Hey Laowinners!
In China, manners and the way people deal with each other is different than in the west. In China, it's good for people to be rude to each other if they know each other. It's considered rude to be polite to your friends. It's an interesting phenomenon that you should be aware of here.

Hey I was wondering if you had any videos on Chinese mythology I've looked and I couldn't find any or if you knew of a good website to look at. I write stories for my nephews and nieces as a fun way to introduce them to other cultures however all I can seem to find on chinses mythology is all clickbait or doesn't look like a very reliable source. Any help is much appreciated.

No no no, Vivi said Asia, when should just say China. China is not Asia, and people are polite to service people in many other Asian countries. That is one of the few really annoying things about your channel and ADVchina. You guys act like China is Asia. And most other Asian countries have quite a lot of cultural differences from China.

I recently started watching your videos and serpentza's videos and, personally, I like your videos more. That doesn't mean I don't like serpentza's videos too. I just enjoy hearing from you more. I also like that your wife is a part of your videos. I think you found a really nice Chinese woman! I drive a truck in the southeast of the US and so I often listen to your videos while I'm driving to kill some time. I've gotta say, though, that my view of China has changed a lot since hearing from you and serpentza. I used to want to visit, but now I'm not so sure I want to anymore. I still love certain things about the culture and I think Chinese women are beautiful. But, China just sounds like a third-world country in the way they act and treat others. It's not just infrastructure and architecture that makes a country great. It's also developing respectful and caring attitudes.

Manners and etiquette are a way to show respect. Chinese culture - like everywhere - has a series of norms and ideals that forms it view of manners and etiquette, but I think the core basis of it is different to the UK. In the UK, manners generally come from showing patience and humility. You need to show you do not consider yourself better than anyone else. The age old stereotypes on queuing is a good example of this. No matter who you are, you do not have the right to go in front of anyone else to get a service. In China, manners generally come from showing closeness and honesty. You do not need a good friend to say thank you when you help them because if you are honestly their good friend, you would want to help them. Requiring them to say thank you could imply you consider helping them an inconvenience. This is not to say the ideals around humility, patience, closeness and honesty not universal, but that where one puts the focus does impact what they would consider to be good manner.

You say Thank you to show gratitude for Help or being Served in some way, It is VERY Impolite to NOT say Thank you. If your best friend helps you move some furniture, you say Thank you, it would be so rude to not say thank you and would show they are not your best friend and you take them for granted. Its amazing how may people these days are brought up with no Etiquette.

James Campbell thank you for assuming what I do and do not say to people based on me showing awareness of another culture’s way of approaching the world. As a award, here is a thought exercise. My Chinese mother-in-law picks me up from the airport. If I say thank you to her, this will actively make her uncomfortable as it implies I do not consider her family. Which is truly polite: a) saying thank you anyway despite knowing this and how it will make her feel; or b) learn about her culture and how people express gratitude in her culture, and then show gratitude in that way. Thanks in advance for answering.

@@fat1fared Everyone is different. You don't have to jump to the conclusion that's the one and only Chinese culture out there. There's also the "Chinese culture" that you most definitely need to thank the person especially when the person says you don't need to thank him/her. I'm Chinese and I would go with A. Showing gratitude is the most basic part of being a decent human being. It should never change no matter where you go or who you live with.

Sometimes when my husband speaks to wait staff and shop workers, they seem slightly uncomfortable or confused by some of this mannerisms. We live in Zhuhai, however he studied and lived in America for 9 years in the south. Obviously, Americans will understand by saying "the south" he became accustomed to the southern hospitality. After we decided to move to zhuhai, his newly found southern hospitality followed. Since he is Chinese, some here think he is trying to get something from them or something haha. Like holding doors, asking random people how their day is and so on. Lol

Also when I was in South Korea 15 + years ago Hello Kitty was just becoming a big thing but I believe it was Korean, so maybe the Chinese adopted it or perhaps it was the other way around? I think manners are always important, but sadly in the west they seem to be becoming rarer & rarer.

