Why is Rishi Sunak 'so keen' on National Service? James O'Brien reacts | LBC

Sunak suggests it'd be 'politicising armed forces' to respond to criticism of national service policy.
Asked about comments from Lord West of Spithead, a former chief of the naval staff and Labour peer, who is reported to have called the policy "bonkers", Mr Sunak said: "Well it wouldn't be appropriate to start politicising the armed forces during an election campaign."
The Prime Minister insisted the military route was optional, despite the proposed national service scheme being compulsory.
When asked about what sanctions people could face for not taking part, Mr Sunak pointed to "access to finance" among other examples.
Asked if this meant taking away people's bank cards, he laughed, and said: "There's lot of different models around Europe."
James O'Brien provides his analysis of last night's debate.

I find it frightening that some people are still prepared to vote for these people. They seem to be trying to re-introduce slavery by stealth tactics. They have spent the last 14 years driving down living standards for at least 90% of the population. Yet it seems there are some who still believe they are the best people to run the country.

There is a disturbing trend that many people think politicians who either come from money or have money somehow are better suited to run a country. Truthfully it’s the opposite and that’s why idiots like Sunak will only destroy things further. He is married to the heir of a billion dollar company and can probably count the number of times he’s been told “no” on one hand, of course he is going to get angry when regular people disagree with his positions because he thinks he is above them.

Simple this country has gone back to Victorian times, when the masses knew their place and only the people with wealth could afford to send their children to university. Now students from working class families have to decide if it is worth it as they will end up thousands in debt. Then again maybe it's the institutions way to ensure only fee paying students get places and that includes the thousands of overseas students who contribute millions to their coffers. Could be wrong but as the saying goes money talks.

Punishing the younger generations for daring to say that they, rightfully, deserve better than that what they have been given and demanding the people who have been in charge of the country as most of them have grown up be held to account. The implication I got from that was that there would be a pay-off option, so rich kids could just get their parents to bribe their way out of this scheme, while poor kids wouldn't have that option or would be sold a load of debt. It's an attempt to appeal to people who hate young (and poor) people, but without upsetting the parents of little the little heirs for whom 'service' is far below them.

@alexatkin Absolutely. So many young people have to work to support themselves because the Tories took away appropriate funding to allow them to study. I have been looking at masters degrees recently and many of them cost more than the funding available so, for example, one course at Edinburgh University you would have to find £6k more than the funding available to pay just the course fees. When I challenged them on this they said that it was priced towards foreign students not UK students and that foreign students got priority as they pay additional fees on top of their course fees. Anyway, back to the subject...so many students will be studying full time, working full time and now are being forced to do forced volunteering on top. Basically the Tories just want forced labour. Imagine threatening things like access to a driving licence

So what would I have to do, tell my landlord that I can't make rent as I had to do volenteer work, Do I have to make up the hours? If I was in college, and I needed a weekend job to pay tutition? Do young people with kids get free childcare to cover them while they're forced to serve? This is before the stupidity of having one in three people in the military being on a year's conscription. How much effort is going to go on just babysitting, equipping, and trying to find a use for 30,000 extra bodies. It's not like it's going to be worth giving them detailed training. You train a tank commander so you've got a useful soldier for years to come, not who''ll be out a couple of months after he gets the basics down. So the only thing they'll be used for is grunt work, peeling spuds and cleaning up after service personel who've committed to the military as a career.

He's just doing the modern conservative thing of punishing the people who don't vote for him. It's been a big trend in recent years with this kind of politics, where the focus isn't on looking to improve your standing and enticing people to vote for you, but actively punishing and gaslighting the people who don't. It's like with Br'exit - their priority was seemingly not to secure a better deal or retain perks of membership, but rather scrap all the things that Remain voters liked about Europe. Young people don't tend to vote conservatively, because a lot of the policies passed by this government disproportionately affect them negatively, thus Sunak is bringing in policies that punish them.

@@happyspaceinvader508 Not that I support this, but it is worth a read. No one will be forced into the armed service, and the time spent doing it isn’t as long as you think. You could do community based voluntary service, and not go into the armed service etc. It would also be a great way for all unskilled immigrants to change the narrative that they don’t want to integrate or haven't paid into the country etc. They could show the people who may have concerns about them, that they are willing to work for their new community. Those who are coming and are skilled or professionals could also volunteer time in their chosen field, as way of getting more points and faster entry. Could making a difference in your community by working in and maintaining it by sacrificing time have a positive effect? Again I’m not saying this because I support it, I like to see if it can be viewed differently and what would it take for the critics to 180 an entrenched view.
