Talk to Commercial guys, talk to Towing companies, you wont find bigger fans of Suzuki Outboards from businesses that use their boats for work. In short Suzuki has come a long way. I was lucky enough to Speak to Instagram sensation,Alfonso from Atlantic Marine ,about why he loves selling Suzuki Outboards.
Protected by the Mastry line, Suzuki outboards are slowly taking over the re-power market in South Florida. We get a little deeper with Mastry's very own partner , David and he explained the advantages he feels gives Suzuki outboards an edge.

I was running a boating enforcement operation and encountered continued problems with twin outboard setups due to running them well past 2k hours and couldn't get budgeted for replacement vessels. Our well-respected mechanic in town told me that my vessels were solid and if I could convince the organization to repower vs. replace, he really thought highly of Suzuki outboards. Having had a good experience with Suzuki patrol dirt bikes, I took the expert's advice & surprisingly got the authorization to quickly repower the vessels. I left the boating enforcement unit 4 years later, without encountering any issues outside normal maintenance for the Suzuki's, which were run hard. Like my patrol dirt bike vs. Honda's & KTM's we had, the Suzuki just kept going & going and I've come to believe their outboard motors are the same way. Dependability is what I came to value most when relying on equipment to do a job.

In 1999 in Jacksonville Florida I bought the 26th made DF40 horsepower Suzuki engine made on the first day of production. It made it to Jacksonville from Japan in less than a month. On June 8th 2024 I bought a new Suzuki DF50 to repower that same boat. The DF40 was the very first electronic fuel injected four-stroke engine produced by Suzuki. I had been working on electronic fuel injection systems since Volkswagen came out with the very first Bosch system on their type III models in 1968 when I was a Volkswagen mechanic. People asked me why water was running out my engine when the engine was not running. I had to explain to them the engine WAS running, to which they replied HOLY SMOKES that thing is quiet. So on the sides of my boat is the name HOLY SMOKES in old English lettering like you would find on a Bible.

The explination of the gear system on the Suzuki was a bad explination. It works just like first gear on a car to get faster acceleration. In order to get to max power, you have to get up in the revs. You can't get high in the revs pushing a big prop with high pitch. So they gear the prop down to get more torque and higher revs of the engine. As the speed of the boat increases, you go up one gear to allow the engine to rev lower to maintain speed. It is the concept of a transmission. Also, the engine was not moved forward for weight shift that allowed the gearing. The engine was moved forward for the gearing allowing for the weight shift.

seemed good to me. larger prop makes up for lower gearing. lower gearing gives motor advantage to turn that larger prop. like big ass drag radials, need low 1st.

So.. Suzuki added more parts to the engine to make it accelerate better, and with that adding more weight to the engine and with that to the boat. It always comes down to the total weight and horse power / torque. While every engine produces 100HP, it doesn't necessarily means same torque. And I'm guessing an Evinrude ETEC G2 would still accelerate faster, being it's a 2-stroke and lighter. And ETECs are apparently very clean, so it's a moot point for mixture burning. On old 2-strokes? Aw gawd, they can be used as mosquito repellents XD

Weight to horse power is better with a 2 stroke. I bought a Suky 15 horse short shaft. Lasted about 40 days. Point is' the shaft length of the older motors were short and lighter. And as for warranty good luck, if you bought your motor on line expect any maintenance to be at least half the cost of the unit. This is not just Suzuki , but all 4 strokes.

The 6 year suzukui warranty is the only thing greater than this motor. I've had two boats with yamahas prior to this, this is definitely less maintenance, less repair. Buyer beware. We bought a new 2018 Suzuki DF6AS2 lemon engine. It’s all over the forums that these small 4 cycle engines are defective. We have a lemon and know of at least four or five others with problems, all related to seizing exhaust valves, if the engines are stored for longer than a few weeks without use. Some people have been able to get refunds, and some like me, may have to junk the engine out and buy something that is reliable. These engines are cheaper for a reason. Suzuki should have stuck with motorcycles, and left the marine engines to the people who know how to build an engine that will stand up to Marine conditions.

The materials used in the valve train cannot stand up to being stored in a Marine environment. The engines have to be put away indoors, in a dry room. Suzuki even states this in the owners manual. . If you store them on the cockpit of your boat, the. The valves will be frozen when you try to use it. I have been storing the engine in a dry garage, and haven’t had the problem. What the salesman is saying is wrong. He says that they go faster because they can swing a 25" pitch whereas the competition can only swing a 23" pitch. But they can do that because of the 2.59:1 gear ratio, where say a Murcury (let's consider the 115s of both) has a 2.08. Look at the numbers. Ignoring slip, which is not a product of the engine, A Suzuki swinging a 25" pitch prop at 5,500 engine rpms with a 2.59 gear ratio, will travel 4,424 ft in a minute. However, the Merc, with a 2.08 gear ratio, swinginf a 23" pitch prop at the same rpms will travel 5,068 ft in a minute. The lower gear ratio, while increasing torque, also slows the actual propeller rpms down. The Suzuki would have to be running 6,300 rpm to match because of the higher gear ratio - even with the 25" pitch prop.

Alfred Montaner - my statement “IS” based on facts, I own a new Suzuki and have had exactly issues I detailed. Rather than blame me for fear mongoring, you should re-visit your therapist and explain your pessimism, inabilities to deal with facts, and a willingness to defend issues relevant to poor products developed and sold to hard working Americans. In fact, Mastery motors failed to resolve the issue. Sales Suzuki Dealer refused to work on the motor.

"Suzuki doesn't have warranty issues" Then, literally the next sentence out of his mouth, "When a Suzuki owner has an issue, Suzuki takes care of them right away." Bottom line, aside from the rare production issue, all outboards today are high quality and dependable. I just repowered my boat and I considered Suzuki but ultimately I went with Yamaha because I was replacing a Yamaha and was able to use the existing rigging.

@@TheMrkylester101 Yep. The 70hp Yamaha is the same motor as the 50 and 60 Yamaha. The 75hp Yamaha is based off the 90 and 115. The Suzuki 70hp has more balls than the Yamaha 70. 1.0l for the Yami and 1.5l for the Suzuki. A lot of consumers out there really don't know much about what they buy.

Clever marketing, good product, but not outstanding or great. The only game changer here in outboards were the Evinrude G2. Like’m or love them, but they where real innovate. Remember when Mercury had a clause allowing Yamaha access to the US market due to a clause after co-opting on cheaper outboards. Out of that came Mariner. If there is one thing the Japanese can, it’s copying what everybody else is doing. Only better I guess. For myself, I’ll never run anything else than a two-stroke…. When that time comes, I’ll switch to inboard diesel….

Recently had a family member purchase a 90 Suzuki outboard from a "dealership" in the Orlando Florida area! ( was a repower on a flats boat) dealership provided financing through Suzuki! Literally waited months for install!! Loan payments became due prior to install!! Had to literally threaten to come pick up boat several times! Install and rigging was total garbage!! Install was literally done on the day boat was forcefully picked up!! Looked like a bunch of monkeys rigged this boat! Used parts were installed, steering system not hooked up, greasy finger prints and the list goes on!! Haha! Unreal!! Buyer beware!! Do your homework before repower and especially if you decide to finance through a dealership!!