I just wanna say thanks. I met a chinese girl when she came here on a student Visa and while she was obtaining her master's in accounting. I was a Serbian Orthodox Christian and she was a Chinese Communist Athiest. We fell in love and at the same time she fell in love with my faith. We got married after her baptism and chrismation and joined the Russian Church as a family. Before we got married I went and met her whole family over a two week period. At the end, her uncle one, asked why we weren't married, so I asked her dad for a blessing to get married. We've been married for 3 years now. I can't remember when I started watching your channel but I just want you to know that you've really helped our marriage. It's really helpful how you're showing us the differences and commonalities in our cultures. Before going to China I thought I knew it all being american and having experienced so many cultures here in America. Of course I was simple minded and closed off more than I thought. Now we are still growing through our diversity and you're really helping us bridge the culture gap. How can I learn more about chinese culture? My wife was telling me to study Sun Tzu but I think that's making it more complex than what it needs to be. Very informative video. Keep it up. It'd be cool to ride through China like you've done. A couple of years ago we were looking at expanding, and added a female to the mix. We were terrified of ending up in some kind of tribunal! Thank god she has two brothers, and is quite the tom-boy. If anything the banter has got worse, and it's so much fun. One of the original guys actually reaches his "acceptable" limit before our young lady, which is even funnier!

Not sure if you have already decided on one, but if so, you could give indirect, hidden clues throughout your videos (say, if it's e.g. Natalia, you could talk about Christmas out of nowhere). Well I'm from Croatia and some manners are the same. For example, when you go visit someone like friends and family, you bring gift. It's not important is ti candy box, some liker, coffee, flowers etc Most of time my mother will bring something for the man in house and women in house and if they have kids, then she brings some kids snacks. When there is big family dinner or lunch, head of family or the oldest one sits at the head of table or sometimes owner of the house, man offcourse will sit on head on table (because tradition is liberal :D). I don't know why but it is often traditional when the food is served, lady of house will put food on guest table. Fun fact, older people like my granny would always hit me if I sat on corner of the table, you know sharp one, and say don't sit there you will never get married and have children. Also when guest are leaving my mom for example will pack some food to them to bring there home, main dish and if there is some cakes she will pack it to. It's common really, that is how it's going for ages.

Please explain things saying "In China, ...". A lot of Chinese culture/customs don't apply at all in my one of other Asian countries ! Thank you ;) Hope you won't find this offensive ;) Good luck with your videos and always looking forward to watching new ones !

Very interesting. But here's another take on this. My Thai wife worked for almost 10 years in a supermarket deli in NY and she constantly complained to me about how rude the customers were, compared to her native Thailand. She said if Thai customers ever spoke to a vendor in a market like her customers speak to her, they would get something thrown at them by the vendor. Thailand is not China but that's how it is there.

I think it might be Asia in general because cutting in line seems to be par for the course in Southeast Asian countries too. You have to be aggressive in order to get what you want. Growing up in the USA, everyone is taught to say "thank you" for basically everything given to them. I think this applies in Asia. Maybe it is the introverted nature of Asians vs the extroverted nature of Westerners. Being expressive of gratitude is expected in the West while being too open about any kind of feelings is shunned in Asia.

My thoughts... The pre-Communist Chinese elite were sophisticated, refined, cultured and had polite manners and the proletariate/peasant were rough, loud and direct. The Communists, especially in the Cultural Revolution, crushed the elites and raised up the proletariate/peasants. It was actually dangerous to show refined/cultured manners. That is partly why, in general, Taiwanese are more polite than mainland Chinese... Even the communists renaming the national language to 普通话 / putonghua / common language was lowering the concept of the "Mandarin" of the elites, to the ordinary commoner's rough language. I noticed Viv say "Asian" in a couple vids (including here) when I think she should have said "Chinese" because Asia has many unique cultures that differ. And when it comes to small-talk... Yah, Americans are good, Brits a bit less, but the most charming small-talkers are the Irish! They are so friendly... I had an Irish guy tell me that the absolute worst job for an Irishman is to try to be a "spy" because everyone wants to know your business and everyone is interconnected so you can't fool anyone for long. LOL

The rudeness of the mainland Han does not apply to other Asians. The proof is that even the Thais are offended by the mainland Chinese and have banned them from certain tourist spots and guest hotels. The whole attitude with language is also different. The traditional Thais from good families (regardless of income or education) always used the particles "ka" (female) and "krup" (male) to end their sentences, even to servers, as an automatic indicator of politeness and respect. I heard it used with all classes of workers a million times, even with taxi drivers who are not in the category that people would assume command much politeness. It was always used with waitresses and waiters.

