Playing acoustic n electric guitars 56 yrs so since I mastered that I'm trying violin now lessons once a week from a symphony violinist but because I do have experience at guitar violin is totally different I'm progressing slow but your explanation in this video is correct true it's tough but for myself holding a violin is tiring after 15 minutes cause of posture balance With guitar you hold it anyway you want and it's always in a comfortable place but violin I'm starting to need a neck brace it's very uncomfortable My question is will this uncomfortable feeling go away? I'm going to continue taking lessons once a week but after 2 lessons I'm getting sound off it I'm playing the Titanic theme my heart will go on so it's coming along just that the transitions are tough Seems that the shifting in the holding a violin is screwing me up Any advice?? Your channel is very understandable and fluid thank you

@@tompetty5085 Hi Tom, it's really hard to answer this question. The problem is, the guitar is easier to learn than the violin in the beginning but gets really hard as you progress into the more advanced techniques. However, It's safe to say that you are a "master guitar player" because of the years you've played. Therefore, just about any new instrument is going to seem really tough for you because guitar comes so naturally to you at this point. It's really is a matter of relativity. If your teacher is setting you up with the correct posture/set-up, then it'll be uncomfortable for at least several months, but you'll get used to it. If the set-up is poor, then after many months, you'll still have trouble holding your violin up properly without too much pain/issue. It really comes down to how much you practice and the quality of your teacher. It can be difficult to ascertain which option is true because the violin is somewhat unique, in that it is very difficult in the beginning but gets easier, whereas most instruments are easier, then get hard...

So basically, if learning to touch type on a computer keyboard was like learning the violin: 1- Half the keyboard would be turned 90 degrees so your hands would be in different planes; 2- It wouldn't have any letters or numbers printed on it, so you'd be forced to experiment with and memorize what each key does; 3- You'd have to apply a specific amount of force with your fingers for each key, not more and not less than required, otherwise the letters on screen would come out looking wonky; 4- You'd have to control the specific amount of speed you press the key with as well, not too slow nor too fast; 4- Each individual key would require a different amount of ideal force and speed, so you'd have to learn each one separately; 5- the keys would not be evenly spaced, with keys being more spaced out on one side of the keyboard and more cramped together towards the other side. Let's take a moment to thank the heavens that computer keyboards are not violins.

0:49 1) Independent Hand control : My son plays tabla so he's quite used to controlling either hand independently. So most probably violin maybe "easier" if it's not the first instrument you learn. Either that or you just put in the patient practise to train both hands to move independently. 02:10 2) Counterintuitive technique : If you think of it as playing the violin rather than holding the violin it starts making more sense. To "play" the violin you need to be able to move hands smoothly, lightly and quickly rather than hold in a fixed vice grip. 3) No frets/Play by Ear : Listening to lots of music from a young age is key to developing a good ear. Best part is it's a lot of fun and can be done for a huge amount of time. Just play the Music in the background. Instrumental music esp can be heard in the background while doing most work or otherwise without distrubing you. 4) Violin is Hard to hold : Hindustani/Carnatic violin is played sitting down. The violin is held pointing down and resting on the ankle rather than being gripped by the chin and shoulder as in the Western method. 05:50 5) Sounding good on the violin : a) weight vs speed b) thin vs thick strings c) position between bridge and fretboard.

I’m learning to play the violin on my own. I find it easier to catch on playing songs with longer notes it helps me build my muscle strength. It is also helping me learn the notes and the position my body needs to be in to play certain notes. The faster songs are a little more difficult because you jump from one position to another kind of quickly.

I remember in kindergarten when I did NOT have a violin yet I got my Elena of Avalor guitar and then I got a stick from pickup-sticks and I pretended I played the violin😂😂😂😂😂. Right now I am so good I can even OUIDO on piano and violin. Right now I am still on book 2 and I am suppose to learn vibrato at book 4 but then I already know how, I taught myself how to do vibrato, my violin teacher said to me "since you already know how to do vibrato, you will learn vibrato in book 3" and I was so excited, the time my teacher told me that I was still book 1. My bosses purchased my Louis Carpini from your store, as a Christmas gift last December. I love it. And my teacher is impressed with it, he recently recommended it to another student. I appreciate your videos, they are very informative and entertaining, thank you. I do have one question. Was my violin made in Italy? There’s Italian writing inside of it, but wanted to confirm.
@KennedyViolins
@KennedyViolins 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your Carpini and I appreciate your comment! Regarding your question, the complete answer is probably a lot longer than you'd like but the shorter answer is that, most violins these days are made from components from all around the world and violins are no different. I don't know the whole story with this particular brand but the design is heavily influenced by typical Italian design and methods (hence the Italian name). Most violins are like this but the difference between our violins and most sub-several thousand dollar violins is that every instrument goes through our shop in WA state where our luthiers meticulously assemble and set them up before being sent to the customer. Most violins in this price category are assembled and set-up in China and then sent to the US, and then a retailer simply sends them to the end customer. This is the reason why your teacher was impressed by the violin because most student violins are set up very poorly and hard very hard to play. We have a video that shows our workshop here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJqBgq9ytLHbnZ8.html . I hope that long but short explanation helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

The biggest progress i make is after i'm forced to leave it fir 2 or 3 days because of lack of time. I've played lead and rhythm guitar for 30 years and a big secret is to target your playing: concentrate on slow and accurate. Then leave it and let the muscle memory consolidate whta you've learned. Having the right sized violin for the person is also very important. To big or too little and it's more difficult to play. I'm a small adult, with little hands. A 7/8 or 3/4 is a better fit for me than a 4/4. Much easier to play in tune.

