Most of the arguments I see against this are essentially "Luffy vs Big Mom would be boring", "I don't want him to beat all the Yonko". Those are personal preferences, but I'm talking about storytelling principles, which is a different discussion. And to anyone saying "then shouldn't Kid be the one to defeat Kaido instead of Luffy?" No, as I clearly explain in the ending section of the video that what matters most is which character's *narrative* has most clearly been shaped around a certain fight, not just "who wants it more". Luffy vs Kaido has far, far more narrative emphasis, focus, and build up around it than Kid vs Kaido, even though Kid does also want to defeat Kaido.

Oda has been very unpredictable recently, and has been straying away from conventional storytelling. The raid should have failed because that would’ve made a more interesting story, however this now seems extremely unlikely given the current circumstances. Similarly, Luffy should’ve fought Big Mom, but it seems that Oda wanted to divert from expectations. At this stage, a Luffy vs. Big Mom fight would just not work in favor of making a better story, even if that’s what we initially expected.

@@yousefabdullah5982 Straying from conventionak storytelling, even if that was truly the case , does not mean it's for the better though. There is a reason some things are being passed down since the early days of storytelling, they work. If you replace the wheels of your car with triangular ones it will surely subvert our expectations but it will hinder the performance of your car as well. Subverting expectations for the sake of it is not good storytelling.

I think Big Mom is a prime example of how much it sucks to be caught up to One Piece. Oda is a master of long-term storytelling. I wouldn’t still be reading if he wasn’t. But when he’s juggling like 30 characters in the same arc, it can be hard to see the big picture week to week and so we end up with a lot of people with headass reactionary takes. Personally, I’m gonna wait until the end of Wano to make a judgement call. I don’t wanna be a part of this whack ass trend of backseat storytelling. Oda, take me where you wanna take me. Then and only then will I decide what worked and what didn’t.

Cool message, but I’m the meantime we are reading weekly and out head is not gonna stop thinking. If u read something and u didn’t like it right away, u can’t just tell your brain to “not make a judgement” cause is a subconscious reaction. One can however stop from perhaps sharing that opinion but even then I don’t think is bad to share your reaction on something regardless of what happens next.

well said, morj is great at breaking down story structure but oda is a master of subversion. If morj was writing one piece it wouldn't be nearly as good as it is, and most of the things he disagrees with are what makes one piece special, or are pay offs for a future we never imagined. his constant attempts to lay a popular thematic structure over one piece kinda drives me crazy.

@@NotSteven01 That's the thing. This reactionary scene is relatively new. People used to just watch/read something, then wait until the next chapter/book/movie/installment to get answers. Even at the turn of the decade the most people did at the time was theorize at forums. Having all these platforms, algorithms, & analytics now means that opinions from loud voices are gonna reach lots of people whether they want to hear it or not. Viewers flock to arguments that appeal to them, and opinions homogenize faster than ever. It's fun being part of a community convo about the latest chapter. It's just that Morj and the others have a stake in talking about current events of pop culture like One Piece. It's their livelihood. It's not the same as just talking about it. Recently Morj started a 2nd channel 'Movie Morj' & GLR has 'Dude in a Room.' They are looking at the future after One Piece. And in a place like YT, they have to keep talking. Not to say it's bad. But that's how it is, and it doesn't change that it can still get annoying at times. It feels like most people in any sort of community just don't sit in the moment of reading/watching, enjoy, then put it down until the next chapter/episode. There's always a theory, analysis, or opinion nowadays. If it weren't for the fact people were making money from all this theory-crafting, it would be an obsession. And to be a fan you can't just talk normally like people used to. You have to be REALLY into it and talk about it all the time. This non-stop conversation has moved the baseline of what it means to be a fan from liking something a lot to eating a huge chunk of your waking hours. This is current mainstream fandom culture. It's rather bizarre when you think about how things were before and how it got here.

My prediction for what's going to happen is. Big Mom ends up leaving due to the arrival of Marines/Zunisha. Luffy defeats Kaido, everything else is resolved in Wano. Strawhats head to Elbaf where they meet Shanks. They have their Davy back fight. It demonstrates that both crews are on equal footing. Luffy returns the Strawhat. Then not only does Big Mom show up but so does Black Beard.(Not necessarily in an alliance) Luffy fights BM and wins however BB defeats/kills Shanks. Luffy takes the Strawhat back and pursues BB to defeat him at Laugh Tale or wherever Oda decides for their fight to take place.

