Why is the Victorian era considered so spooky?

Why do we think of the late 19th century as being the perfect setting for any ghost story?
I apologise for the awful audio in the second half of this video. My microphone broke and I'm working on getting it fixed.

Ah, the Victorian Era and ghost stories! I can think of nothing more fun than to own a Victorian or Georgian house someday and have ghost story parties by candlelight (no electricity), where all the guests take turns sharing spooky and scary stories round the table. Have done it before, and it was incredibly fun!

Near flawless quality for a starting video. It's well put together and had a lot of research put into it. Of recent, I've been interested in the Victorian era, myself. You're definitely confirming that I'm on the right path. Also, 10:42 You creep. 😆

Also, the Victorian was marked by a decline in Christian belief, which was why death became something so terrifying for many. People started to explore alternatives, like the theory of evolution as opposed to biblical creation, and slowly, they started to delve into "forbidden" stuff like monsters, vampires, seances, occult stuff, etc. Hence you have horror classics like Count Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde written during Victorian times. No more bright, witty & sunny works like those by Jane Austen.

Funny things, maybe just sinchronicites. My grandmother, apart from other random jobs, used to make some (phony) seances in order to gain some money and raise 6 children - my father among them - back in the 1940's to 1950's. My father, deep down, disaproved all that spiritualist stuff. Anyway, I am watching this video on November 2020, and my father died of Covid complications.....18 jul 2020 (the date of this video upload). Spooky, creepy? Not sure but I really loved the message: there were so many deaths in those years (all over the world), that it was hard to cope with losing the loving ones, so they searched for answers in the seances, or elsewhere...just as we are doing these days. A very nice video, not only instructional for those among us from other countries, but also kind of fun and beautiful landscapes.

That "Death Photography" was certainly a strange one, at least by today's standards. I guess I understand it, a last chance (and with the high price of early photography) likely the only chance to have an image of the deceased. There are entire sites dedicated to "post mortem photography" and some are down right weird, photos of young brother's and sisters playing with blocks with their dead sibling propped up in the middle of the photo, like she is part of the game.

" there's not a feminist one who didn't know their way around the seance table" women during the victorian era weren't looked down upon during that time period, but rather had the opposite, a lot of overprotective men who still wanted tradition in spite of the changing nature of the world. Even still, there were some who would seek the power of women for profit by selling their protection as oppression in order to manipulate them into working for them in factories at reduced wages. So, do you see women as cogs in a machine to do everything that a man should be doing for his family, or as mothers and partners who deserve male love, protection, and respect? I don't like using and abusing women, so to me feminism is a crime against the feminine.
