All these poor Fucking sad do what their told kids are can't ever be in my position because they are fucked with debt. I will be retired from doing "work with 10 years" because I can hire employees and grow my company. I will do 2-3 hours a day of equipment maintenance and paperwork. DO NOT FUCKING GO TO COLLEGE UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AND THAT JOB PAYS A VERY VERY HIGH WAGE. Do yourselfs a favor. Live with your family as long as you can work/save or start a biz

About all college is good for nowadays is law, engineering, medicine, nursing, computer science and to a lesser extent teaching because with those degrees you're pretty much guaranteed a job straight out of school. Pursue anything other course of study and you're just pissing in he wind!
@the_gilded_age_phoenix87179 жыл бұрын
Phayzyre105 You're doing worse than "pissing in the wind" with Law. No one thinks Law is useful unless you've got major connections and graduate in the top 10% of a top 14 Law School. Computer Science is also iffy these days.
@phayzyre10529 жыл бұрын
saintgauden Funny you should mention that....I personally know a lady from Springfield, Massachusetts who tried to strike out on her own after she passed the BAR exam but failed to do so. She to had to go join one of those "Dewey, Cheatam & Howe" law firms just to get started. That was over 15 years ago and she's just NOW opened her own law office last I heard. And yes, computer science is very iffy! If you need further proof just look at how Disney recently fired all of their well paid American workers in favor of all these foreigners who'll do the same work for chump change!
@the_gilded_age_phoenix87179 жыл бұрын
Phayzyre105 The Springfield lady was lucky she could get into a X, Y & Z Law Firm. Many now are getting reduced to being Staff Attorneys (or Paralegals) at companies making between $40-$60K/year, while sporting over a $100K in loans.

At the very beginning of America there were three things you went to college for. He went to college to become a physician, to become a lawyer or to go into the ministry, theology school. That's it. Now you can get a degree in women's studies or gender studies or underwater basket weaving. There are some jobs I think college is necessary for, like medical school or law school still, perhaps engineers. But the vast majority of jobs I think can be learned by being on the job. There's a really good book by David Mamet called The Secret knowledge, he used to be a communist and he changed in his older years, and part of the book talks about how useless most universities are. They are just places for Millennials to avoid the real world for as long as possible.
@amazinglats60207 ай бұрын
I don’t even think college should be necessary to become a doctor, medical school is enough. I’d trust my doctor if they were able to make it through medical school even if they didn’t have an undergraduate degree.

Electritians don't need college. They can get a trade or apprenticeship. As for being a doctor or lawyer, obviously you need to go to college, there is no other way to do it, (as far as I know).

I am from Morocco, and one of the great things is that education is free for everyone. We have public faculties, and public schools. The schools are the best options since they have the best conditions and lead to quite a high rate of employment afterwards. But they are selective, taking mostly the best performing students.Once you get accepted in one of these schools, the best chances are on your side. Which I believe is pretty fair. You just need to work hard if you want to make it, no money needed in the process. There are also grants for the poorest, but its just to help them with accomodation. For the school fees we pay something like 5 dollars per year, so it is pretty much given.

The high price is the result of high demand caused by easy loans. America has voted to give EVERYONE a chance to go to college. If the US was as selective as Morocco, the tuition prices would plummet and taxes could put the remainder of kids through college.

I am a software engineer and I do value the education I got in computer science. It did help me learn to think and program. That beign said, I am constantly learning how to do my job, as it is an industry that is constantly changing. Going to school also teaches you discipline but if you are going to be a computer programmer without college you better build a bunch of crap on your own first before applying to antoher company. Why would I want to hire you if you have no experience and nothing on your resume. A good resume of software you made will be good enough to replace a degree. But you have to be disciplined and I still recommend you educating yourself online at the least.
@BuckeyeBDH10 жыл бұрын
I'm also in IT, an Network Analyst, and didn't spend one day in college. IT is always changing and requires that you constantly learn but that usually means studying on your own or experimenting on something new, poking and prodding something to see how it works, breaking it to find how to fix it. Experience teaches better than a book. Most of the best people I know in IT, learned on there own, worked their way up from the bottom. Unfortunately I know way too many English majors working in IT.
@Cork_UO10 жыл бұрын
BuckeyeBDH I agree. I also work in IT and worked my way up to a 6 figure salary with absolutely no college or formal training. I went back to school for Biology in my 30's after I already had a career in IT. And I paid for my classes as I took them so I have no student loan debt. IT is one of many fields that you can be very successful without having any formal training or education.
@wayneweisser10 жыл бұрын
Another vote for IT and no college! Start on a help desk resetting passwords and fixing paper jams and the rest is up to you. I went back to school in my 40's for two years and was not impressed by the students or the system. Without even trying. Sure they get A's, but can barely tie their shoes without their parents and even in school it's "give me the answer" not "how do I find the answer?"
@2Ensta10 жыл бұрын
wayne weisser I love the work that I do, and I do believe college taught me some software development principles that helped get me started. Still I could have learned this on my own. Then as for specific coding questions, I learn to become good friends with Google and StackExchange.
@Bobxchen3335 жыл бұрын
But there are other ways to learn computer science than going to college. For example Edx, they offer Micro Degrees, you can learn about Algorithm, artificially intelligence. If you just want to learn you can take the online course for free. If you want a certificate you will have to pay 100 - 200 per course. And for more practical use you can do udemy or teamtreehouse.
@tommytube626 жыл бұрын
Either way get some education or learn a trade, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC /Refrigeration techs make 40 plus an hour after four years. Work for an Electric Company, $15,000-20,000 to go to lineman school and Make $25 to 40 per Hour right out of school and should be making $100,000 per year with overtime within 3 years. I see so many jobs that i would be great at, but they want a degree. It often doesn't matter what type of degree, as long as your in the "club". Get a degree,....... your in the Club. Unless you're super smart, extremely determined and focused to do something that doesn't require a degree, then get a degree, don't worry so much about what type of degree. You'll be way ahead of the game. You can find a college with a considerably low tuition. There are so many jobs i wish i could get at age 55 that i know i would get and be Great at, and better than most with a degree, but i can"t because i have no degree.....I'm not in the club. It's the Degree that is more important than what you learn while your intiating to be in the club. That being said...... I Will visualize may way to millions.

For those wanting to "do college" differently, you should check out the EBook "College out of the Box"! (and the FB page) My son was able to do college and high school together with NO student debt (a total of only about $3,000) from an accredited long distance college. Never had to step foot on a campus, NO debt, no wasted time! It works for adults wanting to get their degree, high school students who want to earn a few credits to transfer in to their choice school or the way my son did it! For sure, college is a HUGE business- don't let your kids start off life in debt or without the needed skills!

Your way of thinking would create even MORE unemployment amongst post-grads, because there would be an even greater push to get kids into college and therefore and even larger churning out of people with useless degrees. Furthermore, college will continue to rise in tuition the more people attend it. It's a vicious, never-ending cycle, and people are too scared too admit they're wrong so it will continue on and on.
