Star Trek: The Next Generation aired an incredible episode titled Lower Decks in its seventh season. The episode details junior officers, trying to get promoted amidst an on-going secret mission. Lower Decks has long been hailed a classic episode of TNG and I'm here to talk about it even more. What makes this episode so special? Well, there will be a series, based almost entirely off of it (but now with the same characters) If that doesn't make it a classic episode, what does?

Pinging you here, Renegades part 2 is out on youtube for a limited time, if you haven't seen renegades, I recommend it (obviously watch the first episode first), LOTS of familiar faces and in "the spirit of Star Trek". It used to be called Star Trek Renegades, but the current owners could not possibly let fan made projects have the name Star Trek now could they. :-/ I know you are like me, a dedicated ST Nerd (with a capital N) so please, listen to me when I say, IT'S IN THE SPIRIT OF STAR TREK!

I re-watched this episode early this year, mostly because it appeared on a "best TNG episodes" list and very much like it. The "what if we don't focus on the main characters for an episode" exercise really worked well, and I love the back-story with Sito in this.

I love this episode. The guest stars absolutely hit it out of the park and the ending is like a punch in the stomach. The interspliced poker scenes between the senior officers and the juniors are top tier Trek. Plus that Cardassian mole is a nice glimpse into how deep and nuanced Cardassians can be, which DS9 did brilliantly.

5:23 He must be the junior officer's Guinan. Apparently, either Starfleet or the senior command staff of the Enterprise D feel that junior officers haven't earned the privilege of being served by Guinan yet, so they employed a "lower decks" Guinan to serve the Enterprise peons! 🤣

Only the hint that Ensign Sito would have been happy about his promotion shows how painful and fatal the loss of Ensign Sito really is. She wasn't actually chosen for the promotion for nothing. You can try to fill this gap, but the question always arises as to what else would have been possible for them. Worf's affection provides clear confirmation of this assumption.

I remember watching that episode when it came out, and I initially wondered why we had some new random barman rather than Guinan. Of course, I think it was a good creative choice (assuming that's what it was, and not just Whoopi Goldberg having other stuff on that week), and it's odd to think that if the episode had been made in the last 10 years or so, we'd probably have got some Short Treks featuring them in the lead up to, and in the aftermath of, the episode.

Lower Decks can be compared with To Kill A Mockingbird. Harper Lee's book is an adult drama about a wrongly accused man's trial and defense, told from Scout Finch's childlike, not-fully-informed viewpoint. This episode is about a high-security mission, details known only to the senior officers, told from the perspective of junior officers who don't know why they're doing the things they're ordered to do.

A few thoughts: * This was a good episode. I had never considered it from the perspective presented in this video, but I like it. * I wish they had continued the concept into other episodes, or even a new series. Yes, I realize that "Lower Decks" is supposed to do this, but (with the caveat that I haven't seen it, only seen clips on YT) it seems more like a comedy than a serious series. I don't know if it would be feasible to do, but I would like a series similar to TNG, that explores social, cultural, and philosophical issues, as well as exploring space and interacting with other cultures, but done more from the perspective of junior personnel, probably even focused more on enlisted than officers. * One thing that actually bugged me about TNG was the heavy focus on senior officers. There was minimal interaction with junior officers, and almost nothing with enlisted (the only enlisted I can ever remember is Obrien). As a kid I didn't know Chiefs were enlisted, so I thought the entire ships crew was officers and the Federation didn't even HAVE enlisted. * Voyager had a similar episode, "Good Shepherd", where Janeway deals with a bunch of troublesome junior personnel.

The Orville is / was a great Star Trek homage with a few sprinkles of parody in. It moved to Hulu because FOX has a TERRIBLE, AWFUL, *nay* ABYSMAL track record of killing off good to great sci - fi / fantasy series. & then there was the pandemic which put things on indefinite hold. I haven't seen " *Seth Trek* ", as some fans refer to it, in about a year on Hulu or more.