I actually really like that on a first read. Gives a nice "small-scale" battle but with all the remaining big shot pirates involved, sets up luffy to be truly able to 1v1 a yonko (Big Mom), as well shows off the whole crew being able to hold their own in a contest against another yonko crew (Davy Back) and hypes up blackbeard as being someone who maybe reached strength even beyond that of the yonko before him.

Love this idea!! If Luffy beats Big Mom AND Kaido this arc, both emperors would feel weaker. It’s better to have each as the final boss of either Luffy or Kid+Law. Giving BM space on Elbaf (a place in which she has more history with than Wano) would be the best way to have her fight Luffy!

This definitely isn't the end for Big Mom, I think this was just a convenient way to temporarily get her out of the picture, and back with her crew again. the last issue of Shonen Jump's cover stated that Wano's climax was coming; I think things are coming to a peak, and we're about to reach the other side of it. There's always an interim between arcs, and this very well may be headed towards the end of an entire Saga. I think BigMom will either return home to recuperate, or follow the Straw-hats after they Leave Wano (if the next arc is Elbaf then i definitely see the later happening more then the former).

I posted this on Reddit months ago: This is my theory: Kid & Law will land blows that WILL deal damage to Big Mom soon and she will be weakened a BIT. At this point I believe the Big Mom Pirates will come and get her out of there. They won’t return home to WCI though, instead they’ll go to the next closest location which is Elbaf or nearby Elbaf. Big Mom will stay there for a bit to “recover”. At this point, Luffy will arrive to Elbaf and fight Big Mom. I believe she will be defeated on Elbaf since this is where her story started. We then find out the TRUTH of what happened to Mother Caramel and the village kids. This leads into my second theory: To acquire a DF without the fruit itself, you must eat a person’s HEART. I believe that’s how Big Mom acquired her DF powers after eating Mother Caramel and I believe Whitebeard had his heart taken out and eaten when Blackbeard got his powers. I believe Shanks will reveal this later in the story since he buried the body himself. www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/qdbc7w/one_piece_chapter_1029/hhmfmwd/?context=3

If Luffy rises to the top by defeating two of them at the same time, I don't see a feat Kidd can pull of that makes him comparable to Luffy. I think we can agree that although no Yonko has the exact same power as the other, they are roughly comparable to each other. That is my point, there would be no space for a Yonko Kidd if Luffy defeats both Big Mom and Kaido, he would be an complete underdog in this race. While I do believe you're right in saying that big mom needs to be defeated by luffy because of prior narrative setup in the story, your argument against the "theme of the new generation surpassing the old" starts from a logical fallacy. When you put in comparison shanks not fighting/losing to blackbeard/luffy but to uroge, justifying it behind your hyperbolic example of uroge possibly doing it as he follows the theme, you fail to acknowledge how the fight against shanks is a prime example of the "theme of the new generation surpassing the old" as both luffy and blackbeard are members of the new generations. To put it in prospective is like you made an example of how a "rock" cannot possibly be a "rock" while showing another "rock" . Disproving something by highlighting the absurdity of the concept does not work like that.

Now I do not know if he didn't express himself well or straight up botched the example but "disproving by absurdity" is something that comes from mathematics and is used to disprove mathematical hypothesis, as such is not open for interpretation and there ain't two way of using it, that's why I said "logical fallacy", I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiment but the example used is still wrong.

