Political organizer, pilot, and the possible reincarnation of a comedy legend. Krist Novoselic has certainly kept busy since his days playing bass for Nirvana.

@Metal_Horror9 ай бұрын
Realistically, yeah, I think that's probably what he meant. Or maybe people would have thought Dave took advantage of Kurt's death to become the star front man. There are conspiracy theories out there. I've heard from more than one person that they thought Dave may have been involved in Kurt's death, and replacing Kurt had been one of the motives. Personally, I think Courtney had him killed; there's evidence that she hired someone for that purpose, and even her father thought that she'd been involved. Edit: now that I think about it more, it's possible that he *did* feel that detectives may have considered him more of a suspect. Jealousy is an extremely common motive for murder, and Dave became a front man after Kurt died. With Krist as the bassist, it definitely may have seemed as if Dave longed for more of the spotlight.

@@Metal_Horror you make good points. I also think Novaselic didnt have 'the look' for Foo in the mid 90s as he was super tall and maybe his hair was declining by that time so he instead got some younger looking ppl. Kurt was the band. Foo Fighters had a lot of fun songs, but Kurt made them something special. To this day, I still refer to Nirvana as my generation's The Beatles. When Kurt died, it really damaged a lot of people who needed him to speak and be their voice. It was a formative event for many. I will never forget the way the teens in my school responded to news of his death... School authorities caught wind of our plan to wear black armbands and walk out of class at a predetermined time for a funeral service on the front lawn. They warned that they would punish us if we did it. I don't think they understood that telling us that galvanized us. So many kids ended up participating that they realized it would be in the local news if they suspended us all. In the aftermath, it was explained to them that, for us, it was like the day Lennon was shot had hit them. When they realized that, it ended their upset. I know this sounds like the whole bus should clap now, but it happened, and I like to think that Kurt would have appreciated that moment of understanding and harmony.

What part of the country was that? I went to high school in Vegas. Nirvana wasn’t very big there. Most of their big fans were girls. We had more of a metal/punk scene than “grunge”. Although Soundgarden was big. Far bigger than Nirvana. The radio still played Nirvana constantly but hardly any of my peers were into them. I felt like they got bigger after he killed himself.

@powerbychevy How bout PJ & AIC? Ik Nirvana performed in California plenty of times on tour so I'm suprised they weren't big in Nevada/Vegas. Huh...
@AlphanumericCharacters8 ай бұрын
@@jamesvancam I would say AIC was fairly popular. PJ was up there with Soundgraden. I’m not saying the Seattle scene had no foothold it just wasn’t that big of a deal. There were probably 5% of kids wearing combat boots, shorts, and flannels. Of them not a lot seemed big into Nirvana. I remember the day he died or maybe the next day a girl was crying about it on one of my classes. Unfortunately the only other reaction I really saw was people making jokes. There definitely was no big coming together in mourning type thing. In the next few years it seemed like their popularity picked way up. Figured from the mystique of it all. That’s why I’ve always thought the narrative that Nirvana “changed music” was bullshit. Like one day we were all rocking out to Poison then we heard “Teen Spirit” and the world was never the same again. That was not my experience at all but we do each live in our own silo. Maybe the kids across town were doing candlelight vigils or something. Nirvana just never seemed like a huge deal until MTV/VH1 started making their documentaries claiming they were the cause of some cultural transformation. Just seemed like grunge was another fad. New Wave to hair metal, to grunge, to Nu Metal. All of those scenes really only lasted 5-6 years but nobody is making shows about how Korn “changed the landscape forever”. All that isn’t to say that the band didn’t matter to lots of people. Or to argue against anyone’s perspective. Just saying what I saw in my corner of the world.

