K-On! is a Japanese four-panel comic strip seinen manga written and illustrated by Kakifly. The manga was serialized in Houbunsha's manga magazine Manga Time Kirara between the May 2007 and October 2010 issues. It was also serialized in Houbunsha's magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat. The manga relaunched from April 2011 to June 2012 with two separate storylines published in Manga Time Kirara and Manga Time Kirara Carat. The manga is licensed in North America by Yen Press. A spin-off manga about a different band of high school girls, K-On! Shuffle, began serialization in July 2018.
A 13-episode anime adaptation produced by Kyoto Animation aired in Japan between April and June 2009. An additional original video animation (OVA) episode was released in January 2010. A 26-episode second season, titled K-On!! (with two exclamation marks), aired in Japan between April and September 2010, with an OVA episode released in March 2011. An animated film based on the series was released in Japan on December 3, 2011. Bandai Entertainment had licensed the first season until their closure in 2012. Sentai Filmworks has since re-licensed the first season, in addition to acquiring the rights to the second season and film. The title of the series comes from the Japanese word keiongaku, which means popular music. K-On! has achieved strong sales in Japan, and by 2011 gross revenues had reached over ¥15 billion.

I just watched it for the first time a few months ago and fell in love. I just rewatched the movie today and I felt right at home and loved every moment. This show really is something special, a true gem. I am thankful for Kyoto Animation for bringing such amazing works into the world. I love this and Dragon Maid, and I really am interested in everything else they've done. I'll watch it all at some point.

First episode of season one: Yui rushes to get to schol, slips at the bottom of the stairs, falls on her butt. Me: what a silly klutz. Last episode of season: Yui rushes to get to her friends on stage, slips at the bottom of the stairs, plants her foot solid and runs. Me: This is the triumph of the existence of the human soul in all its glory!

I hate to say it like this, but K-On! made me cry insanely hard more so than any other anime I've seen, including Violet Evergarden. Like.. this anime hits HARD in every way, even though it's just slice of life without conflict most of the time?

I’m a musician and I watched this entire show and the movie. When they got to the airport and checked in their instruments my heart sank in a moment because I believed the guitars would have been shattered. And then nothing happened because K-on! is so pure that it will never harm you. I love this anime!

so glad someone enjoyed something I did 10 years ago, I know alot of good anime's from 2000 to 2012 if you want to watch some more anime. I mainly just read and watch anime/manga from that time was because I like older ones at a much simpler time and little to no fan service and a focus on a story, or not a fast paced pile that we never really remember

This is a lovely video, K-ON is actually one of my top Favorite anime along with Madoka Magica. Mugi and Azusa are my favorite characters and the anime itself is pretty Underrated. I just love anime that it deals with friendship, heartwarming, sisterhood moments.

@@KazeTalks yup. Its really heartwarming. And the first scene that comes to my mind when i hear "heartwarming sisterhood moments" is the christmas flashback where we see Yui and Ui when they were little. Ui wishing for a white christmas and Yui puts the next day cotton out of a cushion on a tree outside and tells her sister that it was snow just so Ui would be happy. Even though she immediately found out that it's not really snow...the scene is really heartwarming and I've never seen such a cute act between siblings before.

I watched the show purely out of curiosity. It wasn't my first anime (more like 4th, I think?), but it was *the* first one that made me search for more amazing anime shows. It happened in S2Ep4, where they had a pillow fight on a trip and went to sleep afterwards. Ritsu started goofing off and made everyone laugh. That's when I caught myself laughing along with a wide smile, and that's when a thought flashed in my head: 'Holy shit, watching this show *does* make me happy'. And it also filled me with a sense of purity, unlike anything else. It was a fantastic experience which I revisit regularly. Also, support the 'K-on! Shuffle' spin-off manga.

This show has a lot of depth covered by it's simplistic design. Not to mention how 5000 things are happening in the background for every scene giving it unlimited rewatch value.

As a guy whether or not you cry on K ONs ending its fine. But the guy who told all this was really accurate and just makes me remember of azusa being alone without the other 4. And crying somehow The literal anime ending really hit me so hard even as a guy that just watches anime. I couldn't just think but cry about the show.

I came across this anime because my friend recommended I watched it because it had music in it. So I checked it out, not sure what to expect, but the characters and their personalities are what kept me hooked. It was definitely one of my favorite animes and I feel like I could relate to it a lot. None of the episodes felt unnecessary, every one felt unique and important to the story which I liked. Awesome video, I enjoyed the whole thing 😁

