Ta-Nehisi Coates, author of "The Water Dancer," Oprah's first book selection for her Apple TV+ series, "Oprah's Book Club," explains why it's important for black people to visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Virginia, and shares how the plantation sheds light on the enslaved families that built it. Visited there in 1976 . While standing in the slave quartets,I tried to to imagine what it was like for the slaves, I couldn't. I felt a haunting and sad feeling.

I finally found it, only because I was searching for more information about the descendants of President Thomas Jefferson of the United States. One day, I will visit that plantation to see it for myself. In the meantime, I am at the OWN itself, I have heard so much about. It is the closest I can be to the legend herself, isn't it?

0:46 Why should you or any black person living in America and being a descendant of slaves be afraid or hate to speak the truth while being proud? If we Americans get to have Pride month then we SHOULD most definitely be expressive about the TRUTHS of black ancestors literally building this country with their bear, bleeding hands. There should be pride for accomplishment a plethora of things while facing almost unbearable dehumanization and enslavement.

The plantation is in the Piedmont region of the eastern US. Named after the region of Italy. Both regions are plateaus at the foot of a mountain range. P.s. do they gave Google where you live?