I think your Urouge example is a terrible equivocation. Law and Kidd are really well set up to be just behind Luffy narratively, it's been set up for them to achieve something relatively equal to Luffy for hundreds of chapters as well. Big Mom again coming back for a fight feels repetitive at this point and I wouldn't want it to be a quick fight. She's supposed to be a small step below Kaido it seems to me. I think this encounter is going to lead to a moment of Luffy displaying his lack of fear against her powers and Big Mom bowing out of conflict with him. Not an actual fight. That is to say I don't think there needs to be a fight, just Big Mom admitting that Luffy is stronger than her. She just needs to acknowledge him as on or above her level.
@SrMissileMonkey
@SrMissileMonkey 2 жыл бұрын
Part of me thinks she already does. She does recognize Luffy's strength in some way but that's all thrown out the window temporarily by their animosity towards each other. As in it wouldn't matter that at the least she admits that Luffy is strong, because she wants to kill him regardless. That intent to breast Luffy into submission trumps any acknowledgement of who's stringer because that's drive to overcome. "Who cares if he's stronger, I'll beat his ass anyway." which is very much like Luffy has been *all of One Piece* with every major antagonist in the story. The Urouge example isn't a terrible equivocation so much as its an extreme case of one. Urouge having no narrative setup while Kid and Law do doesn't take from the fact that such a final decision would be detrimental to the story. As in both cases, the one who is shown not to have _as big_ of a buildup to face a character (i.e Law/Kid vs Big Mom) compared to a different one who has (Luffy vs Big Mom) would in fact, be taking away from the expectation that the 2 chars (Luffy and BM) would be facing each other but didn't cause someone else took them out instead (Law/Kid and BM). Urouge is a blatant case, But the results of such a confrontation would be the same as giving Kid/Law the *Final* victory compared to who actually is built up to deliver the final blow. Morj has also mention that a lot of arguments against this (both in the video and the comments) contain "i wouldn't want it" or "it'd be boring" or "repetitive" in them (much like you did here). All are preferences, which are a different discussion entirely. And you're allowed to have them, but that doesn't speak to the likelihood of how certain events will transpire based on the current point of the narrative. As for acknowledgment and just dropping the vendetta? That's not very Big Mom of you to think she's just going to bow out of continuing to hunt down the one that ruined her party, busted her cake, broke her cherished picture, tarnished her image, and escaped her territory _with Poneglyph rubbings on top of that_ That Big Mom. The one who's hunger pangs make her so deadset on an objective she becomes a walking cataclysm. And even when she isn't, she broke an unspoken rule and literally followed Luffy TO Wano just so she could kill him, *That* Big Mom? You'd like a quick fight, or an acknowledgement of strength, it may happen it may not but it's highly unlikely given the characters' temperaments. Both are tenacious, they aren't just gonna sit down and Take an L like that without at least attempting to fight, heck, again, Big Mom *left* her territory personally to fight Luffy. Not sure why all of a sudden she'd just Want to say no after seeing Luffy get a little stronger.
@NKMitch42
@NKMitch42 2 жыл бұрын
@@SrMissileMonkey it would be incredibly redundant now to do a drawn out fight, structurally, that's not preference. A fourth arc with Big Mom menacing the SH is also not a great writing decision, imo. He animosity and final actions don't have to be so cut and dry. Mom also has a calculated side that's risk averse, she sits around for years and years in one spot demanding tribute rather than risking herself. She is tenacious but definitely a character to step aside and wait. That's just as much who she is. Luffy just has to prove he's at the level for her to make that call. Roof Piece may do just that. Kid and Law have narrative reasons to push the Yonko system over, built up over the whole post time skip, just not as in the forefront as Luffy. Law wants to dismantle the systems that allowed his childhood home and his best friend be destroyed. Kid has the same ambition as Luffy. There paths also have to end in confrontations and victory over Yonko in order to satisfy their goals. Big Mom isn't dead or gone, but fighting again in this arc would undo the achievement of Law and Kid. Fighting in yet another Arc would be structurally repetitive with little gain. A haki clash and retreat in the face of greater power by Big Mom satisfies both Luffy's declaration of defeating the Yonko and doesn't diminish the importance of Big Mom's loss to Law and Kid.

Big Mom is definitely not done, but I think a lot of people including myself just want Big Mom out of the story. She has been here far too long and even though she held great narrative importance, many of us jumped on the train to rush her out with the theme of the up and coming new generation of pirates. I'm not a Big Mom hater, but I wonder what Oda has in store for Big Mom as a good portion of the audience finds Big Mom to be an incompetent joke. I also do not see her fighting Luffy 1v1 past this point because it would seem like a regression for Luffy as he would be coming off of a huge victory against Kaido who has significantly better portrayal. The way she has been tossed around I wonder if Luffy finally hammering the nail in her coffin will be as impactful, but I am sure Oda will find a way.

Besides the focus Morj puts on Luffy, there's still some key elements regarding her that hasn't yet been concluded, like the giant and the other cook from her crew witnessing what happened to Mother Caramel and the kids and the subsequent event of BM finding out about it + the significance of Elbaf to her as a character. I know that people don't like when someone assumes that something will happen with such a level of certainty but Elbaf is, if not the direct next, one of the next destinies and BM just has to be involved in one way or another. So my bet is that after Wano she will be even more adamant in her dream of joining every race and in her usual twisted fashion she will try to do so with the giants through force, either by contacting Loki again or some other mean.

