Why is the Y chromosome so short? Is it still shrinking?

The Y chromosome looks like a mistake, but its story is actually super interesting. Thank you everyone who watches.

Its because the Y chromosomes are wearing fruit of the looms, but if it was wearing briefs or boxers it would appear longer

Hi, I am a biologist from Brazil, nice meeting you! I wis everyoe knew how cool this is. This story about the Y chromossome you just taught me, links so beautifuly with the concept of the Selfish Gene. It is actually hapenning a this very last moment.

I wonder if we can find older, bigger copies of Y chromosomes in the fossil record and simulate what guys used to look like before so many of their genes were ditched! Maybe even create a system where they have two Y’s to recombine with each other (one turns off, like with the X’s in women)

I honestly think that the Y chromosome shrinking may be something that's selected for, not because of broken genes necessarily, but for genetic volatility in males which are not only the more expendable sex but also have a higher ability to spread their genes amongst a population. Males already are the more variable sex when it comes to measured traits and the lack of a chromosome to effectively "compete" for what is coded/not coded also presents men(as in XY karyotype, as some of these disorders make you intersex like CAIS) being the overwhelming majority of those who suffer from X-recessive disorders for obvious reasons. The idea being that men with Y chromosomes that have less genes to potentially counteract recessive issues on their X chromosome can instead present more clearly all of the traits on said chromosome and have deleterious and recessive genes be selected against. Also if you find yourself more interested in this stuff then you might find the idea of human male haplogroups and their dominance over various populations over time interesting. PBS Eons also recently did a video on human Y chromosomes overtaking Neanderthal Y chromosomes in the past("We Met Neanderthals Way Earlier Than We Thought" is the video title).

you're right but this video isn't really about genetics, it's about performing as a quirky intelligent persona, she probably read this off wikipedia 10 minutes before turning the camera on, obviously does not have a rigorous understanding of genetics at all and just wants to promote feminist psuedoscientific distortions to come off like a girlboss or something, too many Marvel movies rotted her brain, your comment will go completely over her head and she will probably get offended by it lol

@@ventishiddencentralmilker4429 It is about genetics. She's explaining stuff in great detail. You're just not paying attention. There is nothing psuedoscientific about it. There are other videos of people confirming what's she going on about.

Seems more likely that genes which don't select for males vs female might not be critical and are therefore being lost. Who knows what could happen, maybe it'll result in having 48 chromosome pairs with everyone having XX and ( YY or YY' )
