I get asked often what the best chlorine type is to use in a pool. There are a great many choices out there and the best one is one of the oldest methods, straight liquid chlorine. In the old days, it used to be chlorine gas but with regulations and such that practice has disappeared. Liquid chlorine is strong and has the least side effects for your pool.
Liquid Chlorine or Bleach is the tried and true standard chemical of choice for most pool service professionals. It is easy to use and relatively inexpensive and it has the least side effects of any of the chlorine you can choose from. It is usually sold in 12.5% active chlorine per gallon with Bleach coming in at about half that strength at 6.5%. It will raise the pH slightly, but it does not contain any Stabilizer or Conditioner making it ideal for all pool types. This means that when you add a gallon of liquid chlorine and your Conditioner level (CYA) is 50 ppm it will stay at 50 ppm even if you add 20 gallons of liquid chlorine.
Pros:
Fastest acting of all chlorine types
Will not raise your CYA level
Safe for all pool types
Easy to use
Cons:
Breaks down by the Sun’s UV Rays so your pool needs a CYA level of 30-50 ppm
Short shelf life so rotate stock or buy fresh chlorine when needed
The gallons can be heavy compared to a bag of shock
Is seen as weaker than shock based on the low percentage of chlorine but is stronger
Cal Hypo is very popular and there are a number of reasons why it is widely used in the industry. It is easy to carry and comes in different strengths 60-75% active chlorine. One of the major side effects is that it contains calcium, so over time it will raise your pool’s calcium hardness. Not an issue if you live in an area with soft water but I caution the use in areas with hard water. It also has a high pH of around 12 so it will raise the pH in a pool if you use a significant amount each week.
Pros:
Strong and easy to use
Does not contain Conditioner so it will not raise the pool’s CYA levels
Safe for all pool surface types but use caution with a vinyl liner
Cons:
Raises Calcium Harness in a pool
Raises the pH in a pool
Clouds up the pool water
Dichlor is a very popular form of chlorine and the granular form makes it very easy to measure and use in a pool. It is pH neutral which means it will not raise or lower the pool pH in any significant way. It does contain Conditioner, about 45%-50% by weight. So, if you add 10 lbs. of Dichlor to a pool you are also adding about 5 lbs. of Conditioner. Over time this will increase the pool’s CYA levels. Just don’t overuse it because of the high amount of Conditioner in the product. It is usually about 62% active chlorine by weight.
Pros:
Easy to use and powerful
pH neutral
Safe for all surface types
The long shelf life of 2-3 years
Cons:
Adds Conditioner to the pool
Tri-Chlor or Trichloroisocyanuric Acid comes in three forms. The familiar 3” tablets that slowly dissolve in your pool, a very fine powder shock and a granular form. About 50% of the Tri-Chlor by weight is Conditioner. So, a 50 lbs. bucket of tablets is about 25 lbs. of Conditioner. If you overuse tablets your pool’s CYA level can go up rapidly. Trichlor tablets are usually 95% to 99% active chlorine. Tri-Chlor tablets have a very low pH of 2-3 so they will lower the pH in your pool.
Tri-Chlor granular is a very powerful stuff. It is basically the Tri-Chlor Tablet grounded up in granular form and is 99% active chlorine. Use with extreme caution as the Conditioner in the granular can stain the plaster. The CYA in the tablet is basically acid and if you let it pile up on the pool surface it will stain the plaster as if you dropped a 3” Tablet into the pool. Never add this to the skimmer and if you do use it for Black or Mustard algae make sure it is evenly dispersed on the pool surface. Not for use in Vinyl, Fiberglass or color plaster pools.
Pros:
Very strong and slow dissolving in tablet form so it releases chlorine all week long
Easy to use and affordable
Cons:
Can stain the pool surface
Contains 50% CYA by weight

The best pool care channel on KZfaq! Always helpful advice, you likely mentioned this in a past vid, I realize after trial and error that liquid Chlorine at 12% chlorine seems to work much better than the 10% chlorine I purchase from the big boxes, well worth 2X the cost to buy it from the local pool store.

Great Podcast - as usual David! On a 5,000 gal. pool, with CYA at 50 ppm, using 12.5% chlorine, I would need .48 quarts. Will that last a week till the next service, or does it need to be higher, say 6 ppm, to last the week? Or does it have to be added more often? Thanks again for the information!

Maybe try getting it to 10 ppm on your service day and see how it does. As things cool off you will of course need less.

I use ONLY liquid chlorine. No tabs at all. Also sodium bicarbonate for Alkalinity. This combo keeps my pool water very clear and beautiful. If I test CYA and it is 0 or 10, I will put tabs in a floater, or granular CYA in a skimmer sock and place in skimmer basket.

Thank you for your podcast. At first I thought I had chlorine lock but now it seems to be chlorine "demand". My ph is high and free chlorine is zero. Do I need to get the ph and alkalinity down before I attempt to raise chlorine? It is my understanding that a high ph renders the chlorine useless... Any help is much appreciated.

