I've done a lot of martial arts for the last 25 years of my life. I train everyday. Honestly, from being in a lot of fights, the toughest ppl are the ones who can stop the takedowns, can take a shot and can deliver effective strikes. The idea to let someone take you down or the idea of being on the ground in a street fight will become very dangerous if there is more than 1 person.

Yeah, people have been saying that for at least the last 30 years which is when I started paying attn. The response, also for the last 30 years, is that 95% of fights end up on the ground. And there they go back and forth. But also, other arts just DON'T WORK even against one attacker. Tae Kwon Do has become worthless as it is the quintessential McDojo franchise designed to take money from well meaning parents. And in other martial arts, when they train against multiple attackers, they do it one attacker at a time anyway...

I had friends in traditional arts like GoJU ryun. Shotokan, even kung fu. They did fine against untrained A-holes even larger ones. A lot has to do with the school not loosing focus on training to fight. And there is an art and culture component which as much as Inlove BJJ i think it lacks.

My son was an insecure mess despite being strong ,fast good sized kid. Socially awkward but a sweet kid who got teased. His personality has changed for the better. Walks confident. 2 years of rolling changed him for the better. Loves to grapple and his 10 year old ears are starting to show it. 3 times a week and one private lesson a week... Best way to get good is to go to jiujitsu and his is an addict. Loves it. Best decision I have ever made as a parent.

Being someone who has served in the military, LE, and been a professional bouncer for almost 25 years I will say that if all you know is ground fighting, you will end up in a very bad place. The ground is usually no prob for 1 on 1 and if you are good maybe even 2 on 1 for a time. But the moment more people are introduced as well as debris on the ground (Sand/dirt, gravel/rocks, glass etc) then the risk to you skyrockets the longer you stay on the ground rolling. Ground fighting is great when there are rules and referees and 1 on 1. Go beyond that and you seriously risk having your butt handed to you. I have seen it time and time again with ground fighters who where amazing on the mat but got nothing less than a serious lesson in the street with street rules. It got to the point in bouncing where people who only did ground work and put in applications with us, we would just throw those apps aside. Same typically with MMA trained fighters. No sense of use of force and when the hell to stop. A balanced but traditionally disciplined training is what I have come to respect and employ myself after almost 40 years in the martial arts and in careers that required my training. Don't get me wrong, ground fighting is important, though I am a Judo guy myself. I have trained BJJ though. But without balance and the proper mental training and self discipline I see all to often missing in MMA clubs, your training is not rounded or complete.

Exactly my thought. I'm by no means an expert but I made my homework and I know for sure that the best defense is 1) deescalate 2) flee 3) if you can't flee, this is 1v1 and there are other people at voice range : try submission and deescalate or projection and flee. 3 bis) If you can't find a safe escape route, you can't reach out to other people for help and there is potentially other foes in the vicinity. Well you better grab something sharp and make sure to make it look like this isn't worth messing with you.
@straycat1674
@straycat1674 2 жыл бұрын
@@al8-.W exactly. And you know I’m going to butcher the hell of this so forgive me, but the samurai had a saying that kind of went, a good samurai is not going to put himself in a position where he risk getting hurt and cannot appropriately serve his master. In other words, he’s not gonna go places where he risk getting injured or killed just by being there knowing how dangerous it is, he’s not going to do things that risk his safety. It’s an ignorant thing to knowingly and intentionally put yourself In a dangerous situation where you might end up getting killed or having to kill someone else, for nothing but ego. This being said, I am an adrenaline junkie. But I don’t go out risking my life and other lives in brawls and fights. I’d rather jump out of an airplane or climb something that nobody else has claimed. To me that’s a different risk. And one thing I’ve always try to drill into people I’ve trained over the years, no matter how bad ass you think you are, luck trumps skill every day. And no matter how tough you think you are, there’s always somebody better. There’s no dishonor and avoiding conflict when you can. There’s actually more on her than that then arbitrarily just getting involved in every fight that comes your way.

Even Rickson Gracie, when he had a monthly column in the 90s once said that. He wrote about how as a kid he got into a fight with two brothers. Whenever, he tried dealing with one of them, the other would attack. The fight lasted a while before he finally choked one out and the other ran away leaving his brother. The key word is "kids". If it had been a fight between adults (who might be more willing to use a weapon), it could have turned out differently for Rickson or anyone else.