For me it goes into catagories: Strangers Friends Close friends & Family Depending on the environment whether it's a casual environment or not, I'd most likely always say Please and thank you, For friends, it's a bit flexible, still keeping the thank you and probably dropping the please depending on how well we vibing, Close friends and family? Nah. I feel it'd actually be ruder if I said thank you and please. It's like I'm treating them as strangers. so gotta keep the environment flexible and friendly without being formal. It's like we already know we'd be thankful and grateful for the things close friends & family do, so there isn't any need for me to awkwardly say thank you or please. and that's all just me

Manners are use as a level of varying respect, eg not to an elder nor important but to close friends; p & q are place aside mainly because it create an impression of closeness where we can impose on each other without the business front when you outside this “inner circle” concept, take it as a complement with friends or be alert when with strangers. On service staffs, it is not really consider rude in China or Asia if you just get to the point and order without the “please could you”, it is actually consideration to the service staff in a busy environment to get things going without the additional blather, just skip the intro main and go straight to the summary. However saying thank you at the end of the day does make someone’s day, which a lot of people do skip, should be encouraged.

Being rude is not rare in China that's true, and between close friends and relatives we are not always say please & thank you,but we always show our gratitude and appreciation just not literally, some subculture do swear to each other show closeness. What I find offensive is that you think all Chinese are rude to service staff, and think someone who work at service industry are somehow inferior. It‘s very common seeing someone act that way,but it's definitely not because of the culture. Most Chinese don't have the privilege get good education, many don't even get the most basic education, famine and persecution older generation going through also don’t help, and it may have bad influences when they raising child. It’s just hunger and persecution when they gone something gonna stay with you. My parents always think it's wired that I say thank you every time I‘ve been served, they are kind, but they think doing their jobs are not something you need to say thanks unless it's really good. Be polite is not unusual in China, many are really uncivilized, but you also can meet many well-mannered Chinese,it's just something China need to keeping working on. I don't know where your wife get the ideal, one of the benefit of socialism is that many Chinese do believe all peoples are equal, and they demand it. It's just most of us don't know the truths.

Living in vancouver canada most of my life and many chinese here, here, not china but here, they are mostly rude. Even the kids born and raised here do the same. Not as much but still. They are pushy and insensitive and oh so materialistic. While im talking to a chinese service and another chinese comes up and interrupts, they are not told to wait, they ignore me instead and i have to wait, if i wait. I often dont bother anymore with chinese stores cuz of that. Seems the older they get the more rude and arrogant they get. And when asked of this, they always say ‘but when in china,,,,,’ but you aint in china,,,,,,,,,,, and every chinese girl that has ever shown interest or me in her, the next question is,,,,,, how much money do you make? Then; What is your job? Where do you live? How big is your house? How much did you pay for it? They always say it nicely, until they think its not enuf then they are jerks, rude arrogant jerks. And trying to get the truth of them. Even my chinese friends of many years, always fake excuses instead of just saying the truth

Okay so this was really helpful because I'm extremely polite like Japanese people but I work for Chinese people and they eat me alive. I try so hard to be polite, but this video makes sense because if I say something like"please pass me the ketchup" they get mad. When I get frustrated and give more of "give me the g d ketchup" attitude they find it a lot more respectable. This is all really confusing to me because I'm just trying to be nice. I'm American but as polite as a Japanese person even Americans eat me alive, they will take advantage of that too. Everyone thinks I'm timid but really I'm trying to show respect. I'm not shy at all but it seems so.
