Seeing your Calves, I believe you are over the hump on them not making it. They look good. I milk 90 cows in NY. Our Holsteins run a 3.8% butterfat. Our one Ayrshire has a 4.8% butterfat. Our two Jerseys have a 5.4% butterfat. We love them all! Jerseys are SOOOO SWEET. Ayrshire is sweet up front but horrible to milk. Love the fact your children looked up facts! Pratt family needs a family Jersey cow to milk!?? God Bless you All!

A note on Jersey bulls. Granted, left to their own devices out in the pasture off by themselves with no real close contact to humans , jersey bulls have a tendency to get defensive and will have a tendency to act more unary then bulls of other breeds. The trick is to make close contact with them as young as possible. Handle them. Pet them. Talk to them and give them special treats and u will raise a very manageable, docile animal. Do this on a frequent basis. At least once a day if not more and they will look forward to your visits and u approaching them. Get in their pen/stall/enclosure with them from birth for the above activity. Dont do it if u r upset/angry/out of sorts they will pick up on it and even grow to dislike u. If u r this type of person its best u r not around animals in general anyway.

They look good. When we got our jersey bull calves we paid $20/calf. They were at least a couple of weeks old. That farmer didn’t make any money on them. Another fact jerseys do take longer to get to market weight vs an angus. Just wait until they can go outside and run. They will love it. Thanks for sharing. Take care, see ya :)

I can't wait to get them into a permanent pen outside. Well, permanent until we put them on pasture :)

Had 2 breeders when I was a lady, started with Holstein but went to jersies ( forgive my spelling) and had a higher yeild. Good money maker for dairy cows

Interesting! Growing up, we purchased the Holstein calves from the local dairy farms to raise for steers. My dad wouldn't touch anything with Jersey in it though. He was one of those people who had a negative opinion of the meat. I've never had Jersey beef myself. I'll be interested in hearing how you like the full Jersey beef. WIth everything going on, we are so thankful (now) that they didn't have room for Charlotte's steer at the fair. Now, I keep having the thought I should be buying a bull calf or two . . . . then I lay down for 20 minutes. Ha!

We have got 1/2 a jersey the last 2 or 3 years from a local farmer and have had no problem with it. It's beef :) I hope we raise these right with similar results!! And I agree, with everything going on, I am so grateful not only to have a full pantry, full freezer, but also so much meat on hoof/leg :)

You kids and your homework 💥👍. Nicely done1😘. My favorite flavor of beef is Jersey Guernsey mix. Milk is Jersey Holstein mix. If yall can find a brewery that you can pick up the spent grain it adds a flavor to the meat and marbling💥. Cuteness overload.

I like the price aspect, but advantages to jersey is the possibility to have A2 milk. They have more worth if you have a bull that is A2A2 and cow with the same genetics. Justin Rhoads has bull that does not seem very aggressive, but seems crazy when the cows are in heat. Raising them from a bottle would help with know the bull and when he is being aggressive. I think jersey are a good pick.

Jerseys have the best temperament!! Big issue with the calves is scours. They stress really easy. We had a big issue our first inexperienced year and lost a couple. After that we had lots of scour medicine. I dont know if it's worse in certain areas but we deal with it every year. The key is the medication and keeping them hydrated. It can sneak up on you too. Lol things were fine for a week or 2 and then boom. Lol. Good luck they are a lot of fun and tasty.

@brucealvarez9263

I don't see why a farmer would lose money selling a bull calf, at least not as a bottle baby like you got. I guess it is possible if they feed it up to a few months of age before selling.

Yes. We just have them separated here for a little bit on recommendation from our vet. Just a pit of a quarantine. I do wish we had more of an outdoor area for these couple weeks, but also, I like them being in the garage out of the weather and wind. Only another week or so!!!
