Sadly, he would've been far too modest to have realised how good & loved he was. He was the afternoon sound of a lot of our teenage years, 20s, and way beyond. The stories about his generosity & good vibes to all his friends, potential new colleagues (& rivals) have been very enlightening. God rest your beloved soul, Wrighty.

Listening to this at the news of his passing. He was the soundtrack to my teenage school years. 1987 on a coach back from school - then on a bike and a small radio tucked into my jacket - then finally on a train. An absolute legend.

Steve wright wasn't only a masterclass radiohead dj, he was also one of the best ever interviewers i have had the greatest pleasure listening too. Steve always seemed to make every special guest he had on his show feel at ease and relaxed. I highly enjoyed his humour, he was extrodinarily fast & witty. Many steve wright memories that left me in tears of laughter on numerous occasions.

Listened to Steve Wright from the early’80s at school and during my apprenticeship as an Electrician in the late ‘80s! he was the afternoon guy right through the ‘90s as well - now in my ‘50s and Steve rocks Pick of the Pops 👍😊

Steve Wright connects with the public. We all feel like he’s speaking to us personally. His choice of music is great. The show was never boring had a variety of interviews and made us laugh. Still missing him and the team. Bad decision BBC Radio

I'd forgotten about the posse format and Phil Cornwell's impersonations making Steve Wright's show lively and lovable. Thank you, you've rightly given Steve's In The Afternoon show a well deserved review for posterity and a place to come to on this day of his passing on....

Here is the best story I heard about Steve Wright and his Afternoon Show. Some years ago Steve had impressionist Phil Cornwell doing his take on Mick Jagger. Sometimes "Keith Richards" - who could have been the John Sessions (RIP) would join "Mick" on the show. So "Mick and Keef" would have their little conversation, usually ending in one ribbing the other. After one of these episodes, SW was told that the real Mick Jagger had heard the skit, and said to one of his own p.a's something like "When did I do that radio show? I don't remember being at the BBC. Can you check when I was there?" Hat's off to Phil Cornwell for nailing Michael Philip Jagger to a t. Many thanks to Steve Wright for all of the music, characters and smiles over his career at the BBC.

Steve Wright just had the common touch in such a natural and effortless way. I think his peak was on Radio One when he was full on zoo format with the posse. I am still reduced to tears of laughter at some of the sketches from those times. He was still just as engaging on Radio Two but with his wings a little clipped. RIP.

Steve Wright was/is an intelligent and amusing broadcaster. I enjoyed his radio 1 afternoon show as a teenager, and rediscovered him in my 40s on Radio2. I think he changed less than I did in the years in between. To everything a season, and perhaps it's just as well to call time on him now.

I still think it should be Sir Steve Wright. The guy cheered up a whole nation from the 70´s 80´s 90´s and 00´s and there´s nobody else who can say that and command such a huge following. Depressed in the 70´s listen to SW and your smiling in seconds, the 80´s everything is nuclear war and SW has people throwing the phone down, and he genuinely made people forget their problems, albeit for a few hours a day but thats what he could do. He MADE Radio 1 in the 80´s and along with Simon Bates and his "Our Tune" and "Woo Gary Davis" and not forgetting DLT, These guys rocked the UK radio industry. They are all legends and anyone 35 and older will have great memories of them. If I could I would bring back as many as I could to do a one day wonder and use their old schedule from the early 80´s and i promise you if would be MASSIVE...Steve, Gary, DLT, Simon and the rest if you´re reading this PLEASE consider doing a one day Radio 1 show on line. You guy´s are LEGENDS.

It’s like when the bbc removed clarkson , the professional replacements are great, but the chemistry between them it’s not and never will be the same, I don’t watch it any more. Same with wrighty, he( along with Tim smith, Janey lee Grace and the bobster) where like having a group of friends drop by your house for llvely, funny and intelligent chat with great music. Scott mills can’t even get close to that, professional as he is. I’ve deleted my bbc sounds app. Because I’ve finished with radio 2.

I can't make Steve Wright out. I used to listen to him many years ago when he had Dianne Oxberry in his posse and I remember her last show on air when he was saying an effusive goodbye. Then I forgot all about that, and her, until she bizarrely (i thought) turned up as the weather person on BBC north west. She was brilliant and made her way from that to presenting. Horrifically she died quite suddenly three years ago, it made the national news, and the great and good made well-deserved tributes to her.........and from Steve Wright.... nothing... tumbleweed... nada.... zilch. I thought that was really bizarre as she worked with him for a long time. I think he's a strange guy

Unfair. She was not on Radio 1 for that long and it was decades ago. Her death is tragic ( I live in the BBC North West catchment area and remember the coverage). But the criticism of him is unwarranted in this instance.

Interesting little episode. No doubt Steve is very good at what he does technically. I always got the impression that for all his years as a DJ it felt he didn't know that much about music. Does that matter these days? Probably not. Scott Mills replacing him seems a dull choice though. Shaun Keaveny would have been way more interesting for me. Still, at least it's not one of their non DJ "celebrity" names they've put in that slot.

I think that Wright himself retrospectively acknowledged that the 'Gay Cavalieroes" were disrespectful to gay people. I first listened to his Radio1 show in the summer of 1982; it was considered fairly anarchic in the 80s and 90s.

210 came before Lux! Steve Wright made singles NOT albums. Cert not a "masterclass" in factual accuracy! That all said, I think it was good you covered the BIG story of the BIG show, and Trevor gives us his take on the man based on first hand experience, but after his subtle dig at DLT, I doubt many radio presenters go to him for good references.

Have a good retirement Steve. BBC Radio2 has just about finished its mission to alienate the middle-aged audience, but with more and more digital free-to-air and subscription channels on more and more devices, the BBC is practically irrelevant anyway. Take away the licence fee and it's dead in the water.