I think its quite simple. Luffy is always climbing a Ladder with every fight. In his first fight against a Yonko he obviously needed a lot of help. Because if Oda made Luffy be able to defeat Kaido by himself, not only it wouldnt make sense, but it would mean Luffy has reached the Yonko euqality level too fast. What would be the enormous challenge of the other 3 then? So he takes on Kaido with help, and a lot of it. And at the same time Oda is showing us how two Rookies can't defeat Big Mom but can actually put her in a very tight spot. And these two rookies are "not casually" from the same Generation as Luffy but under him, since they arent the protagonists. So if in this arc Law and Kid can take on Big Mom alone, why wouldnt Luffy be able to 1vs 1 her in the next arc? Oda always sets up future fights so when they arrive we can make sense of them. So my point is that even when Luffy defeats Kaido here in Wano, defeating Big Mom afterwards will be a bigger challenge if he barely receives any help.

I disagree. Yes you could show all the hints of Luffy vs BM setups but that doesn't explain the problem I have with this fight. 1- Luffy is fighting Kaido already and will likely defeat him in the next 10 chapters (The raid won't fail). 2- BM is severely damaged (broken bones, the damage from the nuke...etc) 3- BM and Kaido are on a similar power level. 4- I don't see Luffy beating 2 emperors in the same arc as you suggested at the end of the video, so if Luffy is to beat BM it needs to be in another future arc. 5- BM's character is fleshed out. We already know everything about her (her territory/ crew/ backstory/ personality/ Strength/ DF powers) and I don't think she can add anything to the story anymore 6- Luffy beating Kaido means that he can beat BM so why repeat the fight and prove nothing. 7- no matter how strong Luffy gets in the story I doubt that he will be able to one-shot BM so a future fight between them will take at least 5-10 chapters which will be waste of time (3 months) 8- I don't see how BM can still be relevant in the story and be a threat to the Strawhats after they already took down Kaido. 9- Emperors were never defeated before now, and now she did get defeated and Kaido will fall soon so I don't see Oda showing her getting defeated twice especially since Luffy will never kill a character in the story (so if she is not dead Luffy won't kill her) 10- The argument of "The new generation overcomes the old generation" makes a lot of sense and giving this win to Law and Kidd will keep them on somewhat the same level as Luffy, something Luffy needs moving forward in the story if you want to disagree with me, tell me how do you think BM vs Luffy could happen? (don't tell me the past setups and hints about the fight, I already know them) edit: Luffy doesn't have to do everything in the story. it makes the story dull. it is good to have other characters doing their own thing and getting stronger and achieving their goals and dreams

We already seen all the abilities and what she and her crew can do (and they are definitely weaker than Kaido and his crew ; the hype was real back then since he was considered the stronger at the time, alongside with the superstars), so there's absolutely 0 hype and mystery surrounding her. That alone won't make any sense from a story pov since it is downgrade (the strawhats will probably obliterate big mom and her crew with their newly aquired abilities). Best argument I heard for Kid and Law vs Big Mom beeing the final showdown for Big Mom is that Luffy said to Big Moms face "I came here to kick everybodys ass", yet he let his followers do the job for him (Inu defeating Jack etc.). Meaning Luffy came as the leader of the raid, and everybody that gets defeated here gets defeated by Luffy trough his followers. It would also fit with Kids character development, Kid relying on luffy to defeat Kaido and taking on Big Mom for Luffys sake. Edit: grammar

Though with Law’s backstory him defeating an Admiral makes more sense then a Yonko. I would like it if Kidd could defeat Shanks or ally with Blackbeard and do something to Shanks. Since it was previously stated about his encounter with Shanks. Luffy is my favorite character, but even so I want rival for him. Besides BB no one in his generation is competing with him so far. I understand this is Luffy’s story, but to truly make Luffy a great king, having him have equal rivals and still coming on top makes it all better in my opinion.

We gotta get her motivation on why she wants to be the pirate king and her “true origin” but other than that, i don’t see what else we need from her. When Luffy says he'll beat people, he doesn't always mean 1 v 1. He was literally fine with jumping Kaido 5 v 2 until he discovered advanced conquerers and wanted to test it He had no issues with letting the others fight Big Mom, and I doubt Luffy in his head thought his allies were gonna die fighting Big Mom or lose to her and that he'd fight both her and Kaido Hypothetically, if Kid and Law killed Big Mom, you think Luffy would be mad at them or tell them that he was supposed to be the one to beat her after he beat Kaido? Also, since Law and Kid defeated Big Mom and Luffy will probably defeat Kaido, by the time she fights Luffy, she's not gonna be underestimating the new generation like how her and Kaido did at the start of the Raid etc. She'd most likely fight Luffy as hard as she'd fight Shanks or Whitebeard etc. Luffy and Kaido are having a 'Yonko level' fight right now, but Kaido and Luffy are both having fun/have mutual respect as fighters. A bit late, but while you are 100% right, big mom’s defeat doesn’t need to be in a fight. Big Mom is completely confident that Luffy stands no chance against Kaido. She’s brought this up numerous times and was extremely angry in chapter 1000 when Luffy landed a hit. Even in her fight vs Kidd and Law she 100% believes the fight is over and Kaido won. I believe the whole memory loss thing that nobody liked was to show her getting along with the crew. Even her dreams are at the core "good", but she is going about it in a misguided way. Ive been talking about this for a while now. Luffy said he had to defeat all the Yonko, and he definitely should be the one to do it. The way this arc was turning out, I knew it'd turn out to be a mirror image of Sabaody. Luffy's crew being able to take on a PX by themselves and Law/Kid combined their forces to take down one. The only difference besides leaving their crews out of the main fights, is that Big Mom may wasn't really defeated in the usual way. It was a technical defeat because she was thrown out of the Island, and she will most likely be incapacitated by the explosives she brought with her as she fell. If the same fight had taken place on a non floating Island and with no Island destroying explosives, Big Mom would have been declared the winner for sure. I still think Luffy will fight Big Mom but it will be a very clear victory, unlike Kid and Law.

