After watching your video i will be so much more conscious because i see the more i compliment her the more she hides inside her self.. I will stop complimenting her on her looks and style and start appreciating her on the things she does and the person she is not how she looks. thanks for the heads up.. A reality check.

Daniel walker thank you for this, everyone (parents especially) seem to think complimenting appearance is so important because they assume we have very low self esteem. And although that is usually the case, it can actually cause a lot of problems. I’m 14 now but started developing an eating disorder at the age of 9 because of this. It’s even worse now, but this means a lot💖

I grew up with an eating disorder, I’m 23 now and have a healthier (not great, but healthier) relationship with food. My boss has two daughters, one of whom also struggles with an eating disorder. And we were talking about it and she says something about how their doctors and therapists and such said to not call their daughter beautiful but instead tell her she looks strong, and I had this moment of like... “That would’ve been so helpful for me on my journey.”

@emma_lou_z: Well, there are a few important and potentially conflicting factors at play when it comes to this issue. One point is that your experience of your appearance is pretty different from other people's experience of it. With your own appearance you need to imagine how you look at any given moment to get a sense of it, whereas other people are actually seeing your appearance visually. So if you fully isolate your sense of appearance from other people, it sort of takes away some of the point of appearance perhaps? I mean, we have inside features that only we have direct access to (so in a way kind of the opposite of visual appearance since when we are with others only others can see most of our features rather than us (we can't look at most of our own face unless we have a mirror)), but appearance is the thing that we put out there that others actually can see. We can always have the inner dialogue with ourselves about any feature of us including appearance, but we can already get kind of experience that through our own thoughts about anything, so looking at appearance as just something to imagine about without regard to other people seems kind of redundant. So I guess, to make appearance only for you may risk closing down one of your only ways of non-verbal communication and presentation, even though such ways can make things good both for others and ourselves in many situations. But I think that you can still feel somewhat free with your looks even if you are still considering other people with your looks. For example, when you decide to look a certain way, you can think of it as, you are communicating to other people that you think the look you chose makes sense or reflects yourself well. So like, even if, say, 80% of people prefer the look of short hair on men, what a man (and I am one of these long-haired men by the way) can present by having long hair anyway, is that he is showing other people, when they look at him, that he looked at his own hair, and found a certain amount of beauty in it, and I think that's a decent thing to communicate to people. And perhaps people can respect that and be intrigued by that even if visually they would imagine a man with my features but with short hair instead to look more appealing to them. But in that sense it's still for not just me, but for others, because I am still trying to use my appearance to communicate, and to give people things to pick up on about me, there is still that interactivity. I still don't feel separate from other people when it comes to my appearance. I don't think the point of appearance should be about control of anything in particular, whether it's a person feeling controlled by others or a person feeling like they are taking control, it's just, how exactly do you want to communicate. And I think that trying to satisfy traditional senses of people or showing people an alternative approach are both valid ways to communicate that have pros and cons, and it's up to the individual what method makes sense for them. And of course it can vary by situation -- that's why people feel like they are in a mood for a certain style one day, and another day want to do something different. So in short, I think inevitably, it's not about just yourself or others, I think it's about both to some degree. I don't think a person can or really should separate appearance from their own self-perception, I think you will inevitably make self-assessments and will want to imagine how you look to other people and reflect on what that means to you. And I also don't think that generally people can or should separate from their appearance from the fact that it's communicating to other people, even interacting with other people passively. We all want to connect with other people in one way or another -- even if that connection is simply "I want to look different and I don't care if you don't like it" -- that's still a connection you are creating with people through your appearance, and something to be considered when choosing your appearance -- it's just of a different flavor from trying to fit into traditional styles. Both approaches can be very appealing if executed well. I just don't want people to forget the inherent social element of appearance -- even if you dress up and don't go outside, you are still thinking about hypothetically, what WOULD people think if they saw this, and being happy about it, or laughing about it, whatever. And I don't think that fact means that you can't feel free with yourself. People will react to anything we do, appearance or otherwise, but it's up to us to decide what to do with that, do we want to embrace it, challenge it, make fun of it, etc. It's a flexible method of communication and social connection.

