In this video:
It all started with U.S. soldiers stationed in England during WWI. The toilets in England at the time were predominately made by the company “Thomas Crapper & Co Ltd”, with the company’s name appearing on the toilets. The soldiers took to calling toilets “The Crapper” and brought that slang term for the toilet back with them to the United States.

Crapper was the first to the patent office so he got the fame. The other two inventors he beat out, Francis Poop and Edwin C. Turd, were soon forgotten.

I know it has something to do with, when it was invented, a majority of people being illiterate. Putting "men" on a door wouldn't have worked, but moon is phonetically similar, and an easy symbol to recognize. I'm not absolute on this reasoning however, so I'm really interested in what Daven, Simon, and their research team could turn up. The idea of the heart on German doors intrigues me a great deal, though. Perhaps a similar reason exists?

the word 'shit' came from bull manure transported by ship.If it was transported at or near the bottom of the vessel it would get wet and liquefy is those days. So they would label the manure 'Ship High In Transport 'to prevent it from getting wet.

Does anyone want to know why the card game known as _Solitaire_ in the US and Canada is sometimes called _Klondike_ elsewhere in the world or on some solo card game apps for your phone/computer/tablet/laptop? George Hamvas Hummerich in every phone app I have ever downloaded with multiple kinds of solo card games, the traditional one is called _Klondike_. So you need to do more research. I'm not entirely sure where those places are, but I am certain they exist based on the experience I have had with phone apps for solo card games.
@mahenonz
@mahenonz 7 жыл бұрын
batmanfanforever08 I think the term Solitaire covers all solo card games and Klondike is one specific game. In New Zealand we call these games Patience and Solitaire is a completely different game played with pegs. Although given the prevalence of computer games called Solitaire this may be changing among younger people.

Now why is the toilet also referred to as the loo
@r0bw00d
@r0bw00d 7 жыл бұрын
The etymology of loo is obscure. The Oxford English Dictionary notes the 1922 appearance of "How much cost? Waterloo. Watercloset." in James Joyce's novel _Ulysses_ and defers to Alan S. C. Ross's arguments that it derived in some fashion from the site of Napoleon's 1815 defeat. In the 1950s the use of the word "loo" was considered one of the markers of British upper-class speech, featuring in a famous essay, "U and non-U English". "Loo" may have derived from a corruption of French l'eau ("water"), _gare à l'eau_ ("mind the water", used in reference to emptying chamber pots into the street from an upper-story window), lieu ("place"), _lieu d'aisance_ ("place of ease", used euphemistically for a toilet), or _lieu à l'anglaise_ ("English place", used from around 1770 to refer to English-style toilets installed for travelers). Other proposed etymologies include a supposed tendency to place toilets in room 100 (hence "loo") in English hotels, a dialectical corruption of the nautical term "lee" in reference to the need to urinate and defecate with the wind prior to the advent of head pumps, or the 17th-century preacher Louis Bourdaloue, whose long sermons at Paris's Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis prompted his parishioners to bring along chamber pots.

Ahhhhhh, but why is the toilet on a ship called a head?
@DodiTov
@DodiTov 7 жыл бұрын
When ships were wooden, a literal hole was cut into the bulkhead to relieve one's self. This hole led directly to the ocean and thus waste was "overboard". Since it was cut into the ship itself, one in modesty eventually said "head" to mean going to the toilet. Since the captain's wife and children could be onboard along with female passengers, it was rude to say that you had to relieve yourself and since everyone knew where that particular bulkhead opening was, it became standard practice to use the term on a ship. The practice has continued to this day.

While probably true, the type of thinking behind such modesty is ridiculous. Obviously women and children also go to the bathroom.
