What is a dumb phone and is it worth giving it ago. In this video I'll share what it's actually like to use one exclusively with no smartphone for 3 months. This is everything you need to know before buying one or turning your smartphone into a dumb phone.
After realizing there is more to life than just settling with what you’ve got and what is expected of you, I’m determined to help others in their 20s realize their own true potential and live a more passion-fuelled life by taking back control.
I’m going, to be honest with you I’m 27 years old, and achievement wise I don’t really have anything to show for myself, I entered the real world after college with no skills and no idea. I quickly discovered after bouncing from 1 minimum wage job to another that something is wrong.
Is this really what my life is going to be like?
But after seeing my wife quit Uni to pursue KZfaq and start her own business, I saw that life wasn’t just about settling with what you’ve got but it's actually possible to create your own path.
After seeing what is possible of someone close to me, I’m determined to experience, learn and share to help others in their 20s realize their own true potential, take control and live a life to be proud of.

I don’t understand why it’s seen as embarrassing for someone to pull out their “dumb phone” honestly. If they’re around my age or younger, I look at that and think “Wow. Going against the system. Pretty cool.”

Personally, I have never found a reason to buy a smartphone. Why? I have the internet on my computer and why should I pay for having it on a mobile phone with an unpractical, small display? Why is it for? Leaving aside that I would have to charge it every day like an idiot. (Only because of this reason, buying a smartphone would be like a journey to prehistoric times for me.) People buy it mainly to show off in front of others and because they have no deeper interests to fill their lives with. I just bought Nokia 2660 and it seems to be the best purchase of my life. It has everything I need (even the internet, which I can use in emergency situations, for example when I need to know the departure times of trains and buses) and the battery lasts about 20 days. It has a low-quality camera but I don't need it anyway because I have a Sony camera with 20x zoom.

I've been using an old Nokia 2720-a as my daily driver for about a year and it has honestly improved my attention span and productivity wildly. You can still undo boredom with a quick snake round (my highscore is 528 beat if you can) and it has 10 mb of memory which means i can fit a song in there and it has built-in radio it's great! Only issue i've had is that "society" expects you to have a smartphone by now and in school for example they wanted us to install an app to do an activity and I had to explain to the teacher that I was using a 2009 nugget

While I applaud those who are able to live in the modern app-centric world without a smartphone, I think a smarter and more realistic solution would be to remove social media, streaming, games and other non-essential apps and turn off notifications for all remaining apps except phone and your default messaging app. This is what I've done and it's been amazing. I only get notified for phone calls and messages. Not even email. My iPhone is now a tool and no longer an entertainment device. If I need directions, I've got a maps app. If I need to access my money, I've got a banking app. If I want to watch a video, play a game or check my socials, I'll need my iPad. My iPhone doesn't do that anymore.

Hmm--I wonder has Apple or Google considered adding a setting in iOS and Android so the phone works more or less like a feature phone except for one app for messaging. As someone who didn't have a smartphone until 3G shutdown forced my hand in the end of 2021 (and who switched to a smart phone with a flip phone factor a few days later), hearing a person talk about how phones are vital to banking and what do if you're bored without a smartphone is just so *wild* to me. I suppose it's hard to miss what you don't have. As for the embarrassment of having a flip phone in public - I had my old flip phone so long that it sort of went from an outdated relic to a novelty. And, of course, my current flip phone is definitely a novelty. Seeing people's eyes go wide when I show them that I have Instagram and Spotify on a flip phone is still fun. So is watching people watching me tweet via a T9 keypad.

This is why you *MUST* get a "dumb" phone that supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE). With many carriers turning off CDMA and GSM in favor of going all LTE, many older "dumb" phones may not work anymore on the cellphone network you use.

There's no such thing as the embarrassment of using a classic phone in public. Using it doesn't matter! What matters is how confident you are about it! If you carry a classic phone with confidence and you don't care about how the rest are looking at you, some might grow an admiration for this and get curious about your lifestyle.
@DarbyWilcock
@DarbyWilcock Жыл бұрын
Yes that could happen but the fact is we do get embarrassed about a lot of things, especially depending on your culture. The reason why people are switching to classic phones is not because they look cool and want to be seen with them. Most people don’t want to stand out and get funny looks from people because they are not confident people.

