you want the coldest air possible, it is more dense so in turn it combusts better. the further away from the warm engine the air is sucked in the colder it is. Because the engine bay warms up as you drive your performance would decrease if you sucked in warm air from the engine bay. that's why people install cold air intakes on their vehicles. and it's not manufacturers looking to get more money out of you, they're trying to maximize the performance of your car. just don't drive through water, you're in a car not a boat.

Jake McCoy that's why you should never take your car to a shop if you want it to still be running, and save thousands of dolors. I'm sure he didn't strip it. Probably you, or some other nut job before him tightened the bolt too tight. That bolt should only be snug, never tighten it too much. Different shops use the cheapest oil and oil filter to rob you and make you come back sooner. If you don't know how to change oil, which every person with a car should know these basics at the beginning. Always bring your own oil filter and watch them put it on to make sure they do and oil as well. Some scam shops don't even change the oil or filter so take a marker and make a mark on the filter before you take it to get it changed and see if they actually do. Hope this little trick helps out

every car ive had, had the air intake on the top just under the hood. What a huge fucking moronic design flaw! i can't believe that any car manufacturer would make such a dumb mistake as to put the intake so low to the ground. just.. WTF
@CazRaX
@CazRaX 8 жыл бұрын
+HotNoob It's a slight performance thing, let's the engine take in cold air from closer to the ground and also makes it easier to get air because of the drag and amount of air moving at that level. Makes sense on the Celica which is a sports car but not on the 300, there it was a stupid decision.

He's annoying and usually speak shit. The resonator box is located there. There is a duct going from the air filter box to the resonator box in the fender ,and from the resonator there is another duct coming up right under the bonnet ,usually near an opening near the headlight. So it works like this : Fresh air gets sucked in the duct , goes to the resonator box , then to the air filter box and then to the intake.

To add on to the other commentators, it's more efficient for the engine due to colder air being more dense. Denser air means more oxygen. More oxygen with fuel in a stroke = more power Depending on the tune of the vehicle and type and age, it varies, but there are differences between summer driving (less dense, hotter air, less oxygen per stroke) and winter driving (my personal favorite - more dense, cold air, more oxygen per stroke). Enjoying your channel, Mr. Kilmer!

its to suck in colder air which enhances combustion thus increasing a little bit in horsepower. A good way to prevent hydrolocking or blowing your engine is to install a good hydro shield which is about 20 bucks or so, and to install a AEM air bypass valve (40-50$) which eliminates almost all possibility of this happening William Ross Scotty Kilmer

The air filter in the 300C, which uses the 5.7 hemi, is near the top of the engine. I think the person was lying about how deep the water was. Yes it gets its air from the fender well but there are also air paths in front of the headlights and radiator baffle.

Thank you! I've been searching KZfaq for the better part of 30 minutes trying to find a concise video explaining the dangers of getting water in your air intake and how it can damage an engine. A lot of explanations are people talking about opinions and selling merchandise not talking about the question. Thank you very much for this quick and simple explanation.

Almost like cruise control was on sometimes, or stalling... Is the engine done at that point? If not, where would you start to fix it? Like what parts would you change first? Thanks a lot scotty

I go through water every spring when the spring floods arrive. I modified my vehicle with a water fording kit. It is not uncommon for me to be pushing peddles under water. Instead of buying things for a vehicle that most other people purchase, like a fancy stereo, DVD player, navigation system, heated seats, amplifiers, sub woofers, televisions and the such, I got tired of missing a lot of work in the spring and winter and purchased an engine snorkel, a waterproof spark computer enclosure, components to waterproof my instrument cluster, check valves for axle and transmission vents, extended vertical exhaust pipe that is removable, and a nylon vehicle interior. The region I reside is very hot in summer, very cold and with deep snow in the winter, and very flooded in spring. I just modified my vehicle to become near unstoppable. It is much uglier after the modifications, but she has never let me down and has helped many, as well as myself. I just wish it did not look like some sort of zombie apocalypse vehicle or retired military vehicle.

Thanks for the warning Scotty. Many of your videos are so informative and/or interesting, even though I only drive a Toyota, the other car types you cover are still good viewing. There's probably a reason, but I still can't help but question why the manufacturer couldn't put the intake up a little higher. Heat, space, or acoustics maybe?

We once drove our 2008 Corolla through water that was nearly door-handle deep, just for 10 seconds each way (it was a river). Nothing ever happened to the engine, and we drove it for 440,000 miles before selling it to a college student, who still drives it. Not taking my car in deep water anytime soon, but I wonder: do some brands protect their cars better than others? I would contend that Toyota does!

I learned this lesson the hard way... Drove my '02 Elantra into a shallow puddle when suddenly a pulse of water came down from the hill beside me. Although a mechanic managed to somehow make the engine run again, it started to to consume engine oil like crazy. Turned out it bent a conrod. It's a miracle that it could still run. In the end had to fully overhaul the engine and rebore because the bent rod scratched the cylinder surface.

@ConGie
@ConGie 9 жыл бұрын
professorbland In my opinion that would be a horrible idea. You could easily do it but if water is getting in the engine compartment you're likely to short out which will cause problems with the ignition system. One way or another your vehicle will stop moving. At the very least you could fit a cold air intake that sits within the engine bay and is just shrouded to prevent the heat coming off the engine from reaching the intake. Then you would only have to worry about the water's depth instead of whether or not the water will splash up in the wheel well and get sucked in. That's as good is it gets.