You see that empty blackboard behind the strings? You are supposed to mark that up with whatever musical scheme you are using. For example with violin, most pieces are in the key of D, so you would probably want to mark your violin fingerboard with a standard heptatonic scale in the key of D. Or you could just leave it blank like a fool...

My instructor says I have larger than usual hands for playing the violin. I've always considered my hands average on size but is it true that one's hands can be "too large" for playing the violin? Or are there any sort of "tricks" I could learn to help with my "big hands"? Recommendations would be great. Thanks.

The simplest way to answer your question would be to say that everybody has physiological challenges to learn the violin. Some people may have big fingers, some may have small fingers, some may have double joints etc etc. This is common and all of these challenges can be overcome with good practice techniques and time. If you look online, you will find people that have mastered the violin with vastly different body types. Anybody can learn the violin. It is just a matter of determination, proper practice, and time. Learning the violin is very difficult for everybody but only the most determined and committed will succeed. I've taught hundreds of students over many years that have vastly different situations. All of them can be successful, as you can. 😉

Hi DJ . At 14, you should be easily able to play a full size violin (4/4 size). Many 10 year olds can play and just about all 11 year olds can, so chances are you are fine with a full size. And, of course, the company I recommend for your first violin is Kennedy Violins! www.kennedyviolins.com But you can buy good violins at other places as well, you just have to make sure that they have a longer warranty than 30 days and set-up your violin before they send it to you. Let me know if you have any other questions. 👍

Nice summary! One last point though. I feel the left hand position changing when moving across the strings or up the neck into the higher positions. You don’t really have that near as much on the guitar, if you’re holding them in the proper position in relation to your body. Especially easy fingering on guitars with ergonomic body cutaways, unless you need to bring over your thumb for certain chords. Violin forces your left-hand digits to always have the proper pitch angle in relation to the string, whereas on a guitar with frets there’s a lot more leeway for a good note.

Coming from someone who has been playing the violin for 5 years, I can understand why there's no frets (enabling the fingers to slide up and down the finger board). But why in the world are there no markingss? It seems an effort to make it more difficult to play, and vibrato a means to fudge missed notes. I have put marks on my finger board!

Probably because it legitimately looks a lot prettier without markers in the fingerboard. 🤔 And to make it easier to glide up and down the strings without hurting your left hand fingers of course as you pointed out.

You absolutely can learn the violin. It is extremely difficult and frustrating in the beginning but the key is consistent practice and playing things "correctly" as many times as you can. Don't fall into the trap of playing something until you get it right. Instead, focus on playing a passage or exercise so many times correctly, that you can't play it wrong. Practice doesn't make "perfect'. Practice makes PERMANENT.

I just got my first violin. The G-string is quite difficult to get much sound out of. Do I need more rosin or better strings??

Well, it's impossible to know why there is trouble with the G string. If you didn't buy the violin from Kennedy Violins and from another supplier online, it's possible that the G string is too close to the fingerboard because sometimes set-up is an issue. If it's from KV, then it's possible you just need a little more rosin on your bow.

Yikes. Maybe you should play an A on the computer/phone constantly while tuning the string, to make sure you don't tune too high above A. 😉

Anything could be difficult and anything could be easy it depends on your interest , concentration and dedication towards your goal. Any way thanks for the video I learned a lot of things about violin And I believe if one has mastery in vocal they can learn any instrument easily and efficiently

Can you talk about "Why physics, chemistry, mathematics are so hard to learn?". I bet you don't like physics, chemistry and mathematics.
@KennedyViolins
@KennedyViolins Жыл бұрын
Well, I think there are plenty of opinions out there about this question but my take on it is that the sciences like chem, physics, and math are more difficult than studies such as history, English lit, etc because they require memorization AND practice. When you take a history test, your memory is simply being tested. When you take a math test, your SKILL is being tested. You can't just regurgitate an answer, you have to SOLVE for the answer. The only way to solve for the answer is by memorizing equations and PRACTICING them to find a solution. The answer is unknown to you and is not simply memorized. Not only is much more dedication and focus required to master math, but it is also an accumulative skill like the violin. You can't master calculus without first mastering basic algebra. likewise, you can't master the Tchaikovsky concerto without first mastering Suzuki. :)