Something important to remember is that it doesn't have to be one way or the other, as you can use a smartphone and not also 'be used by it'; you can have a thought and not have it affect you, or think a thought and not feel the need to act on it, or have the ability to do something but not feel that you must do it; this is called mindfulness. We can have this amazing and useful technology, and at the same time have it not be to our detriment that we use it. Using a dumbphone is probably the best way to get to the point where using a smartphone will no longer be to your detriment.
@DarbyWilcock
@DarbyWilcock Жыл бұрын
You are completely right but mindfulness is a difficult practice that takes a lot of determination and patience what unfortunately is hard to come by and a lot of what we do on our phones conditions us to make us less mindful. Mindfulness is something I’m trying to incorporate more to my life. 👍🏻

There have been reports of kids harming themselves because they didn't get "likes" and attention. Whenever i see videos like this it confirms my decision to never get a smartphone, some people are amazed and confused about how i live without one. Due to my work specifics, I mostly need to have a smartphone, but I have never abandoned dumbphones and have a SIM specifically just for talking. Moreover, I have another SIM in a card-shaped mini phone in my wallet serving purely as a backup, it has a hardware killswitch so I don't worry about the battery self-discharging and getting damaged over time when not in use. Regarding the "internet" SIM, I think my dumbest decision was to migrate to eSIM. It heavily limited the amount of devices I can use that number on, and of course ruled out all dumbphones currently in existence. So, this weekend I'm migrating that number too back to a physical SIM. Time to regain the freedom of choice.

Great that you found what we have known as our lives. I am 62 years of age and grew up without computers, without portable telephones. I have known black-and-white television, yeah, TV was around. Radio was mid-wavelength and USW. We had musicassettes and 8-mm. film wind-up movie cameras. When I jobbed for some money as a cashier at a little supermarket I had every price in my head. I knew the phone numbers of dozens of people by heart. To call someone I dropped coins into a booth phone where there were also printed directories. My first cellphone I bought in 2008, a Nokia 1208. I should love to still be able to use it but as much as I know these models can’t be upgraded to 4G or 5G. I’m a mechanic and repair mechanical things. That’s satisfying. I pity the fools who fear that the end is nigh should their smartphone quit functioning. What a poor world is this? I find it wonderful that you got to this point.

I do the following to be on my phone less: In all situations where I'm usually bored without my phone, I pull out a cheap 7 inch tablet that I bought which has no internet connection and no useful apps except a PDF reader and loads of technical books. No fiction or such, just "Learn C++ in 6 weeks" or "Linux Kernel Programming", etc and I read one of those. Always makes me feel good afterwards because I feel like I was productive (and didn't trigger my social anxiety by just looking around on the train or bus and thinking to myself that everybody else surely thinks I'm weird because I don't look at a screen.).^^

This is a great video and it really did make me think! I quit social media a few years back and it made me feel "free", but I started using it again for business reasons and now I'm using it way too often! I keep telling myself I need to have my phone to be able to check email/social media etc for my business or I watch KZfaq/Netflix etc in the background on the phone when I'm doing other things like cleaning and all of those things are not necessary and add extra noise to my life... but I also read ebooks on the Kindle app or listen to audiobooks through Audible and podcasts/music through Spotify when driving/working out - so my question is, what do you do when you're driving/working out? Do you still listen to podcasts/music somehow? I'm considering "dumbing down my smartphone" instead, by removing all social media/KZfaq/Netflix but keeping the educational apps like Kindle, Spotify, and Audible - but then I will always have the distraction/option of downloading everything again at the touch of a button Now that I'm typing this out, I definitely realise that I have an addiction to my phone haha
@DarbyWilcock
@DarbyWilcock Жыл бұрын
Haha 😂. It's funny when we type things out we realise things about ourselves. It's definitely worth asking yourself "do I need social media on my phone for business or can I just use it on the laptop etc." Smartphones are hugely convenient so we always have a ton of excuses ready if we do ever think about quitting. I've gone back to using the radio and cds in the car, don't get me wrong I would love to listen to audiobooks or podcasts and I occasionally ask my wife to borrow her phone for drives and runs but most of the time I have nothing. You can just download everything again but I still do think dumbing down our smartphones is the best and first step all of us can take to get the benefits I talk about in this video. Thanks for watching Kirsty.

@Kirsty Rebecca Fine Art regarding music, podcasts, audiobooks, KZfaq, etc, I think the big thing is how you use them. You could just turn on a radio or play a CD, but if that isn't in any practical way different to how you listen to your phone, it doesn't matter. If you are constantly skipping tracks, searching for next video, or otherwise constantly actively interacting with your phone, you might look for more restrictive device for the job. There is a reason analog music is also getting a resurgence. Talked to someone who was passionate about music and spend hours listening to it, but skipped 80% of the songs after second chorus.

It's so nice to go outside and just look at the dumbphone to see the time or use it to listen to music. When I have to wait for someone, I bring a music player and I start listening to music. And my player is very small, it uses a mini memory card. I'm glad that you no longer use your smartphone because you will get more out of your life in real time and outside.

There are a few important action people have to do. One. Remove their social media accounts. Two. Delete the apps on your phone. (Because social media is a killer. Also on webbrowser or other devices. So…unsubscribe first!) Overall a smartphone with just tool apps like navigation and banking is a incredibly handy device. It are the extra apps that make it addictive. Go outside. Into the sunlight. Breathe. Talk to people. Connect. Enjoy.

