In March, the IMF put out a note that illustrated why India should quicken its ‘green’ investments.
It said that achieving net zero - which India aims to reach by 2070 - will require adjustments to how people live, work, and move around-and some of these changes will be costly.
First, India expects to increase investments in coal-fired power plants to help power economic growth, but the IMF says that by limiting these investments, substantial irreversible fixed costs could be saved.
Second, early scaling up of renewable energy allows for a more gradual policy adjustment, which may be less politically costly, and for a more continual adoption of new technologies. Costs can also be amortised over longer periods.
What is India's power generation status, given its climate goals? We take a look at some interesting data points, courtesy the IMF.

India is heading in the right direction. In my opinion, nuclear power should also be in the mix.

India needs to ensure they also have facilities to safely dispose of its own nuclear waste from its power plants. Built alongside the plants.

Not covered in the article but the primary reason is the increase in price of fuel. We are also seeing an increase in manpower costs and capital costs ( essentially die to increase in materials cost globally). In addition, funding for coal projects is now more difficult as many agencies do not fund them. On top of all this, these plants have a minimum renewable power purchase obligation. So when conditions are favourable for renewables, the thermal plants are forced to run at low load factors resulting in low eff8ciencies thus increasing operating cost further. From a scientific perspective, the least polluting, from a lfr cycle load perspective, is nuclear but activitists, politicians, journalists and bureaucrats have shot down the opinion of scientists

They need turbines which require copper and rare earth metals like Neodymiun. They also consume lots of concrete and steel to build the structures. They are megaprojects so both manpower and materials are costlier to build them. India imports a lot of Coal from Indonesia and Australia. 10s of billions of dollars are spend on importing coal. Running mines is costly and polluting too. Solar is cheaper than wind as it consumes less copper and rare earth metals. Wind turbines need very powerful permanent magnets made from Neodymium. But the maintainence cost of these are very low and the fuel is free.

Can you make a video on how does the price of final product (i.e, petrol, diesel) obtained from imported crude oil differ from those that are domestically extracted and then refined? Also, how is the parity ensured or is there a price differential? As in the latter case, it would create a rush to buy final product obtained from domestically extracted crude oil.

I just learnt that France releases about 40gm per kwh of energy generated whereas in India it is around 900gm per kwh. Definitely, we need to emphasize nuclear and renewable sources.

India should ensure that it's mostly poor are able to access electricity at low cost, various studies show that access to low cost energy will lead to better quality of life for people. Our focus should be to improve quality of life of our people to global average than trying obey European orders and get bribes.

In fact we cant win war against climate change but we can alleviation pollution.we should embed the renewable sources and future electricity generation device is SMALL MODULAR REACTORS (SMR) . Cost of electricity unit is mich lesser as analogous to non renewable sources. See this summer how temperature mounting as analogous to before summer. If we don't took any measures then its will dangerous in next summer.

Another instance of extremely lazy journalism. The big difference between Coal and renewables is that Coal is intended fir base load operations. This means the Coal.plant can deliver 100% of the installed piwer and often operates above 90% PLF. The government policy of promoting renewables which deliver between 10 and 20% annual PLF means Coal plants have to operate at less than optimal efficiency redukting in higher opersting costs as well as increased emissions per unit of power actually generated. Further, despite lot of push for Solar, the fact is the life cycle emission of solar is around half of the life cycle emissions of coal. There are reasons to promote solar and Modi's push for globally connected solar network. These find little support in western countries or the activists who produce non scientific nonsense. Hindu prefers to buy their knowledge from such people instead of asking its reporters to delve into a subject. Very disappiinting and what a falll for The Hindu.

There is a difference in installed capacity and production. Coal has only 52 % installed capacity but produces 75% of India's electricity. Any type of power storage is very costly and power is generated at random times in renewable.
