It seems obvious that their happiness is directly related to how little they have had to deal with forced colonization and forced "development" from outside influences. Essentially, they lack the oppressive nature of outside influences.

A littel inside ; Vanuatu was Colonized by both England and France, at the same time . We know our history ,Know that our ancestors were, soled into slavery, Poisoned , raped and Killed for their lands ,and we're a young nation , so our history very recently for us . After our independence from the 2 colonizers . We chose Our nation name Vanuatu meaning "our land" instead of trying to correct the wrongs of the past and live backwards in hate and unforgivenness towards our oppressors . We want to live forward in Hope and Happiness of the Blessing that is this small Isalnd Nation ,which is Home.,🤗✨️ 🌴

@@Blue-yp5mz another absentees of the history? Lol. It was Soeharto who made a deal to American company (named freeport) to exploit that mining. And it was definitely one of the biggest trigger, that new york agreement which basically gave Indonesia the rights to occupy Papua happened. After all, it's all about business. And i think from such a case that infamous theory of 'resources curse' is simply true. Vanuatu can be this free and live their own philosophy of life bcos they have no resources like Papua has. That no big & greedy country like Indonesia, USA, or China feels the need to occupy & possess their life.

@@Blue-yp5mz typical defensive answer,, *but still* lol. My point is, it was never morally right, that Papua was 'handed' to Indonesia by US over the possible return that US can grab & exploit the gold & copper mining there at Papua in the future, *that was clearly & directly facilitated by the Indonesia's government.* Not to say the whole process in that referendum that was so full of manipulations which was done by the famous psycho & tyrant leader named Soeharto and its chronies. From those 2 premises alone,, i can understand why Papuans keep asking for their rights to determine their own fate. To be or not to be an independent nation. Since the process was never done even at the slightest sense of fairness at all, hence the result of that referendum has always been a defective one and can never restore the justice for the native people there in the Papua. Unless the current government is willing to swallow their pride and ask for a sorry to the whole Papuans people, for all the bitter history that has happened in the past and must've been hurting all the Papuans hearts & dignity. I applause the attentions that the current government gives to Papua and its people, but until the solution can reach its roots of problems, which is the country's recognition of such a bitter history, and start to seeing Papua's issue from Papuans point of views instead of Jakarta's, this issue of separatisms in Papua will always happen & happen again. No matter how much the governemnt tries to rain them with money & infrastructures. Bcos it's not the main problems there.

I'm currently in Vanuatu but was in Samoa a couple of weeks ago. Like Vanuatu, Samoa has a strong and distinctive culture with strong communitarian traits but, unlike Vanuatu, I felt the local Samoans don't value what they have as much as the Ni-Vans. It's a pity because I'm sure the traditional Samoan lifestyle is much healthier than the Western one. The Vanuatu people have a surprisingly strong sense of their identity and self-confidence. I hope Samoan people can find the self-respect that they deserve.

Seems like the islands are occupied by good people. But this evokes much more question? 1) How do you measure happiness? 2) Is this some conservative media propaganda promoting family? 3) Are personal freedoms sacrificed to achieve this happiness? 4) How about Homophobia and Xenophobia in the region? 5) Does listening to elders always lead to the right thing? 6) Is this some kind of Nostalgia trip by the conservative media? 7) Is being not materialistic the answer? 8) If so why on earth are the rich not sharing their wealth, to be more happy? Conclusion: Loved the people and the place. Just wary of the article.