I just love that the young 'uns are falling in love with dumbphones. I spent half my life without any kind of cell phone and when I finally did get one, it was a barebones Nokia 5120 that couldn't even send texts. Could receive them, just not send and I used to pay for a carrier add-on that would text me the weather report every morning 😅I remember those mall kiosks that sold a bunch of different snap covers for Nokias, some even sold LED mods so you could change out your pea-green backlight to pink or blue. When I upgraded to a Nokia 3390, I had a flashing keypad mod that would trigger whenever I got a text or call. After that I had a Nokia 5125 with pink backlighting and a blue flashing Hello Kitty antenna. Those were the days lol. Smartphones weren't even a thing until I was in my mid-20s, I think going so long only having a PHONE phone kind of set my usage habits in stone so I don't really struggle with smartphone addiction. I have an iPhone 14 pro but I still prefer my computer for videos and I don't use any social media. I admit I'm extremely addicted to podcasts but that, the notes app, and always having a good camera on me are really the only things that keep me on a smartphone. But omg I'd sooooo ditch my iPhone in a nanosecond for a pink RAZR though. That was THE coolest phone ever, I'd be totally happy to lug around a notebook, camera, iPod, etc again if I could have a working pink RAZR.

Haha that’s funny. I would love to see everyone carry a backpack full of stuff that we now all have on our phones as convenient apps (music, notes, camera etc) that would be funny. I agree it’s nice to see people are interested in these things and it’s really surprised me 😊

I was born in the 80s , and I have to say life was so much better before smartphones . I remember getting my first phone back in 1999, and have watched it all evolve and had numerous phones , I too would love a pink Motorola RAZR phone again, also the smaller thinner Motorola krzr was also a great phone. I wish more than anything that today's limited amount of dumbphones were built to the same quality as they were many years ago

I'm not addicted to my Moto G Power (2121 version), though I can't say the same about my PC and tablet. I did want a feature phone to use while using my e-bike as the Moto is a bit too long for most of my pant pockets. I can't find one that will run Google Maps fully. My 2 favorite weather apps probably would be ok. I am leaning towards the Unihertz Jelly Star. It is very pocket friendly, though has way more features than I really need and a bit more spendy then I was hoping to find. I just need to be able to run those 3 apps and have WiFi to check store ads in case I forgotten an item or two.

the only issue i had with using my old blackberry (basically a dumbphone now) is the lack of uber :( since I'm a student and don't have a car, having the app is basically a necessity for my transport. So the best way for me was literally delete every app on my iPhone except Uber and Google Maps and banking.

It is not the smartphone that is the problem but what apps you install on it. I remember the days when we only had landlines or GSM's for calling and texting. In general I was better off: but an app for parking, the banking app, etcetera. Sometimes I need to install something on my phone to connect to the broker's website where I buy and sell shares and options. I hate my phone spying on me.

Rather than be thinking about boredom think about creativity as a motivator. I sometimes forget I have a phone and have forgotten to take it with me, it is amazing how little it rings and not a problem with texting. I now only rely on my laptop. We need to get people off of "smart" phones as they are not making people smart. How many hours are wasted when people are supposed to be working and clients are paying for a service when most of the time, I see people distracted by a large screen. My kids don't have a smart phone only a basic one to call when to collect from school and they are much happier and doing well socially and in school without them. I am flying alot and this gives me time to read and I use it as time for a break from my desk and computer but how many others around me are stuck to screens when travelling.

I’ve found that the IPhone SE 3 is a good choice for those needing to stay connected but not be a smart phone prisoner. You get a decent camera, access to the Apple ecosystem system including FaceTime and can install any app that’s needed. It’s small and light so easy to carry. It’s got 5G so I can create a hotspot if I need to. What I don’t get is a beautiful big screen that makes it easy to spend hours on my phone. I make it a point just not to install social media apps on my phone and that works for me. Generally my phone spends most of the day in my pocket or on my desk.

I have an iPhone 5 which today is almost a dumb phone since it can't run the latest apps. It can still do iMessage and take pictures, oh an music. Many people have tablets now. Do I really need a tablet AND an iPhone? A tablet is just going to sit there until you log into a wi-fi hotspot so I can catch up on spam when I'm at a hotel or metro station. If manufacturers start making feature phones that look modern, stylish and with a modest set of tools like a camera and maybe a basic browser for QR code scanning, I think people would buy it. Smartphone users would buy it for a backup or for their kids first phone.

Seems a good option if you a kid or teenager and don't work. My work routine requires a smartphone, I also make bank transactions on the go with my phone in a daily basis. If your contry uses SMS instead of Telegram/Whatsapp/LINE this can be a solution. If you need it for communication basically to work you have to chose your job or the phone. This change is not to everyone.