Because a Yonkou being defeated without death (and without imprisonment like Shichibukai) doesn't mean that they can't still be active pirates or even retain their some or all of their territories. Big Mom can still be active and end up chasing after Luffy for weeks after Wano and finally catch up in Elbaf, blaming her loss to Law and Kidd on Luffy's meddling in her business. Then Luffy will fight Big Mom on more equal footing after having beaten Kaido. Because there's absolutely no way Luffy vs Big Mom can be an uphill battle, like Luffy vs Kaido is currently, AFTER already beating Kaido and officially being on that level.

I see your point, but I've got to disagree. I think that Luffy inadvertently "defeating" Big Mom through raiding with Kid and Law would honestly still suffice. Kid and Law and supposed to be on a similar power level with Luffy narratively, so having those two take down the 2nd biggest threat in the way Zoro normally does still makes for a satisfactory ending to the conflict. After Luffy defeats Kaido, assuming that he does, him taking down Big Mom wouldn't have the impact that it would've before. In fact, I don't even think it would be taken as seriously.

Agree, just because it was suggested something would happen, doesn't mean it has to happen. In fact if I had to assume...I would say not only she was beaten here (not killed, but beaten)... but maybe BB and the WG took the chance since she was out to do some "raid" on whole cake... which would be a nice twist and make sure her fall was complete.... that could also work to make sure she doesn't come back to wano...she may go and try to save what's left of her land. (since I doubt she is the kind to lose and go "GG, I'll leave you be")

I think the key to my denial of this “storytelling need” for Luffy vs BM is at 9:48. Up until WCI, a confrontation with Big Mom was being set up. But WCI was enough to pay off that buildup and Luffy swearing he’ll defeat her on the end of that arc will no longer be relevant once he surpasses her by defeating Kaido. It’s true that Luffy vs Kaido is set up as climax from Act 1, but Big Mom just appears at the end of Act 2 without any buildup for Luffy vs BM (I’d argue she is even treated for what she’s become this arc, a stepping stone/training towards Luffy vs Kaido). In Wano, Luffy will surpass BM and have no further reason to actively start a fight with her. Since turning his attention to Kaido on a personal level at the end of Act 1, Luffy hasn’t shown interest in fighting her personally for even a single panel. If the narrative investment of a storyline drops, there’s no need to force it back up. Storywise, the tension between them paid off in WCI and properly set up the fear for the Yonko’s power. Now we can enjoy the story built for us between Luffy and Kaido and be glad Big Mom (secondary villain this arc) at least got her final boss status with a fight against Kid & Law.

I think Urouge beating Shanks is a bad fit ONLY because it's too realistic for One Piece. We don't know much about Urouge but there's no reason to think he couldn't be as strong or stronger than Law, Kid, and even Luffy. It's only because One Piece is light hearted and willing to lean into "fate" that the protagonist has to be the one to beat all the baddies. Yes, Law & Kid permanently defeating Big Mom would've denied Luffy the opportunity to do it himself but so too does Luffy permanently defeating Kaido deny Law the opportunity. Most of the New World mega saga has focused on Law's plan to defeat Kaido. If he were the protagonist we would expect him to land the final blow. If anything, other characters having awesome feats like these makes the world seem more alive. For example, I'm sure plenty of people expect Blackbeard to be revealed to have done something major in the post Wano news update. I know the story revolves around Luffy but it's not necessarily a bad thing if the world doesn't also.