Tae Kwon Do, is not just fancy kicking. It is a very brutal technique. That's what the forms teach you. Like how to kick someone's knee, palm hit someone's nose or hit someone's neck. What people see in the tournaments is just point scores. Everyone mocks the forms for the belts and Dan's passing, but if you exercise them correctly and with strength, they can give severe blows to more than one opponents. Not to mention that they provide you a good physical and mental exercise.

"You shouldn’t let someone take you down to the ground just so you can do jiu jitsu" - huge misunderstanding about good BJJ people. They are usually going to have the ability to take the other person down, not let the other person take them down. It´s like people ignore the fact how BJJ has takedowns from both Judo and wrestling even though they are not the main focus. A good BJJ person will much rather take an attacker down and then have the option to grapple further, get away, ground and pound etc. than let the attacker take them down.

I have done Karate then Thai Boxing and I can easily say karate is pretty much worthless in self deference. Yes you learn moves and stuff but there are way more efficient martial arts in self defense category. Thai boxing and kickboxing are just superior in upright fights. If you don't train with contact and just hit air all the time like karate does you will go down in a single random punch and will have no chance to recover on anything. Boxing is also great as you have fairly strong punches but legs have longer reach in general and in close combat knees and elbows are killers.

Brazilian Jiujitsu is important but not at all complete. If there are two people attacking you and you go to the ground, what do you do? The important thing is to never go to the ground, for that you learn Taekwondo, karate, Krav Maga, Japanese Jiujitsu, etc... Of course if you end up on the ground JJB is fantastic, but in the street I would never go to the ground to fight if I could choose.

Kids should learn BOTH. I have a 4th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and a 1st Degree Black Belt in BJJ. I just earned my first degree Several months ago. It’s true that more than 80% of all fights end up on the ground, but they all start standing up. If you’re skilled in stand up fighting, then you won’t have to worry about the ground. If however, you end up on the ground, then BJJ all the way.

@MrDayday4641 2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you would say that being skilled in stand up fighting means you don't have to worry about the ground. Some of the most highly skilled strikers in the world get into mma (for example) and get taken down. Heck, most of the best grapplers are taken down at times. Even when four-legged animals fight, they end up on the ground. So for bipeds, it's nearly inevitable. As a BJJ black belt, I would think that your stance would be more like, "learn all aspects of fighting". Plus, saying all fights start standing up as a rebuttal to 85% of fights go to the ground is odd. As a tenured martial artist, I would think that where the fight ended up would be significantly more important to you than where it started.

I've been in 4 fights as a kid/teen. None of them ended on the ground. In 1 fight, the "opponent" tripped and fell, but he kept me away with his legs until others broke us up. As an adult, I did end up on the ground once. I fought 3 guys (like a dumbass) at the same time and somehow kept my own (for a minute) until one of them pushed me (rugby style) into a small ditch. There were walls on either side and the dude was stomping my head, so I immediately deescalated with whatever crap I could spew to "make peace," and his buddy soon shook him off. However, I highly doubt that if I knew how to take the much bigger bodybuilder who was stomping my head with me into the ditch, I would've been able to turn things around when his friends were there too. What saved me was my ability to block/dodge punches to the head (every single blow from all 3 of them was to the head) and my ability to rapidly deescalate once things went south. So, in my experience, no. Fights do not go to the ground "85% of the time," and the ground is not a place you want to be in a street fight. In my experience, boxing is waaay more likely to be useful in a fight than groundwork (and no, I'm not a boxer). People with no martial arts experience clench their fists and swing towards the head, and most people you'll get into fights with do not have martial arts experience. If they end up on the ground, it's because someone tripped, they grabbed each other while swinging, or someone got knocked the F out. But, even there, a boxer, karate guy, etc. can still defend themselves because most people do not know jiu jitsu, so they'll continue to try and punch you.

I think Karate style kicks aren't used as much in mma as I think they should be. I've seen several fighters in mma who I thought could have benefited from Karate and Tae Kwon Do style kicks. These kicks can help fighters to maintain some distance while also scoring points against certain fighters. If you're dealing with a fighter who's very effective in boxing range I'd recommend staying out of that range some by using Karate kicks. You can score points with effective kicks and maintain some distance with those kicks.

