Why Japan's Great Pyramid of Giza Can't be Built Until 2110
London. October, 1992. A Japanese man entered a government building near Chancery Lane, and made his way up to an office on the first floor. This was the London branch of the UK’s Patent Office. You see, this man was there on behalf of Japan’s renowned Shimizu Corporation - a leading architectural and engineering firm that was (and is) among the top in the world, and he was there to apply for a patent. To secure their ideas globally it was necessary to apply not just in Japan.
Now this particular patent was for no ordinary idea. It was for something grand, something spectacular. The idea was to build giant pyramids in the middle of some of the largest and busiest urban centers in the world - starting with Tokyo. These infrastructures would be so large, they could house entire cities. But why? What was this for? And who exactly is the Shimizu Corporation?
To understand this, we need to go back in time, back over 200 years ago to the company’s inception...
Talking Points:
- Shimizu Megacity Pyramid TRY-2004
- Megastructures
- Pyramidal structures
- Japanese architectural & engineering companies
- Kisuke Shimizu
- Edo period
- Japan's population decline
- Tokyo's overpopulation & overcrowding
- Large scale construction projects
- Floating cities, underwater cities, space hotels
- Blade Runner (Tyrell Corporation headquarters pyramid)
- Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza
- Burj Khalifa & Jeddah Tower
- 2 kilometer high building
- Tokyo Bay
- Megatrusses & suspended skyscrapers
- Renewable energy of solar, wind, algae & waves
- Japanese earthquakes & tsunamis
- Pacific Ring of Fire
- X-Seed 4000 (Taisei Corporation)
- Mega-City Pyramids in Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Delhi & Dhaka
- Largest man-made structure in history
- Hong Kong's Kowloon Walled City

🇯🇵 Could you live in a megacity pyramid? ⭐ Get Nebula now: go.nebula.tv/kentobento (includes my Nebula Exclusive shows) ✍🏽 Correction: Before 1868 the capital was Kyoto, not Edo (though Edo was what Tokyo was called back then). Also forgot to include that a major reason Egypt's Giza pyramid is mentioned in the video as a point of comparison is because the Shimizu pyramid is meant to have the exact same (relative) dimensional proportions.

I'm sure people looked at the first skyscrapers as impossible and dangerous as well, I mean what would you think of an incredibly tall building unlike anything done before, if I was around when skyscrapers were first being built I'm sure I'd have been doubting its possibility, how could such massive buildings be safe, how could they not easily topple over. This mega pyramid is unlike anything done before, so of course it's going to seem scary to people. The design may change, but not doubt a mega building like this will be built eventually.

I'm doubtful if it's ever going to become reality. Cost of real estate under this would be horrendous, especially in Tokyo. It would need new materials technology in enormous quantities. And then there's the big one - if you have one place in a country where everyone wants to live, you ain't going to make more space there. You need to make other places interesting. You can build five of these, and after some time everything is again just as packed, but you have made a huge logistics nightmare to boot. Look at Kowloon, or any big south east Asian city and their slums. If there is a square meter, some hopeful will live there. Japan needs to make other areas more interesting to level out population all over the country.

I think it would make a lot of sense to build a much smaller prototype of this somewhere large and empty, like the Mojave desert. Scale it down to reduce some of the stresses and you could probably get away with building the superstructure out of a combination of titanium and aircraft grade aluminum. Scaling it down also makes it more managable. Say, instead of building it for a million people, build it for a thousand. Moreover, build it primarily as a research facility for the development of construction materials and renewable energy initiatives. If it can be built, the research done within the facility can not only benefit the world, but can help pay for the structure.

I think thats why they proposed that the top is designated to Technological spaces and leisure spaces. Makes sense because naturally ppl who are on top will feel they have power, and the Japanese are very conscious of small things like that.

Perhaps Tokyo-3 is crazier than this, you need to dig underground chamber as big as the city above it.

This would probably need active support, as I'm not sure carbon nanotubes would meet the required strength although I'd love to see a breakdown of the design with that in mind (assuming we could even make those to standard). Cool video. Thanks!

Carpentry was a far more generalized profession back then, and is to a lesser extent today. One has to do both mental and physical tasks quickly and effectively, think nonlinearly on their toes, and play politics to herd people in the direction of a solution. In Edo Japan in particular, the political skills had to be sharp to navigate both the incredibly intricate face culture and the extremes of the resource situation - their iron was scarce and of low quality, so they had to get really creative and really driven and determined to finish anything large scale. Given the clan system was at least respectful of meritocratic vertical mobility and its structure easily superimposing itself over the corporate model, giving us kieretsu/chaebols with the old clan names, most of the largest nexuses in the SEA geopolitical economy were seeded by carpenters. To answer the connotation in your question of how large things tend to start with the most overlooked, lowest class people, the humble lowborn positions have since the dawn of time been neglected and looked down on despite their carrying the whole of civilization and having to be smart, adaptible, patient in the face of those who do not see and do not care, and incredibly hard working. Sanitation is one of the only reasons large-scale civilization is possible, but sanitation workers are some of the most abused, looked down on, and (with the exception of unionized municipal sanitation workers in large metropolitan areas) worst paid people on earth. Same with carpenters, same with care workers. and so on, and so on.