One minute I'm in your head and feeling this turmoil and then the next "scene" you're on the plane.... back into the mind, thoughts of joy and confidence and liberation, *cuts to* you standing in line at Target... at peace.. I think that's what makes your message so much stronger, besides the fact that it is relatable to the human experience and resonates with so many people, but also that you are so good at oration, so it comes across really well. I’m 13 and I have alopecia (you can search it up if you like) and I’ve been bullied so much at school because of it, kids would rip my hair out at school and say that I didn’t need the hair anyways and people would spread rumours that my condition is infectious and to stay away from me and I would just come home and cry, cry myself to sleep, and hate on myself. I still do sometimes...I have some really great friends who did everything they could to make sure that I didn’t kill myself many times because I have felt like an ugly, fat worthless piece of garbage that nobody likes and without them I probably wouldn’t have been alive to write this comment 😞. Cimorelli has literally become my idol and I wish I could meet them but I live in the UK so the odds of that happening is about 0 but I still really love them and their videos because I can relate to each of them in a different way. They are ALL so talented and make me feel a little less worthless when I watch their videos but the things I have gone through have changed me and the way I think of myself which will take a lot to reverse 😭. Probably no one will see this but it feels kind of good to let go of my emotions where it’s unlikely for anyone to notice it💖. I just want to say that if anyone hates you then don’t hate yourself for it because everyone has something good in them and no matter what there is someone who loves you even if you don’t know it and you are NOT worthless even if you feel that way so don’t let it get to you like I let it get to me. You are beautiful inside and out ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💖 Edit: omg I am FREAKING out right now!!!! This comment has *12* likes AND a ❤️ from Cimorelli. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’m so happy I could cry and I haven’t been this happy in about 2 years...I’m not sure which sister hearted my comment but whoever did honestly thank you so much because I won’t be crying myself to sleep tonight so seriously thank you 😭😭😂 I love you guys SO MUCH 💖💖💖💖

I usually don’t comment stuff like this because I am TERRIFIED of people saying that I’m just trying to get attention when I really am not and all of this stuff has happened to me even though I desperately wish it hadn’t. If you do feel like that, I don’t mind because you are allowed to have your opinion but please don’t start commenting/saying that and please don’t do it to other people because it’s just not nice and no one needs that. It takes a lot of courage to say these things on the internet (at least for me) so don’t make it harder for anyone 😊💖

This was so inspiring! I am actually working on growing my hair out and donating since I’ve wanted to do it my whole life. And as a hairdresser, I always love seeing people come in and wanting their hair to be shaved off or a major change to where they come out looking like a new person. It is so satisfying for me and for the client themselves.

Wearing a hijab aslo empowers me in a similar way. My beauty does not define me, my character does. People will like me for me, and not just my beauty. Don't get me wrong, I still like to feel pretty. I still wear some makeup and look nice however everyone does not see my full potential. Only the person who loves me for my me, my character and my personality gets to see me at my absolute best.

Wow what a women/self impowering video!! Thank you for sharing this personal experience. I think you are going to help a lot of girls and women (including me) with this. We compare ourselves way too much to other people and care too much about what they think about us. It's great to be reminded, that I am not the only one who is struggling with this, and to hear other perspectives and stories. Thanks Lisa!

Lisa is a damn queen! So sad to hear in her songs how boys or men treaded her and how they make her feel. She has such a big heart and makes me happy whenever she posts story’s or Instagram posts. Most of all when she likes my comments, pictures or just answers on my story! She once called me queen and that was definitely the best day of my life. Go get called queen from my idol! I’ve been trough a hard time the last year and Lisa was there for me hahah of course without knowing it but her voice, her personality, in general Lisa made me feel better, accepted and most of all worthy! I love you Lisa for being yourself and for showing me every day that I don’t need to be wrong or not myself to get accepted from others. I love you for burping and not caring what other people will think when u do it. You are my idol and I hope and wish that one day I can hug you and tell you that all personal. I love you!

yeah bc when she had long hair she was extremely insecure, not aware of her self worth yet and depended a lot on her appearance for self reassurance but ever since she cut off all her inches she realized her own self worth slowly and surely, gained control back from the life she was taking a backseat to before and started to focus on bettering her personal qualities and growing from that. insecurity really makes you a different person but so does confidence

Still can’t believe I met them two years ago for my make a wish! Lisa truly inspired me to be confident when I shaved my head while on chemo she really showed me how it doesn’t matter what other people say about you and that you can be beautiful and have self confidence even when you don’t have hair. I honestly can’t thank her enough for that because I honestly Hated what I looked like without hair while on chemo but once she shaved her head my entire outlook on how I looked changed and I actually realized that I Latino looked beautiful without hair.