This is exactly why I rage when people lewd these K-On! girls. Why? because seeing lewd and nothing makes me think that they watched the series for no other reasons but to make fun of the characters. I appreciate Naoko Yamada's story in making me relate on her stories just like bands. I am in a band but mostly burried in sorrow and loneliness because most of it tells me that I don't fit here. and from that perspective, K-On! showed me something else. Doing nothing isn't a waste of time, not only you're the only human alone like me, it makes me want to interact and do something I've never done. Though, I've never had a real friendship like these K-ON! girls do, it makes me want to make my life more reasonable and contented. Doing nothing and Doing something works together, by that, I mean doing nothing listens and goes something beyond that can inspire you and that's when Doing something comes. Doing something means sharing and spreading your inspiration and happiness all around you. It's be a waste if you'll keep it to yourself, it'd be a perfect chance to have something that makes you happy. Why do I love K-On!? Not just because of the characters and music, also the story and quotes that can inspire many lonely people, like me. I spend too much time searching up some other things and making friends that wouldn't last, I don't want that. Life isn't like an anime but way beyond what seemed like you wished deep within. You can make and create your own memories through happiness and curiosity, even if others wouldn't respect that. What matters is you made your own life choice, not just for other people but yourself. Remember the motto for life? "Life's purpose is making memories." and that's what K-On! is all about. It also inspires me to play in a band full of friendlies and people like the characters. Before the series, it always makes me think that I stand out so thankfully, K-On/Kyoani makes me feel appreciated and related as well as other people who feel the same. By now, why am I still here? Hah. Making more memories, yeah? Within this pandemic, I'm still looking forward to people making memories and enjoy life as it should. I overly wish it would happen.

I'm a pretty edgy guy that loves dark and violent things (like Black Lagoon and Berserk), but there's just something about K-ON that makes me love it so much. It always puts a smile on my face every time I have a bad day, plus it's one of the several things that helped me through a depressing part of my life.

Great video. Made me cry at quite a few points. It was truly amazing how Yamada was able to put all of this together in a way that made you just feel so comfortable... and then at the end punch you so hard in the gut. "Tenshi ni Fureta yo" is still one of my favorite anime songs ever, and it's because of the bond that was forged between these girls. Thank you for making this!

I owe this anime nearly everything I do for fun now. I watched it and then decided to learn electric guitar. I am now in a small band with my closest friends. I always loved music that was more on a rock-type spectrum (although I usually prefer the harder stuff i.e. AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, etc.) but, to me, the music in the show that the band played had the same high energy type of stuff that I found in AC/DC somehow mixed with the vibe that bands like Semisonic or Everclear or Dookie-Era Green Day gave off. I love this show and it did so much for me, I owe it everything.

I've just finished K-on after watching your review a month ago and man it was perfect, At first I was just looking for an anime about bands and from what I see from the 1st season it's good, but didn't really like it that much, but after finishing season2 and the movie, I just blew my mind that it makes me cry a few times. easilly one of my favorites. this anime just suits my current situation of being in a band with my schoolmates and being a graduating student, man it's such a good anime. and the instruments are also based in real instruments and the position of the fingers like doing an E chord is so accurate. Can't believe that it took me 10 years to watch this but I guess that this is the perfect time to watch it.

I just finished K-On and thank you for this video, it made me realize more why this anime became my favorite. Everything you said at the last part about how K-On reflects our highschool life that felt like forever but when it's ending it hits you like a truck is pure gold to me. I must have watched the whole of K-On a dozen times by now, and every time I came away with something new. Also, I have read and watched lots of analysis, some of it really great, and that too gives you food for thought every time. That's when you know something is a classic. I loved this video. "Wholesome" is the word I've always felt described K-On best. Your comments on Azusa were especially good, with excellent details like her handing Yui a schedule. The idea that the whole show can be seen as a statement on the work culture is on point too. "The wasteful period of life", as Ritsu puts it. I wish you would write a longer piece taking some more time with each character, including the secondary ones. Do keep it up please. Congratulations!

Fantastic video! I really really love how you draw so many comparisons, especially the bit talking about comedy. I just finished watching the series last week. This show has brought a smile to my face every time I watch it and honestly has become my #1 favorite anime now. The music is amazing, the comedy was always so funny, and it was just so wholesome and it made me happy whenever I was feeling depressed. I'm very thankful to have discovered this show.

I watched K-ON a few days ago for the first time. And it's just like you said, the show is showing you the time that passes by in such a good and beautiful way. For me, it also makes me feel like i missed something. In my school time i had many school swaps through the time, cause of some PTSD in my past. Nearly every year or so. So i never had this moment of beeing together with school friends and a class over years. It also makes me feel a little bit sad about it. especially when i talk with some younger friends from my volleyball club wich are doing their graduation actually. All in all, K-On got instantly one of my favourite anime of all time, the art-style, the characters, everything is so well made. Especially the music, wich i am now listening for about 4 days constantly. BTW, well made video, like your style. ;)

Let's say that this anime is a masterpiece. Never thought I could love it so much because i'm an italian boy in his 20s with no musical talent and who can't play an instrument or never been involved in a band, but this anime slowly captured me since episode 1 with all the atmospheres, all the songs, all the characters, all the situations. When I was near the end I didn't want to finish it, so everyday I watched just one single episode that is a thing that i almost never do. At first place to be honest i didn't want to begin to watch this show because i usually don't watch similar shows (I usually watch battle shonens), I thought it could have been cringe or out of my age, but in the end it captured me

Can relate. I did the same in my 20~ [I'm a pizza boy too ;)]. There are so many good slice of life out there. The best part is that usually they are only 13 or 26 episode. Hyouka is a good one also from KyotoAni; More on the serious side, but still worth to watch.