I believe LE came up with that statistic of fights ending up on the ground from an arresting officer versus a suspect situation. How would LE know how many civilian versus civilian fights end up on the ground? Any sample size they would have from incident reports would be far too small. I have been in roughly 4 or 5 street fights. Only 1 ended up on the ground, from a punch.

For those who say that jiujitsu only works against one opponent, I will say: Wow, they seem to admit that, against jiujitsu, not a single opponent is worth. Also, first, jiujitsu experts are not stupid, with more than one opponent they will not go to the ground voluntarily. But you can throw the opponent and hit with the ground or kick him without staying on the ground. Second : there is no other martial art that guarantees you to beat more than one opponent, if they know how to fight. And I'm not a jiujitsu practitioner, I quit martial arts years ago. I always practiced styles that made me waste my time ... kung-fu, some taekwondo and karate ... if I was born again I would practice muay thay and jiujitsu, but focusing on jiujitsu. A relative, a third dan black belt in judo, gave me practical lessons about the time I had lost. Sorry for my english.

Actually the #1 goal of martial arts is to bind your spirit and body as one allowing you to tap into latent abilities and achieving balance in both mind, soul and body. Once you engage in a fight, nobody wins. A true martial arts master can win without raising a fist. I trained in Jhoon Rhee style Taekwando since I was a kid until I graduated high school. And while I do respect this practitioner and anyone who practices martial arts, I would hope that they are not ignorant enough to believe that the style matters. As long as you are trained by a real master, that's all that matters. PS- Taekwando is just 50% of what you should learn, the other 50% should be Hapkido, which is a mix of Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Students normally just don't learn it until they've strengthened their legs so they can stay grounded and balanced.

No, it is not the best self defense technique by a long shot, but it gives you a base that most adults cannot learn as well. It makes your kicks and punching technique engrained in your DNA. Another great aspect of jiu jitsu is that self defense situations are so adversarial in the legal world. If I break someone's nose with a punch or kick in a self defense situation, my claim of self defense in many cases can be invalidated and I can be charged with "assult with deadly force" (even though I was defending my self). Using jiu jitsu, I have a choice: I can apply an arm lock and/ or take my opponent to the ground and apply a leg lock and hold and hold my opponent down without causing any visible injury to my opponent. Jiu jitsu is also very effective for a man if he has to defend himself against a crazy woman or vice versa.

There aint no pads on the streets.. You can fuck someone up on the ground and walk away bloody like you lost never even being hit once. Years of traveling on the streets with just a Taekwondo Blackbelt and a lot of scraps growing up jail homelessness ect.. My brother was a wrestler my dad shared some judo so a little grappling from big ass dad and wrestling with my huge brother to winning state championships in taekwondo because they were all students and I was the one person whos life depended on my martial arts and communication on a daily basis. When I ended up homeless I did everything to avoid any fight possible and would try to throw a warning flashy move and tell them calm down or im leaving chill, but when it came down to seriously dangerous guys on the streets(not ur avg falling apart bum but felons and convicts) I had to be extremely agile and technical and do my best to manage distance and not get into a brawl.. pick your shots be patient.. don't try to finish them off or ko them just out last them while as relaxed as can be try to over load their mental circuits with information.. Most common defense for me has been front leg knee checks into the straight and reverse(usually pulled) and faking a backfist to cover launching in to the power side kick(chest away from target pushing with glutes). The bjj guys I have fought have mainly been scared, scared, scared, then shoot.. Ive noticed i have never seen a bjj practitioner take down a technical fighter who wasn't loading up shots. Taekwondo has great takedown self defense and ground game.. Me and my Bjj green belt ex best friends last fight ended up with him unconscious from a darce choke after his 3rd attempt at a takedown. In taekwondo after years of practice you learn to only use a very minimal amount of muscle in your body to block move defend strike.. this allows for a much easier reaction time and control. Basically in jail or streets avoid the ground at all costs because people not even involved in the fight will just try to get a lick in.. Well im from the streets of houston and vagabonded the U.s in places like Baltimore Atl chicago homeless in nyc from bronx to brooklyn.. 40 plus times thru new orleans.. and Im telling you the best defense that has kept me alive thru all those years: Get the fuck out of there. All glory to God