That's not necessarily a problem. If it's a short arc that wraps up her story and that of her crew (like Pudding, Katakuri, etc) she doesn't need to be an unbeatable obstacle. If anything it would show that post wano that Luffy has moved past the old generation if he beats her straight up without it being portrayed as a huge upset that he wins.

I still read things chapter by chapter as they appear, but the waiting does give the impression of it taking a long time.

Here's the thing, KID was set up to fight and DEFEAT Kaido since the very start of this arc, and has a far more personal reason to take him down than even LUFFY does. For that reason I think him going down to fight Big Mom was incredibly fucking stupid, when he had a more narratively sound reason to fight Kaido than anyone that isn't the Scabbards, who ALSO want to be the ones to kill Kaido. Yet LUFFY is the one to go up and 1v1 him because...plot. Big Mom feels like some level of compensation, so at least Kid and Law would have taken down an Emperor, while Luffy has as well. If it comes to the point where Luffy does 1v1 Big Mom and WINS, that ends up devaluing what Kid and Law did and makes them seem even less like rivals.

THANK YOU. This is why i dont get the appeal for kid. literally only reason he luffy rival and sorta equal is because of plot. but his feats are WORSE THAN LAW, the support character. law outshine kid by a pretty big margin. BUT ppl want to bring up how law is beneath kid on status and put him closer to luffy is because of powerscaling. although nothing support this beside plot, ppl are going to hype kid now. Then law gets disrespected by calling him a support character. although Law had a more impact on the story than kid have so far. the only reason law is devalue is literally cause of powerscalers. However, ppl see that law is doing more damage than Kid in the big mom fight. so they start discrediting law and hyping Kid more than law. Morj literallymade a video saying that Kid going to be a yonko after this acting like he earn it? How is he more worthy than law, given the feat and impact on the story. Cause law can't control luffy? But Kid can't control Luffy. How is this man competing with luffy when HE WENT AFTER BIG MOM WITH LAW. He let luffy fight kaido, like OG comment said Kid have a bigger beef with Kaido and somehow ok with luffy taking him 1v1. People to rationalize it when it happen to save kid image by calling smart. "A basic, universal rule of storytelling in general" is a poor way to frame an argument on literature, just saying. Anyway... It's factual that Big Mom has crossed Luffy's path in the New World, but that was a resource to insert and develop her character in the story (since we follow the SHs, not the other Supernovas), a purpose that was satisfied when we had a chance to see Big Mom in depth in WCI, as well as her territory and her family, and everything about her life as Yonkou. It's done. So when Law and Kid defeat Big Mom, you don't throw WCI and its set up (the snippets in FI/Zou) in the garbage. First because that story stands on its own for all it did for many characters and worldbuilding, and second because Luffy's contingential goals were all accomplished in WCI despite the lack of a standard fight against Big Mom. You see, Luffy doesn't have a vendetta against Big Mom as he continuously ignore her in Wano (instead, she has a vendetta against him), and Luffy doesn't fight for vendettas, but rather to help people. The only remaining reason for Luffy to fight Big Mom is exactly the impersonal purpose of beating the Pirate Establishment (the new generation vs the old generation), which is exactly the same reason for Law and Kid to do it here, while Luffy is already doing his part by beating Kaido. By all means, you can put Big Mom back in the story in Elbaf or wherever just for Luffy to punch her in the face and you'll realize that that will bring absolutely NO pleasure or significance whatsoever in the narrative. It will be just you bureaucratically checking off boxes in your list of "laws of storytelling", which don't exist.

I'm agreeing with this as well. Oda doesn't write One Piece based on an algorithm, and the buildup to the conflict between Big Mon and Luffy feels perfectly executed and resolved during WCI with Sanji returning, Luffy beating Katakuri and the Strawhats being acknowledged by the world as the victors of that conflict. The cast in One Piece is huge, and there are fitting characters to play giant parts in the story, so Luffy doesn't need to beat every powerhouse in combat.

I disagree with the luffy not having a vendetta against big mom. Since fishman island and punk hazard, through the end of wci, luffy clearly plants a goal of wanting to defeat big mom (morj literally shows the panels like a million times). So many times he explicitly says he wants to beat her and oda builds up this relationship between them implying, very DELIBERATELY, that these two will have an important fight in the future. And while i do agree that we shouldn't base it on some kind of "story-telling rule", we can't ignore the fact that oda's placed a very important expectation for the fans that would really go to the trash if it was just used for kid and law. Now this may be a personal preference since we as the fans are the ones who had this expectation, but it's also oda's fault for falsely leading us to that expectation. It's like if instead of luffy, say, cp0 was the one to take down kaido. This would clearly make no sense, and just throw away all the previous build up of wano, and luffy being the core figure to succeed in this long running yonko saga. Now sometimes there could be a plot twist, but there is difference between the two. A plot twist is a pleasant surprise that the reader didn't expect, but it made sense for the story and brought new depth to the plot. However when this plot twist put up so many chapters of CLEAR and DELIBERATE build up for a certain event to just be thrown in the garbage, is not good storytelling, and only checks off the box of "kid and law have a good win, big mom is out of the picture finally".

