If you've ever seen flowing water look frozen like glass... that's Laminar flow

Personally, I find calculating Reynolds number to be quite difficult.
It's done differently depending on what type of flow you have. A pipe is calculated different than an airplane wing etc.
Some fluid dynamicists would tell you that it's an exact science. I personally feel that it's a bit subjective.
The most difficult parameter to nail down in my humble opinion is the characteristic length.
It's pretty easy for pipes, you just measure the diameter... but wings, plates, vortices...get complicated quickly.
You'll notice in the video I refrained from saying anything like
"Flow is laminar when Reynolds number is less than XXX" or
"Flow is turbulent when Reynolds number is more than XXX".
There are different schools of thought on this. Typically the transition between laminar flow and turbulent flow occurs somewhere between 2100 and 4000 (Reynolds number is unitless).

When you put the pencil and the rod back in the amount of water coming out was instantly much less than leaving the hole empty and why you need to let the hospital take the things out! Two learning opportunities in one video!

Hey, destin i am a window cleaner and I wanted to see if maybe you'd do a video on the topic. the way water adheres to glass and the way the squeegee takes it off is mesmerizing but there is a lot of science there. like if you scratch tempered glass the scratch widens hours after it occurs so if you do scratch a window you won't know until later. another thing I've noticed is if you clean some tempered glass panes when you go to squeegee it at the interface between an area that's dry and an area that's wet will make this strange branching pattern I wish I could explain it more but it looks like trees or like veins in your body. also, we use a system that filters water pretty often we can get dissolved solids to less than 2 parts per million that way when we spray the windows the water leaves behind no minerals and we use polarized glasses so we can see if there are plastic films on the windows. there's a lot to cover but I figured its something that could be interesting sorry this is so long its just a topic that excites me!

It's always nice to hear somebody talk about their work when they have a passion and curiosity for it whether it be rocket science or cleaning windows. That's the kind of craftsman that you want to hire. It's hard to find people who care as much about your own property as you do , but when they still hold some wonder and passion for their work it's the closest you can get. Makes paying the final bill a little bit less painful because it is usually a job well done.

Oh wooooow!!! When you started shooting your reflection, I flashed way back to when I was younger. Hanging out over edge of my grandpa's boat, watching the water arc up at the front, when the lake was calm there was that period of time as the boat accelrated(or slowed back down) where it was a solid sheet instead of a spray, and I loved seeing the trees and clouds reflected in it.

Destin you forgot the bloodstream, which is always laminar in our arterial vessels, and any damage to the endothelium, like say atherosclerotic plaque, creates a turbulent flow and it causes further damage to the arterial wall. Blood is pretty viscous liquid, and any disturbance in its flow causes all the blood particles to collide with each other at a greater rate and that causes thrombosis. So, keep it laminar, keep it healthy!

I've always been a bit dubious on that claim, since they use Reynolds number criteria on a pulsating suspension in elastic walls, where they shouldn't really apply.. Normal bloodflow is pretty stable and it's clear that problems arise when it get's disturbed too much, but characterising it as "laminar" is getting challenged quite often, as it probably isn't that in the classical sense of the term.

Though commenting on this almost 2 years after it was made, we took advantage of this for a trick as kids (though I hadn't really thought about it as such until now). I grew up in the middle of nowhere Idaho and all the farming there is done by irrigation. To control who gets water when, the irrigation district employees would go around and adjust the gates along the ditches and canals. We had a couple of swimming holes where some of those gates were right by a small bridge. We would swim up under the bridge, where there was almost a circular "lazy river" created by the flow from the gates. If the gate height was just right, then the water spilling over was laminar. We would often back up towards this laminar spillover and when it reflected off the back of our heads, it would create a pocket of air (just like in your fountain) and we could just sit there and breath the air from the pocket. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!
