Three of the world's finest distance runners are about to attempt one of the greatest feats of athleticism in history: a sub two-hour marathon. To do it, the athletes will need to maintain an average pace of at least 13.1 miles per hour. So, we timed how long WIRED staffers could run at that speed. Needless to say, we didn't last long. Here's why only a handful of people in the world could ever come close to a two-hour marathon.

+Later Activity You are right, but what do you say when you see a fat dude running a lot slower than a sprinter? You don't tell him his running posture was bad, he had baggy clothes or bad shoes, you would just tell him to lose weight and exercise more. While there is also science behind that, it's not the same kind of analysis. In my previous reply I meant "in almost all fields, experts start applying advanced scientific analysis when evaluating the highest level of competition/profession." But honestly, I think my previous statement wasn't all that ridiculous. It was a lot cleaner than this one if you ask me.....

A lot of countries in Africa and the carribean have people who as children run around in their bare feet, building up OVER TIME the small intrinsic muscles in their feet and calves as well as other supporting structures. This obviously greatly enhances their running economy.

Nice video Thanks Interesting note on running economy. I coach cross country and coaches agree that vo2 and lactate threshold are important but have different opinions on the importance of running economy. I personally feel that a forefoot striker with a cadence of 180 steps per minute will have a lower chance of injury than a heel striker. However, it does get tricky when you go to a XC meet and see the different running forms of really fast runners. An interesting study would be to analyze runners who have run high mileage for long periods of time without injury (10 + years) and look for the common themes.

I'm interested about if running will go the ways of swimming. In the Beijing olympics many records were broken by people who usually were not usually doing so, this was due to crazy "tech suits" that were stroke specific and actually increased your buoyancy. These were later banned from future olympics due to their disruptive nature. I'm wondering if running will go the same way with fancy shoes and such.

funny you say this because one of the whole reasons nike is such a big player in this is that they created a shoe just for this event. there's another huge nike sponsored video about it; not sure how you missed it. this marathon was done in the most efficient shoe they were capable of creating. it does make a difference, but only at the top level. endurance sports aren't pay to win, but dumping money into the most expensive gear does help marginally.

Actually, we understand plenty about running efficiency and economy nowadays. And AnT (anaerobic threshold) is unlikely to be at 60% of vVo2max (Vo2max velocity) - you are talking about someone with incredibly poor cardiovascular, muscular power and form issue there. Standard, if not measured in Lab is Ant *1.1 or 1.15= vVo2max. Foot landing (heel/front foot) is important but not as important as where it lands compared to Center of mass > put landing in front means create force in opposite direction. Current technology and running power meters can help with a simple Power output to speed ratio. The higher the ratio the more efficient you are. Dividing that by mass could also provide some more data. In any case, outstanding performance for something which is -like you stated- near impossible.

with the case of footstriking that only plays a role in running economy many other things are stride length (which many pro runners have to be very long), arm movement, and the vertical tilt of the torso relative to the hips. If you go rewatch the footage of the average runners compared to the "elite" runners you will see a differnce in the smoothness of their form and overall biomechanics/running economy.

Just look at the form. all those tested who aren't marathon runners are striking extremely hard with their heel, and their head bobs up and down. with running comes better form, especially when you grow up running barefoot. better arm placement, and striking midfoot or forefoot.

cameron_a911 they very well might be. anyone can attempt a marathoner and say they're a marathoner. the point is, judging for their form and my knowledge of human biomechanics, they either don't run marathons, or are not competitive. the main point being that they are not the ones breaking records.

@albertogamez8112
@albertogamez8112 7 жыл бұрын
cameron_a911 not sure about the cut off time, that can vary. As long as you run marathons, I'd say you can be called a marathoner. whether you are competitive is different. but all anyone can do is continue to train, examine their technique, and improve.

I find it interesting that measurements for both time and distance are pretty much random concepts made by humans. There's just something so psychologically powerful about round numbers in our measurement systems; I bet this feat would have stayed unbroken if the term "marathon" meant 30 miles or if "hour" meant 70 minutes.