Nice speech broski. But the level of lies that you said is remarkable. 1) JJ is not the ultimate MA, we also have wrestling, Judo, Russian Sambo , mongolian wrestling, ect. 2) JJ can't win fights on it's own, even against striking. Pure JJ can't win against striking because there are no strikes in JJ, it's only the grappling. So the moment you use it you are getting K.O. That's why you practice striking, in order to set up the takedowns and to gain the upper hand against wrestlers on the ground, for they can out maneuver you. Also JJ is not only ground grappling. You were describing kosen judo my friend. So in essence you practice kosen judo (the newaza = the ground game). 3) So to conclude modern JJ isn't a pure MA style, it's a mixed bag, or should i say it's a mixed martial art, composing of judo's newaza and some myau-thai kick boxing. If you use pure JJ even a boxer can beat you. The only problem with the other "traditional" MAs is that they don't upgrade their repertoire. Karate is one such example. They don't improve their punching, nor their grappling, nor their kicking, they don't improve at all. And then they wonder why they lose against even mildly trained boxers. So be honest and just admit that you aren't teaching JJ, but an MMA style. You can even call it BamBam Jiu Jitsu. I guess that's the fashion of the day to call everything JiuJitsu now. Before we called every MA karate, now it's JJ

I've been doing karate for 4 1/2 years and they teach you a few ground defenses and some locks and throws that also focus on defending yourself from a bigger person, so karate is not "useless" as you say, you just don't know what you're talking about. And because you're saying this, it's pretty obvious that you have never done karate before.

i have won over 14 championships in taekwondo and 2many fights but once I got destroyed by someone on steroids, I was on the ground getting hammer after the other, I vouched from that day to stop learning taekwondo and start learning BJJ instead, good video because it tells you that punching and kicking is good against people smaller than you. Word of advise: dont let anyone punch you first because once you're dizzy you're on the floor you better hope the other guy is just a fighter not a killer.

There is definitely a war going on right now about whats better. Well it really all about what are you naturally talented. Do you like grappling or striking. I would say you should try to learn as many martial arts styles as you can cause it will make you a better more gifted athlete you may like self defense side of judo and jui jitsu and at the same time you may like the toughness of karate which will make you punch and kick with more power and will make you physically tough it will also teach you pressure points breaking bones with one strike and make your hands stronger. Im not sure in jui jitsu they do all that just grappling and rolling around on the floor. Judo in my opinion is better cause not only will it teach you grappling but throwing someone on the floor is a good feeling not to mention it takes the wind right out of you when you get slammed on the ground repeatedly.

Okay so he said punching and kicking a person bigger than you won't work it's basically the same thing with bjj, if their bigger and you're not strong enough to take the down or get out from under them if they're on top of you and they are just naturally stronger and can resist what you're trying to do doesn't that mean it's useless too? 85% of fights go to the ground but what about that 15% that don't? If you can't punch or kick what good will grappling alone do you if you're getting kneed in the face and shit? Personally I don't like how he was undermining Karate and TKD like that.

Where were you guys 25 years ago when my parents decided to put me in TaeKwonDo at the age of 4 lol. I got my Black belt in TaeKwonDo at 8 years old, I likely would’ve gotten destroyed by someone bigger than me since TaeKwonDo doesn’t allow punches to the face. Respect to you guys for getting to these kids early and teaching them something more practical, especially for the naturally smaller kids.

What a lot of Karate styles lack is teaching people to aim to violently strike areas like the throat. Stop aiming for body shots or Head shots. Aim for vital areas which is also what Jiu Jitsu does but make your striking effective and decisive in the same way your chokes are.

everyone should know how to fight on the ground if thats where the fight happens to end up! ....but it should never be your goal to go to the ground!.....choosing to go to the ground in a street fight is very unwise!......unless its written in stone that your opponent respects the unwritten rules of a one on one fight, no weapons, no friends......and youre fighting on grass or something, you're taking a hell of a risk! ......because even if you are in the dominant position, you are still tied to your opponent, and become a stationary target! im not denying that bjj is effective, but as a guy who grew up in a rough neighborhood where fights that start off 1 on 1 with no weapons dont always end that way, going to the ground goes against every survival instinct i have! .......also many ppl are killed in street fights by people with short concealed knives!.....so the last thing i want to do is grapple with someone when i have no idea whats in their other hand.

Bjj basically started mma they dominated the first few ufcs and then everyone realised you have to cross train with it or another form of strong grappling like wrestling. You'll realise how foundational it is once you start doing it.