My theory is as follows: Luffy is known for his ability to make nakama out of anyone and get others to fight on his behalf. Luffy has fought alongside and befriended previous enemies who almost killed him and his crew-- Buggy-Sama, Crocodile, Mr.2, Mr.3, Bellamy, Smoker, the colosseum niggas at Dressroba...He has had 6 shichibukai as allies/helpers (Jinbei, Law, Croc, Snake Queen, Lord Buggy, Kuma) Now he is playing in the Yonkō league. Big Mom in particular has gotten the most character exposition of all the Yonkō, and it's for a reason. She has been shown to have similarities with Mugiwara no Luffy, they both LOVE food and have a particular Dai Kōbutsu(meat for Luffy Oshiruko for Linlin). They both love rare creatures and want the rarest and most diverse of humans and animals as their crewmates.bThey both love O-tama. And they both want to find one piece. Linlin however, is not as close as Luffy is to the One Piece, and eventually she will discover the Straw Hats journey towards Raftel and she will hear their story, probably from Nico Robin. After the huuuggee banquet of course. Big Mom will help chase away the world gov't probably. After listening to them and after eating Sanji's food, she will follow her -belly- heart and join the Mugiwara grand fleet, or become his ally in the final journey to the last islands. This was also why Luffy had to defeat Katakuri and gain his respect: we always knew Kat would end up being an ally to Luffy in the future, this is how. She's going to fall in love with the Mugiwara's. Especially their cook. 😍 They're not going to fight anymore, they're gonna party. I mean it's been kind of established that Big Mom can't be killed, she's nigh impervious from the outside, and she took 2 violent Shock Willes from an Awakened Law and still fell off the floating island, and got blown up by really powerful bombs, but still wil not die. She will protect Nico Robin from CP0 and upon their discussion and her tasting of Sanji's food, she will become a friend of the Straw Hats. So Luffy will have befriended or allied with at least 3 Yonkō out of 5.

I would argue Big Mom’s whole purpose in the story was to indirectly build anticipation for Luffy vs Kaido in Wano by having WCI, a story in which Luffy and an emperor’s forces can clash, but without having Kaido ever lose. This was a good way to portray Kaido as unbeatable to build hype. Now that we’re on Wano, Big Mom is no longer relevant to Luffy on any personal level and she has been literally used as a stepping stone for Luffy to train Ryuo to beat Kaido. She has served her purpose and now she served as a final boss to the supernova who needed some portrayal. I would agree that abandoning that plot thread would be bad storytelling if it were even close to being the main plot, but with the amount of more interesting moving parts in One Piece, I’d argue having Luffy surpass BM by beating Kaido and moving on after she’s defeated by Law and Kid is a good option for the story as a whole, as opposed to forcing this tired plotline to the forefront while basically everyone is interested in only Luffy vs Kaido

Your entire argument is "people dont want to see that" "it wouldnt be cool", just because a powerlevel baby doesnt want to see it doesnt mean you can cut it and ruin the payoff, you are only defending it because its what happened, youd defend the opposite otherwise. Luffy and BM were set up for years and multiple arcs, and their crews have tons of setup interactions too, if they fall like that, now, its because Oda is cutting corners to rush the story, same with her crew being excluded. You dont need to justify everything he does, hes great but has mistakes when writing 1000+ chapters, and BM not having a payoff would be one of them, as their clash with luffy is much more personal than Kaido. Its in no way less important or uninteresting now just because Kaido got focused later, thats you rewriting history to force previous arcs into a changed path.