David, is it alright to pour a full gallon of liquid chlorine in a plaster pool once a week for weekly maintenance? We live in the Central Valley area where the temperatures are consistently in the 100's during the summer. I've been adding a full gallon all at once and always at dusk then running the pump for 3 hours. Thank you!

My CYA levels are high and it is summer in the Central Valley of California (our temps range from the high 90s to 110). I want to switch to liquid chlorine to minimize further increasing my CYA levels. I was previously using chlorine tablets and trichlor shock which both have stabilizer. My pool is 16k gallons, in ground with pebble tech type finish. How often would I need to be adding chlorine if that is my only stabilizer? I assume dosing at night with the filter running would be best?

Most commercial pools like aquatic pools use chlorine gas which is highly effective to kill bacteria and when the pool is in heavy use the chlorine stays at 3 ppm to where chlorine tabs aren’t really effective in heavy use

Let's put it this way. I add liquid each day as my chlorine dosing method. It's the middle of summer right now, so I'm having to increase FC 3 ppm to stay in range if the day that just passed was a sunny day. My CYA is 50. I have no organics breaking down chlorine, so this means that 3 ppm is how much the sun is breaking down chlorine each day in my pool (this varies by pool due to different levels of sunlight and where you reside on earth). If I, instead chose another source of chlorine like trichlor to raise FC by 3 ppm, it would burn off equally; at least in the short term. Just because a particular chlorine source happens to be stabilized (trichlor or dichlor) versus another chlorine source that is not stabilized (liquid, cal hypo or chlorine made by a saltwater generator), that fact has very little to do with how long an FC level will hold in a pool before being broken down by the sun comparing dose-to-dose of each type. While it is true that stabilized chlorine does add to your cya level in your pool, and higher cya levels help hold FC longer, and each dose or tablet you add will add to that total level of cya over time (especially dichlor); it's actually the total cya level in a pool that matters regarding sun burn off; not the fact that the actual product contains some cya in is formulation. Example: If I added 3 ppm of dichlor to a pool that the sun was breaking down 3 ppm per day on sunny days, that dose would raise cya by approximately 2.7 (3X.90). For this example, we'll round up to 3. Adding 3 to the cya level will have minimal effect on how long the FC will hold on that single dose, because it's such a small increase in the cya level. Conversely, if I switched to an non stabilized chlorine source like liquid chlorine in that same pool on the very next day, and the weather was exactly the same with the cya exactly the same, the chlorine should hold equally for liquid as it did for dichlor. If, however, instead of switching to liquid, I decided to keep dosing 3 ppm for ten days in a row with dichlor, in that situation, I would raise my cya by approximately 27 (30X.9), and so in this way of dosing stabilized chlorine over time, I am making the pool hold chlorine longer, but less effective, because a lesser amount is active with higher cya; but in order for this to be true that stabilized chlorine holds FC longer than non stabilized chlorine, you have to consider dosing over a period of time. The packaging on the stabilized chlorine is a big lie, because it will try to tell us that it lasts longer than other chlorine sources, and that is NOT true in the short term. Although it's not taught here, but somewhere else, you can actually set your cya at the beginning of the season and keep it constant by always avoiding stabilized chlorine. You then add enough liquid each day or each couple of days to keep your FC above 7.5% of your cya level at all times; thereby never allowing FC to drop too low for algae to ever have a chance. This method requires no tablets; only liquid, but you must first know and record your cya level; use the online, pool math calculator, target FC each day 2-4 ppm above that 7.5% level. This method allows subscribers not to have to routinely shock pools. No need for algaecides, since chlorine is superior to algaecide as an algae preventer; and no need for phosphate removers in most cases, because this method keeps a chemically-correct level of FC at all times for proper sanitation and so algae can't get started. Example of the TFPC methodology: if your cya is 50, your minimum FC level is 4 (rounded up). This means when you test each day or every couple of days, you should never see the FC level below 4; if you find that it's dropping below 4, you're not adding enough to stay ahead of the sun or you have organics breaking down chlorine; you can test for cc's to find out. But anyway, after you test, you then add enough liquid to target FC up to 6-8 in this example, and if you decide dosing each day is too troublesome, then you'll have to go even higher for dosing every two days; maybe 8-12 ppm to stay above that 4 ppm level at all times. The reason that you can actually keep FC this high is that your cya is at 50 and a large proportion of the FC in your pool is not active, since the cya is keeping much of it in reserve at any particular time. These higher FC levels are not too high for safe swimming provided that you have a corresponding cya level to match the proper FC. The TFPC FC suggested levels are actually chemically-correct levels that the industry fails to recognize. Go to troublefreepool.com and try the only method of managing chlorine and cya that uses valid chemistry in their methodologies. Having said all of that, except for the fact that SPL doesn't fully endorse the higher FC methodology without the need to ever shock, these podcasts are the real deal and much of his advice is spot on. I really like his 3-5 FC recommendation, which works as long as you don't let cya get above 50. This fella knows what he's talking about. Swim University is pretty good, but except for troublefreepool, if you're too stubborn to go with the "real deal" TFPC methodologies of pool care, I'd then stick with the info taught on these podcasts. Even TFPC subscribers can learn from this fella in a lot of areas.