It was because Krist was too punk for Dave's vision. Pat, despite having lived in the golden period of punk whilst playing for the Germs, was just kind of a sassy boy. He fit as 'one of the characters.' Krist was also very loud back then. Like, he loved to talk. Worked great for Kurt when he didn't feel like talking to the press or whomever. But Dave wanted to control not just the music of his vision, but all public perception. While he respected Krist's anarchistic ideals, he did not want those ideals representing his vision, but at the same time didn't want to repress Krist's ability to speak freely. Makes sense. Dave wasn't being a dick and while Krist probably wanted to be a part of it, but he's the kind of guy who in the end would be content just playing music, which he did. And he is finacially set for life so that's whatever. These aren't the type of guys who care that much whether they make $100k or $10million in a year as long as they are fed and comfortable. But Dave, unlike Kurt, does like the spotlight. He is constantly doing interviews and making appearances, which is fine by me. He just had a brushing with punk, he is not one nor claimed to be. And he is the type of guy who actually deserves the spotlight if that is what he wants. Pretty sure this is why, they just don't want to elaborate on it for decades and no one wants to come off as a dick.

Yes, he technically played with that team as a full-fledged member, but he was never credited on the actual team roster. I consider Pat a member but I can see how it's debatable. It's why Jason Everman was considered a member, because he was credited on a studio recording (despite not actually playing on it and only having played with the band live, just like Pat).

As great as it would've been for those two to keep working together as bandmates, post-Nirvana, it would've been hella awkward -- especially given that Krist very likely needed a significant amount of time to work thru his grieving process in the wake of Kurt's death, what with the two of them being childhood friends before becoming bandmates (I believe that they met when they were in middle school). I don't mean to minimize Dave and Pat's grief (especially Pat, given that his was compounded by him losing the frontman to his earlier band, D'Arby Crash of L.A. hard-core punk pioneers, The Germs, also to suicide), but they only worked with Kurt for the last few years of his life; so, Krist's had to be much more profound. Those two were like the total embodiment of that "brothers-from-another-mother" cliché -- they were that close. Much of that first FF album was Dave processing his grief in a musical format, and I think that he totally needed to do that in order to heal. In order for Krist to heal, I think that he needed to withdraw himself from the music industry, entirely, and find some other way to define himself, because being in a band with Kurt had been central to his life and identity for at least a dozen years prior to Kurt's suicide. To lose not only a bandmate, but a close childhood friend, in such a dramatic and emotionally devastating way (especially someone like Kurt who literally went from rags to riches, overnight) has got to royally f*** with one's mind. Krist did exactly that very thing; after those first cpl./few years, post-Nirvana, he immersed himself in local progressive political causes but eventually did dip his toe back into the professional musician world. However, he seems content with focusing on short-term, low-profile side-project collaborations with local/regional musicians whom he has strong relationships with whose aspirations don't necessarily involve touring around the world to support big-budget albums backed by major labels. He has appeared to genuinely enjoy himself on the handful of occasions when he and Dave have reunited to perform as Nirvana with other artists subbing-in for Kurt, but he also doesn't want to be part of a novelty act that cynically milks Nirvana's legacy for nostalgia purposes alone. To him, that kind of shameless exploitation would only serve to irrevocably taint the purity of the magic that he and Kurt had had, first, as friends and eventual bandmates, second

Dave is not being honest here. I swear he said way back in the day Krist simply wanted no part in music at all after Kurt died. He withdrew from the industry and basically retired and went into politics. There was never any shot of him picking up bass ever again

Pat wasn't an occasional second guitarist. He was a member of Nirvana. Put some respect on that man's name. He was a founding member of The Germs, he was in the original Blade Runner, shoot, he's even in Prince's Raspberry Beret video. He's an all-around awesome guy.

I was 21 when Nirvana ended. They were the biggest band on the planet and-all of a sudden- In 1994-95, Grohl was "the drummer from Nirvana," as in "there's a new band called Foo Fighters fronted by the drummer from Nirvana." The entire pop culture world was waiting and Dave had unfairly high expectations. So I can see Krist saying, "You are a great friend Dave, I love playing music, but I am not ready to be in another high profile band." Krist also gets writing royalties from Nirvana as well as other royalties, so he is living comfortably.
@matthewseppi70436 ай бұрын
I'd be surprised if Krist would have wanted to be in Foo. He, like Kurt, seemed very averse to that slick, slightly corny sound.

Basically Nirvana without Kurt. Dave taking over singing duties would definitely invite infinite amount of comparisons and scrutiny. Dave made a wise decision.
