Omg you forgot some IMPORTANT LORE about My Time (2009) -- This was in 2009, and at around this time the BBC had been doing a lot of Talent shows with Andrew Lloyd Webber to find the lead role for a musical he was going to be producing a West End run of, a la X Factor or Britain's Got Talent, hosted by Graham Norton. There was "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria" in 2006 for The Sound of Music; "Any Dream Will Do" for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 2007; and "I'd Do Anything" for Oliver! The next year they did a similar competition but instead of it being for a role on the West End, the prize was to compete in Eurovision and sing the Song Andrew Lloyd Webber had written. It was a multi-week National Final like those other talent shows and in the final all three sang their version of the song and Jade one (partly, I think, because she was the only woman left and so she stood out against the other two who were guys, and all three performances were much the same). So that's where Jade Ewen came from. I personally think the melody of the song itself is good, but the lyrics are very mediocre and that's kind of telling because ALW in ALL of his famous musicals partnered with someone else to write the lyrics because he's kind of shit at it.

Btw, last year the sound mixing for the TV broadcast was generally very weird, I don't know what was the issue, or maybe it wasn't an issue but a lot of artists used this extra vocal doubling so the ones who didn't use it were left too silent? I would argue that Poland, Cyprus, Denmark all used crazy amount of main vocal backings so singing live has lost all meaning. Whereas Mae, Luke (serbia) also maybe La Zarra were barely heard. I think the sound was really problematic on 2023.

When many non English-speaking countries see ESC as a way to showcase their culture and artists, the UK has snubbed the contest and labeled it as "a joke" dominated by politics. I think that explains why the BBC had never cared (Up until recently) and strong entries. When in other countries, going to ESC is regarded as an honor, the British mainstream music scene has seen ESC as something shameful and as a low point for anyone's career.

@in_wino_veritas

Yeah,can't remember Lucy Jones and Bonnie Taylor or that boys duo, someone plus Josh? I think, I've already butchered all of their names. Or Michael Rice. At least, I can remember his name. I really struggle to remember their entries and have to think for a second what they even sounded like. But yeah, from the songs since 2009, I liked 2009, 2014, 2018 and 2022. 2011 and 2015 were OK as well. And Mae's song was OK, but it flopped because she can't sing. I also don't get, how so-called professional juries could rank her above Germany, Croatia, Poland, Serbia and especially Moldova. All of them (OK, maybe except for Luke, but he's talking anyway, not singing) can sing and also had more ambitious and less mainstream, less pop proposals with much deeper lyrics. The public was correct, where she finished 2nd to last, just ahead of this horrible Spain song with the probably dumbest lyrics ever (and not without some vocal issues either). The public lays more focus on vocals and lyrics (and uniqueness) than the jury does. Yeah, 2023 wasn't a bad proposal, it would have been at least midtable (Top 10 with the mainstream loving juries, who love generic songs and hate everything not pop), had it been sung by a somewhat good singer. Now, they're gonna send a person to Malmö who allegedly isn't a good live performer either, probably still better than Mae, though. Let's hope. Sympathy for Palestinians and disgust for the human rights violations committed by Israel alone isn't gonna bring him a spot in the Top 10. And he might be one of dozens of artists this year who thinks that. Now, the odds have him in first place and Israel in second place, because without hardly any songs to judge them on, my guess is, that each side of the spectrum in this conflict has just bet on the country or artist they align with. That's all. Sorry for my novel.

Love the content, as always! It's always so interesting hearing the live version vs. the recorded version. I don't know what happened last year but a lot of artists and countries suffered from a very dodgy sound mix. Mae suffered, as did Salena and Teya's 'Who the Hell is Edgar?' which is a top tier song - recorded! - but had spotty sound mixing and honestly was staged badly as well. I basically have two separate tier lists for songs live and recorded and there's often such a difference in quality.

This is bit of a theme for UK performances. The artists aren't really prepared for the show. I'm not going to guess how much is the fault of the artists and how much is the because poor support, but stuff like that just shouldn't be happening. If you need your in-ear to sing, you bring it with you. If you don't bring it with you because you think one will be provided, you check for what you would get as soon as you get there, to check fit. If they can't provide you one at that time, you find an audio equipment store and go buy one, or have someone bring your in-ear from home. They are there multiple days. It could have been solved.

Thank you so much for this video. Honestly more Eurovision content from you is a 100% plus. In fact I will go so far as to say you are my favourite Eurovision content creators on YT. I'm also so pleased that you had Lucie and Molly in your top 3 as they are my favourites that we have produced and both absolutely deserved top 10 in their years even possibly top 5 spots (I honestly thought Lucie might have won 2017) More Eurovision content please this was such a fun watch. Love you both ❤

Been watching Eurovision since the very beginning. Loved your review and totally agree with your choices. Cannot believe the dross we have been churning out since 2000 but we are beginning to find our way back. I have high hopes that Olli will not let us down even if he is not first. look forward to more of your thoughts

I was there in 2014 and in the area it sounded flat had no energy to it. Molly was unforgettable that night

Love this. Just to touch on James Newman's 2020 song, apparently they were really going to play on the icy theme of the video for the live performance with an LED platform and then the stage "floods" (through the power of AI?) with water. This was what I read in an article somewhere...

This has to be my fourth or fifth rewatch! The utter schadenfreude of it is so bloody funny, as are you two dolls 😍 Your genuine love and respect for the entire Eurovision experience is so contagious too! I'm guessing this won't be my last rewatch either 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤

The first Eurovision I ever watched was 2009 with the ALW song as UK's entry. I had no idea about the bad song streak at the time, so it's been a wild and fun ride to witness since then.

also like i think the most interesting thing is how both 2017 and 2022 were never really fan faves till the rehearsals- sure sam was popular but nobody expected a possible win till rehearsals!!!