I just finished watching K-On... Overwhelmed by emotions whithout understanding them. Deep connexions with others is the story of my life and i recently realised the dark side of it. The enormous amount of anxiety i can feel, blaming the others not to be here, blaming them for my fear to be alone. I learned to bring balance to that, pushing me too hard sometimes by choosing "what inspires me rather than people i care about because attachement is bad". Well... your video hit me like a truck ! Exactly as you said "Nothing can be everything" Thanks man

It’s also nostalgic seeing K-on’s modern world without all the modern tech we have today. The anime is set in the same time period as us (2005-2009 iirc so not that long ago) yet it has no smartphones, tablets, wireless accessories, or any of the fancy tech we’re all so used to seeing around us today. There’s just something about seeing the girls’ rooms not having a giant rgb pc on their desk, flip phones still being widespread, them wearing headphones plugged into a separate device to listen to music, needing to use a separate camera to take pictures, laptops still being big and bulky, the ps2 still being the primary gaming console, people still watching TV, etc. Its hard to believe that this world existed just 15 years ago especially in comparison to our current world and its reliance on computing technology. The episodes showing off the inside of the train rides and you getting to see all the passengers either talking, taking in the view, reading or sleeping just does not sit right with today’s norms where everyone is just staring at some tablet or phone when riding a train. Yeah the first 10 years of 2000s were kinda of shitshow but I can’t be the only one that reminisce that period where technology felt like it was just in the right spot of being helpful but not a reliance

This anime hit me in a big way I can't even explain. I grew up with shounen anime and usually never watch shows like K-On but I've fallen head over heels in love with this show and I've been addicted to it for weeks now. It's such a wonderful show that makes you laugh, feel and cry and is super relatable (and I say that not even being the same gender or age as the characters in the show). I especially love how wholesome and friendly it is, which is so welcome as an escape from how harsh and toxic both real life and the internet can be at times. I think that especially is what initially pulled me into this show. I love that you brought up the festival episode, that ended up being one of my favorite episodes. I've been to several music festivals similar to the one depicted in K-On and it was astonishing to me how accurately they portrayed the festival-going expierence and it made me miss it that much more especially in Covid times. Also props for bringing up how there's more layers to K-On then it seems like at first glance. It's honestly really frustrating that many people dismiss this show as nothing but cute girls doing cute things. It is that, but also so much more. K-On has a beautiful coming-of-age story about the power of friendship and finding your place in the world. It does this in a very subtle and unassuming way that's not entirely apparent at first, but becomes much more clear when you look back at certain scenes (like one of my favorite scenes in S1 E9, when Azusa asks Mio why she's still in this band when she could probably do better, and Mio answers she just likes being in a band with these specific people. Or the parallels between S1 E1 and S1 E12 and the story arc Yui goes through between these episodes). Then there's also the theme about taking it slow (loved the Winnie the Pooh clip, thanks for taking me back to my childhood 😊). But I think Naoko Yamada also subtly alluded to this overarching theme through the use of turtles, which make a lot of appearances in the show (there's the turtle statues on the stairwell in the school, the flashback with preschool Yui singing for the turtle but most importantly, Ton-chan). Turtles are all about taking it slow and taking life as it comes. I also think not enough can be said about the genuine love and care that was put in this anime and how that shows. Lots of anime are made with love and care, but there's something special about K-On. From the little details in animation and how the medium is used to express each character differently, to the voice acting work. I think the voice acting is top-notch and I think it's obvious how much the voice actresses loved the characters they were portraying through how each perfectly embodied their role. The voice actresses also all learned to play the instruments their characters play and Yoko Hikasa even learned to play the bass lefthanded like Mio does even though Hikasa herself is righthanded. That level of dedication in itself is mindblowing to me. Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. I could talk hours about how perfect and incredible this show is! But I think this is honestly the best video essay I've seen so far on K-On, thank you so much for making it 👌

As a musician this anime gave me a personal Renaissance to my song writing and guitar playing. As a human it taught me to be happy it happened and not sad that it's gone. It made me regret not being better in my younger years and because of those feelings it has made me a more wholesome person. Excellent show. The ending was the most bitter sweet thing I've experienced

I regret not watching this show for over a decade even though I've known about it for so long and I've watched animes similar to it like Azumanga Daioh, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Clannad. It is indeed a perfect slice of life and I find myself rewatching it often after watching it in December 2022. It has that feel good feeling that a lot of anime just do not have.
