Intel released a pretty bad ad to their KZfaq channel recently, so naturally Marques and David had a viewing party and pointed out all of the best parts.

@tomi832 2 жыл бұрын
@@h4x0y not really. First of all, Windows is still better suited for X86, and even though it has support for arm for years - almost nothing supports it on windows. Why? Because the PC segment isn't fully controlled like with Macs. If apple decides to move to arm - you can't resist, you can only cope with it so everything got support. But if Microsoft starts supporting it (like it already has), it doesn't mean shit, especially when Qualcomm's chips for PCs are trash compared to Apple, and even compared to intel/AMD. Also, there's still benefits to X86 over Arm, that's why I don't think that we'll fully move to arm on PCs. And AMD's Zen isn't more efficient than M1 right, but it's far more powerful - especially because of Infinity fabric. Sorry, M1 is great and I do think about getting MBA with M2 in the future, but it's not a replacement for desktop PCs, where efficiency is nice but not really a top priority, so Ryzen is crushing the M1 there when it comes to performance, and let's not talk about Threadripper.
@h4x0y
@h4x0y 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomi832 Most of what you said seems spot on. Two little remarks. 1. I said the M1 is best in class in its respective device categories, which is mostly low power 13" laptops. Next week, the M1X will be revealed for higher power Macs. 2. It might be that Qualcomm isn't there yet and that most software hasn't been written for ARM chips, but that COULD change. MS needs to give developers the incentive and the tools to make supporting ARM chips as easy as recompiling.
@tomi832
@tomi832 2 жыл бұрын
@@h4x0y sure, I know about the M1X and I wanna know how it will perform too. And I know that M1 isn't supposed to be high-end, and it does an amazing job at it's category, but I'm talking about replacing X86 in general. Many believe that it's coming soon, and I just think that they don't fully understand it. It won't fully replace it, because of what I already said about desktop PCs. What could happen, is that instead of dominating the PC, X86 and arm could coexist there.

As an Apple user that uses PC’s work since forever, I still can’t stand how bad Windows is with touch. Even now that I have a Surface Pro 7 for work, I never use the touch screen. Touch points are still way too small and it is still an OS designed for a mouse.
@DylanM15
@DylanM15 2 жыл бұрын
That’s my exact issue with windows now too. They attempted probably 5+ times to make it touch compatible but it’s just really not still at all. Not that macOS wouldn’t be cool with touch compatibility I feel like it would have to regress the cursor and keyboard experience for it to be good. So windows is stuck in this weird limbo of putting this awkward partially touch compatible OS on everything. Which is why Apple has been smart keeping them separate OS while unifying them at times with stuff like continuity, sidecar, universal copy and paste and universal control now too. People may disagree but a Windows TabletOS with continuity type features would instantly improve the experience so much.

Windows laptops, on the other hand ... there are so many of them and with weird names like Dell Inspiron 5515 that people have troubles remembering. I can imagine Windows users going like: "Yeah, I have a Dell/Asus/Acer..." and flounder when they're asked which model they're using. I can't imagine any Mac user who cannot tell whether their laptop is an Air or a Pro.

On the touch screen part of the conversation - I had my dream come true with iPad and magic keyboard case. I can use it as a laptop but I can reach out and grab exactly what I want when I want it, instead of scrolling the mouse over to it. Plus I can take the screen off and draw on it if needed. I think I’m writing this comment more as a reminder to my Self: I bought this as a treat to me, to remind me that I’m worth the things that I want and I wanted it because it’s a touch screen laptop that I can take the screen off… it’s magic. So I am 100% one of those people who want to touch their laptop screen. To be clear, I had a high-end asus touch screen laptop for many years and thought that was the pinnacle - until using an iPad and realising how much better it could actually work.

Because no windows machine has a trackpad as good as Apple’s so they had to figure out another way to let their users navigate the OS. For me if Apple added a touchscreen it’d be like the swipe keyboard that I forget my iPhone and iPad have.

I saw this add and it was just so cringe. I really don’t think most Apple users are that blind to that there are other options, they just prefer the Apple options and what comes with those. I’ve never thought of a touchscreen Mac just because they would have to regress macOS to be touch compatible and mouse compatible which is why windows is so wonky to me right now. Also ergonomically there’s something about using a trackpad and keyboard or stylus and touch screen. It feels really awkward blending that at times on a laptop, like it is out of sync and using the trackpad is more precise and on the same plane as the keyboard so the transition is easier. The only time I really do is my iPad Pro because it is touch compatible primarily. Often I take only that and just take the iPad off the magic keyboard as needed. The touch experience is so key and I think that’s where windows and intel obviously is still really really far off with the 2 in 1 dynamic and they’re really blind to it.

I would believe someone would say, I am 100% loyal to apple. I was once working as a tobacco promoter to people that consumed tobacco at a convenience store, and the cashier asked who I'm allowed to engage with. I said that I'm only allowed to speak with people who are and I quote "hell yeah I smoke cigarettes!" 5 minutes later, a lady walks in and goes up to the cash register for some smokes. the cashier asked the lady if she was a smoker, and she said and I quote "hell yeah I smoke cigarettes!"

This is pretty much the equivalent of Shell making an ad for gasoline. "Do you want to be able to get more performance out of your 2006 Camry? Do you want to wait 30 minutes for your car to charge or fill up in two minutes? Don't you want a car that's so loud, everyone in your street wakes up when you start it at 6 in the morning? What if we told you that everything you desire is available TODAY? Buy a gasoline car" Customers have moved on, the industry has moved on (that goes for Intel and electric cars). Why not follow or better yet, start the next thing, Intel?

It's a bit bittersweet but rewarding to see that Intel is at this losing position right now... I remember last time I used Intel which was the i7 7700k which overheated no matter what and it was the same 4C 8T cpu than previous generation with no noticeable change in performance for 400$ in 2017... I don't remember cursing a company that much and wishing them a horrible...horrible journey, they had this coming 100%.

6:46 I agree with Marques completely on this one. Personally as a Mac user, I find touch screens on laptops to be the most useless thing ever, not only does poking your screen going to make it more dirty with fingerprints, its also going to tilt your screen angle or even tilt the whole laptop depending on how heavy your laptop is and how heavy you poke. MacBooks have a great trackpad that works amazingly well, I have not used a mouse for years now because of how good the trackpad is. (Also I have experienced wrist pain in the past with mouses but never with the trackpad). Touch screens work well on iPhones and iPads because of the way we use them. Because we are holding the screen, it it stable and so touches can be precise and thus a good user experience. Whenever I am trying to use my iPhone when its mounted in my car, (which is close to touch screens on the laptop scenario), I get a horrible using experience, and most of the time, I just give up and unmount the iPhone and use it in my hand. If I were asked what my laptop is missing, I probably say the new m1 chip for more performance since my MBP from 2015 is quite outdated.

This is what happened with Android as well: androids and “non-apple” laptops can’t beat iPhones or MacBooks on merit (ie raw performance, real features, and build quality), so they start making random useless gimmicky functions like larger screens and folding phones and folding laptops and all these useless features to attract more customers. These companies are so shameless!