Know thy characters: I would pose the thought that we DO know all of those young characters. They are a composite reblend enticing us to reimagine each of of our favorite regulars as they were on the way up the ranks. While they are not pattern fits, their upward struggles are directly in line with (and filling in for us) what we can only image took place for each of the regulars. They allow us to love our regulars as if we had known them even earlier than Far Point Station.

I think Star Trek: Lower Decks is an amazing idea on paper, but that the writers and producers are struggling to figure out what to do with it. There are parts of the show that feel like Star Trek, brief glimpses into what the show could be, but those glimpses are usually overshadowed by crude humor and running gags mostly focused around misandry and the ineptitude of the higher ranks. Given how much time Tindi (the Orion female science officer) spends in the jeffries tubes, and how often Boimler (the token white male, who is usually the subject of the attempts at humor) is seen doing maintenance, that both those officers are actually cadets on their midshipman's cruise. With her well-documented list of insubordination, the only reason I can come up with for why Mariner hasn't been drummed out of Starfleet is that her mother's a Captain and her father's an Admiral - an example of nepotism at it's most destructive, given the amount of things she's allowed to get away with. The only character that actually seems to belong there is Rutherford (the black male cyborg), who seems to be not only good at his job but also openly recognized for it by his superiors.

I think DS9 always did better with their supporting cast. It gets a lot of hate from the stuffed shirt trekkies but it's actually the greatest for showing what Star Fleet would really be like. If you give young people expensive equipment and powerful weapons, then tell them to do missions you will get some really crazy things happening, just like when I was a Cav Scout in the army. It just doesn't make sense in Trek when they send mostly their senior officers on all the missions because you would lose a lot of those officers and the younger ones would never get experience.

Idea baseing a series out of an Excelsior class ship stationed out of a starbase that gos out on border petrol, to check in on a few worlds in near by space. set it during or after DS9 but far enough away from the Dominion war to not be draged into it but regularly inconvinianced by it. also giving the show a larger surounding cast off the ship, add a number of Local anoying Alien races and with standard ship crew number for that class of about 200 reduced dew to other concerns, with the ship and station haveing rotating crew postings, like Dr Crusher leaving for a year in peace time. thay could have entire chunks of the crew leave and return for a few random years. the Enterprise was the A-team this would not even be the Z-team, but Starfleet trying to do the best thay can.

If you compare the Space ships to our navel ships, you will see just how absurd this makes Star Fleet. The only job on the ship that has any importance and ‘can’ be handled by an enlisted person is running the transporter! How totally absurd! In reality the vast majority of the ‘jobs’ or ‘duties’ on the Bridge would be handled by enlisted personnel just as they are on our Navel ships. Who has the wheel, enlisted, who has the communication, enlisted, who is watching the scanners no not the science officer it’s some enlisted guy who spends his eight hour shift mostly right in front of that screen not going on away missions. Oh yea, Away missions! Who does that! The ships Captain, as in Kirk, the XO as in Ricker, no it’s some poor Lt. and a party of enlisted (Marines) men and women! One officer maybe 2, at the most! And never anyone important! Only if it is a FOR SURE PEACEFUL MISSION, or a ceremony, would the Captain or XO go. I know it’s fiction but try to be somewhat real Star Trek.

Ensign Sito made this episode. From Picard testing her with a dressing down, then pumping her up to Worf teaching her a lesson. Never was a superfan of Worf but his part in this episode was great. I cried when Picard addressed the crew at the end of the episode.

Whatever happened to Shannon? I thought she was incredible in this episode. Seems her acting career ended soon after this? What a waste, she had tons of potential. Maybe she didn't enjoy acting/Hollywood anymore? Did she rub (or perhaps refuse to rub) some agent/producer the wrong way?

Why is there no salut in Star Trek? No sign of respect for superior officers.

They (rightly) decided you can show respect without saluting every time you walk past a senior officer.
