There's a story I heard once, of the team who developed insulin as a treatment for diabetes. They did indeed win the Nobel Prize for Medicine (there was some dispute and eventually winners shared their winnings) but I think they experienced something far more impressive. At that time, the only treatment for diabetes was malnutrition. Thus diabetes wards in every major hospital included children with the disease, in comas and slowly starving to death as their doctors, nurses, and families watched in agony, hoping for a miracle. But the developers of insulin made as large a batch as they could, went to the local hospital, headed for the diabetic ward and began giving shots to the children there, one by one. It was a large room,with at least three long rows of beds, each containing a dying child who would presumably never wake up. As they finished giving the last child an injection, the very first child woke up. Followed by the next, and the next and the next. LIke three long rows of dominoes. A miracle. I cannot imagine receiving the Nobel Prize came anywhere near the power and glory of that moment. To know, to see proof, you had just saving millions and millions of children otherwise doomed--and billions more yet to be born. That moment, must have been so utterly wonderful.

@harmonicarchipelgo9351 4 жыл бұрын
@@rickc2102 You could just as easily say that engineering/medicine are the application and physics and chemistry are just the language. You will notice that developments in language don't really affect what kind of literature you can write, but progress in science is impossible without progress in mathematics. So your analogy is pretty thin. In fact, mathematics has a lot of direct applications in life without being filtered through another field. Statistics, cryptography, game theory, acoustics, risk assessment, computer science (which is essentially a branch of math, not really a separate field) to name a few.

The Nobel Prize for Economics is decided on by the Swedish Bankers Association. Conflict of interest anyone? It is not one of the prizes suggested by Nobel himself but instituted by the bank responsible for managing Nobel's endowment. John Kenneth Galbraith, whose contribution to Economics is much greater, never received a Nobel nomination.

I'll probably get a lot of flak for this one. But, when I think of mathematics, I think of it as the tool we use to better represent natural phenomena. While science is our tool to understand the natural universe, mathematics is the tool we use to give a more quantitative representation to science. It's sort of the "language of science." By itself, mathematics doesn't really do much. It must be applied to some end to truly be of use. An illustration could be the prize for literature. You have a prize for some achievement in writing. Simply knowing a language isn't awarded, nor is developing a language. You must use that language for some worthwhile end.
@Josh729J

contributing to the very understanding of nature and reality is of no use? I feel like people who say "math is just a language" arent very good at math. You use math to save lives all the time. The calculations that put us on the moon should be a nobel prize
@johnc1014
@johnc1014 4 жыл бұрын
@@Josh729J Science contributes to that understanding of nature. Mathematics is the tool used to represent said science and give it a more fuller meaning. By the way, your statement about not being "very good at math" is more of an ad hominem logical fallacy. That said, I used to be an engineering major. I've taken enough math courses and I know fair bit of mathematics. Now, try explaining how exactly math alone saves lives? I can certainly tell you how mathematical calculations within a scientific field save lives. Putting a man on the moon involves a great deal of physics, chemistry, software development, a plethora of engineering, and much more. Virtually all of this involves mathematical representation of said fields. What is physics without mathematics, but some basic observation of natural phenomena behaving in some generic way? Mathematical calculations, formulas, and understanding how it all comes together and is related, this is vital. So, of course, mathematics has tremendous value. But, that value is in its application.
@Josh729J
@Josh729J 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnc1014 yes, the value is in its applications. But thinking of math as simply a language is not correct. You can create and develop anything using math, just because you have the resources to test the math makes putting those resources to use more valuable? It doesnt. If I can mathematically determine a way to feed a population, the math should be praised. Not the workers who apply it?

The part about historical anecdotes in university IS SO TRUE!!! For philosophy it's the death of Socrates that you constantly hear described by multiple professors... And I'm pretty sure sometimes they contradict each other with some of the small details like whether or not dying from hemlock poisoning is peaceful or unbearably painful...

Due to COVID-19, the NBA, (National Basketball Association), and the NSA, (National Soccer Association), are having a training and fitness session held at Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida, USA. You had spoken of a $7,000 dinner which Mother Teresa snubbed, stating, "the money can be used for a better purpose". The sports figures attending the Disney World event are given their choices of various luncheon meals, which cost $65 per meal. One of the players tweeted his lunch, before it was eaten and included the menu from which he chose his meal. For $65 he received a sandwich, a bag of crisps, a small bowl of "potato salad" and a bottle of water. It was nowhere near what the menu described, except in the loosest terms. (Sort of like reading an automobile brochure and comparing to the actual car, "something's not right"). To the great relief of the players, they didn't have to pay for the meals, but their sponsoring Association did have to pay. Personally, I would have sent the meal back, chosen a meal from "Room Service", at a much less expensive cost and called it good. Scenario: Association: "Joe, I see that you haven't been eating while you are here. Is there anything wrong?" Joe: "Well, yeah. The meals suck and are way too expensive." Association: "But Joe, We are paying for the meals. I'm looking at a menu right now. How can these offerings suck?" Joe:, "Dude, All I got, from that same menu, was a damn sandwich, bag of chips, some potato salad and a bottle of water." Association:, "Oh, uh. Well, I don't know what to say. Let me do some research. (ie, let him ask someone higher up then he is.) Joe:, "You do that Bro. In the meantime, I'll stick to the room service menu." Association:, "Well, at least let us pay for those meals." Joe: "I don't have a problem with that."

Fortunately there is an ignoble prize for Mathematics. For example in 2015 it was awarded to Elisabeth Oberzaucher [AUSTRIA, GERMANY, UK] and Karl Grammer [AUSTRIA, GERMANY], for trying to use mathematical techniques to determine whether and how Moulay Ismael the Bloodthirsty, the Sharifian Emperor of Morocco, managed, during the years from 1697 through 1727, to father 888 children. Physics = Mathematics. If you study Math and don't become a physicist you become a teacher, so a Nobel prize for Math would just be a Nobel prize for teaching. When was the last time we heard of a breakthrough in math? There is a Nobel prize for math, and we call it Physics.
