment. An old cheap water pipe that was located in that apartment was so decayed that a hole developed in it and it led to a massive water leak that ended up going through his floors, the ceiling, and into my place, causing a MASSIVE disaster zone in my apartment. The worst bit is the fact that the ceiling is the popcorn ceiling kind that has asbestos in it because our complex was built in either the late 60s or very early 70s, and the maintenance guy drilled like a good 20 holes in my ceiling to get all the water out and ventilate it with the dehumidifier machines as much as possible to try to prevent mold. The apartment management told me that I have to use _MY_ renter’s insurance to cover this crap, and would only give me $50 a day in “rent credit“ during the time that they are fixing it. AAA said that my deductible alone is $1500, _AND_ my premium will go up. As I said before, I am disabled, so I don’t have the money to afford this at all because I live on Social Security income alone. The $50/day rent credit is so beyond ludicrous… It costs $110 a night at the cheapest motel near me (Motel 6) as it is (I have been staying at one since Monday night because I don’t have anywhere else to go), not to mention all of the electricity costs that will be coming from running these massive dehumidifier machines in my place, as well as who knows how much of my property has been destroyed in this… I already know that some of my irreplaceable artwork has been destroyed, etc. Shouldn’t it be _THEIR_ insurance that covers all of this, including covering a motel for me to stay in?? If they can’t blame any of this on me at all, then shouldn’t it be considered illegal to force me to use my own insurance policy to pay for all of this? And they also tried to say that my place is livable right now because I have a one bedroom apartment and they said I could stay on my couch in my living room, which is a complete joke. Not only is it nearly 90° in my place because of all the equipment running and I can’t open my windows because of it, but my couch is like 20 years old with all the upholstery worn off of it so it feels like cloth and metal at this point… I never use it anymore. I need an actual bed to be in, because my disability is for a disastrous back surgery that put me out of work and made me bedridden most of my days and nights with 24/7 chronic pain. They offered to move my bed into the living room, but my bed is MASSIVE and huge, and won’t fit in the living room and I’m scared they would destroy it just in taking it apart… Not to mention the fact that it is still unfit to stay in my place with equipment and wires to trip over everywhere, the temperature, the loudness of the equipment, and the asbestos ceiling dust and particles that is literally everywhere in my bedroom and hallway with the equipment fans blowing it around everywhere. Sorry that ended up being so long… But can you tell me if you have an idea what they should be legally responsible for financially in such a situation as mine? I thought I heard you say that they won’t pay for us to live elsewhere, but there’s nowhere else for me to live… I don’t have family to live with, and I haven’t had a social life in eons because of my disability, so I don’t have friends to stay with either… I have to stay in a hotel/motel. And the estimates of how long is going to take also seem shady… They originally said 4-5 days to fix it, and then said 5-7 days, and then a different tenant I am friends with told me that the same thing happened with them and it ended up taking THREE weeks to fix it! That would be a lot of money in a motel 6! I don’t have the money for this and I am currently charging my credit card right now but won’t be able to afford the minimum payments for it when it is time to pay. How much do you think they should be responsible for when none of this is my fault? Sorry for any typos… I am so exhausted from all of this and just don’t feel like proofreading at the moment.

AAA renters insurance is Dog waste. Was paying $23 a month for 100k and my card got declined (Which it shouldnt have) I tried to resolve the issue 90 days later (Unknowing my policy was canceled) and they refused to just charge me what I would have paid $70 to get back on an identical policy. They wanted 100% down ($200). DO NOT GO WITH AAA- arrogant combative big brother attitude type company.

If you live in Massachusetts it's illegal for a landlord to require Liability Insurance. In Massachusetts the law is specific. They only thing you can charge a tenant at lease up is Deposit, 1st month rent, last month rent and a key fee. So....no pet fee's, no parking fee's, no reserved parking fees, no fancy parcel pending package system fees to get mail.....So make sure what the law is in the state you live in. I called my Attorney Generals office in Boston and they have a nice booklet they send out upon request called Guide to Landlord/Tenant Rights.

Thanks dude. Here's some irony - I like how "progressive" Lemonade insurance is. They are straightforward, not so corporate, simple to navigate, and will soon have auto. On the other hand, they don't seem as comprehensive as USAA - which is more expensive but impressive. Regardless, I think I'll try lemonade for it's affordability. God forbid anything happens, but if it does, do you believe they're easy to deal with and get compensation from? Thanks again

My A/C went out and my water got shut off due to a water main bust down my street. AAA refused to cover any costs for me to be temporarily rehoused while everything was being repaired. Due to my residence being deemed unliveable during the time frame of the repairs. The adjuster actually threatened me with prosecution for filing false claims... Don't buy in with AAA.

What about all the cigarette & pot smoke coming from my neighbors below? It says in our lease agreement that people are to smoke on patio not inside. Yet the manager acknowledge she smelt smoke in my apartment. The smoke (all kinds) is making me sick. The place is becoming unlivable as I'm coughing now all the time..I have an appt w my dr. I also gave the manager a note from my Dr saying that I cannot be exposed to smoke.
@ThinkInsurance
@ThinkInsurance 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t see where insurance would cover that. You can call them to ask but insurance only covers sudden and incidental. The smoke is over time like mold would be. Now, if the manager can’t take the steps to insure your safety/health that might be something they or their insurance would be liable for. It might involve you calling a lawyer, but I can’t honestly say what I would do. I would probably let the manager know that if they tenant below doesn’t stop, you’ll have to hold them responsible. That being said, it’s not worth staying if your health is at risk. You may have to make the choice for your health over your apartment. 😞

Hi, I'm a new subbie & glad my quick search led to your video because I was initially leaning towards Lemonade for renters and was just about to pay it for the yr when I inquired about coverage for warranted appliances of course the bot wasn't helpful and the human was useless since they don't know unless a claim is file and would likely refer that I go through the manufacturer so that was my first issue the second was who covered in the household and thus far I like that All-State gives you enough money to replace appliances for brand new ones instead of cost value which is only enough for used. This was my other issue so if you are available to speak directly via email or by phone that would be great b/c renter's insurance is new to me. Thanks so much!

@@ThinkInsurance Hi, thanks for the info also. I'm in a big high rise in a big city. The building is about 20 years old , mainly expensive but with a potion stabilized. I'm in one of the stabilized apartments and for many years have had no renters insurance. But now in the lease there is a new document seemingly not distinguishing between people who pay full and people who are stabilized. This document begins with saying they want proof provided of $100k insurance prior to move in. However I've been here for years. Then at the end where they want an acknowledgement signature to the effect that your insurance must meet their minimum requirements or it may not cover everything. In the original booklet that came on moving in is said renters insurance "strongly recommended" . But now there's this page in the lease worded such that it assumes I have insurance. So now do I have to get $100K coverage insurance so the landlord will sign the new renewal lease? I signed all the usual documents and asked in an email if they could reword that document so that it says it's optional but they said no, claiming it was standard now for all tenants. My property here is worth maybe under 8K and their deadline for the lease renewal completion is later in the month. If I don't sign that can I be evicted? What do you recommend? thanks