It rly doesnt need to happen anymore imo. I also think Kaido won't die but will lose in a similar manner to Big Mom, where he can possibly return in the future. Luffy has nothing to prove by defeating Big Mom now.. Luffy even said to Big Mom while he was in her face at the banquet in Kaidos lair that he was there to kick Kaidos ass, Orochis ass, AND Big Moms.. So yes he's said things in the past, but only the most recent matters, not randomly picking and choosing past statements from arcs ago.. There's a reason he made Big Mom an enemy as well in this arc.. To end in 5 or less years we gotta start moving on to Shanks, and Blackbeard, and the One Piece and the "final war" and whatever else Oda wants/needs to do before the end.. I see your point, but I'd argue that the way Big Mom v Luffy is framed implies physically beating her isn't the point of her character. Big Mom's role is less to do with direct narrative importance of a physical defeat and more to do with her symbolic representation of the waning influence of the old pirate order. Big Mom and Luffy have already had 4 physical altercations, three of which were in situations where Luffy had another goal in mind other than just beating her up. 1. Luffy testing his haki to see if it's up to snuff for fighting Kaido 2. Luffy fighting her along with Kaido, with Kaido as his main target. 3.Luffy literally jumping over her so he could get to the roof. The only other time he lays hands on her in a way that breaks this pattern was back in WCI, where I would argue, she was beaten symbolically the first time. Time and time again Big Mom would come up against Luffy and lose a symbolic victory. Now she's come up against his raid and lost a physical victory as well. Comparing Luffy's "rivalry" if you can call it that, with Big Mom with other Villain of the week characters kinda misses the point. In every instance apart from hers, Luffy was attacking an institution specific to that character. Big Mom, on the other hand, shares an institution with the character Luffy is fighting now. To face her in the same way would be redundant because Luffy giving the L to Kaido would be the same as giving the L to the old pirate order who Big Mom is strongly associated with. The reason she made that little speech about Roger was for this purpose. Now if she does come back, she will be at a diminished and angry state, and quickly put down,much like Frieza in Dragon Ball Z, as a symbolic nail in the coffin for the old pirate order. But apart from that, there's no story reason for her to play after this. Just my take.

Okay morj, I find this kinda funny, but you have missed some really basic storytelling concepts. First increasing stakes. Every journey a character goes through has to be bigger than the one before it. Look at classics like lord of the rings. We start with a walk thru the shire and then a hike past demons and then a mine then war then we bring everything back with a hike and a war. Each time the story builds on itself . You can't lower the stakes with important characters, if big mom luffy occurs it must be in a larger stakes battle then the current one which means she can't be more than a secondary conflict within the next larger story. So larger stakes we need to go to world goverment plots and experiments. We still haven't met vegapunk. At this point it kinda makes sense to un mother caramel big mom and resolve her story as part of a clean up of a larger Second, how foreshadowing works. Sorry du but all of the Fishman Island big mom stuff that was foreshadowed is already resolved. You don't always need a literal resolution and sometimes things don't work out the way it seems at first glance they glance. Let's go back to lotr again. We have a huge arragorn vs the ring wraith king set up thru the whole trilogy. How does it end? With a woman and a hobbit arragorn saved who end up being the one who beats him. The big mom take down is similar. Kid and law both want revenge but aren't strong enuf. They don't trust others, it resolves all of their arcs to have them beat someone who isn't the one they wanted revenge on to serve a larger group. Finally none of these rules work the way you, or me thru a lot of this post, make it sound like they do. There's really no such thing as proper or correct story telling, these are all just ways we analyze things we like. It's like music theory. These rules do have effect on stories, but you can't just take a theme out the way you are and analyze it in a vacuum. If you use them to try to predict a story you're using them backwards.

Bigger stakes are not needed. For example Zou and Reverie did not have bigger stakes than the previous arcs... So having a fight between Big Mom and Luffy does not need to have bigger stakes than Wano... This is just a shonen trope that the next enemy has the be more dangerous than the next, but that does not have to be true.

Also... One thing is Luffy beating a Yonko with the help of others... and another is Luffy 1 vs 1 a Yonko alone with only his crewmates. While the stakes are lower, it is harder since it is actually Strawhat pirates 1 vs 1 a Yonko crew

@@andrejosue98 lol Zou and reveriere absolutely have higher stakes. Zou we go from fighting warlords to directly fighting yonko. This isn't power scalling, it doesn't mean luffy has a harder fight every arc. It means the stakes in the story grow. Zou also introduced the road poneglyphs. I shouldn't even have to explain how reverie is setting up an even higher stakes battle than marine Ford or wano. It's directly stated in the story. I'll read ur next post in a sec.

@@andrejosue98 lol more nope. It's not about a 1v1 or power scalling dude. It's about relevance and importance to the story. Unless it somehow sets up a completely unexpected plot turn luffy big mom is done. Have you read spoilers for the week? They seem to imply that the current luffy Kaido battle was foreshadowed ny the Kaido Oden battle. By a morj interpretation these events show luffy failing. By mine the show him surpassing Oden and about to win. Well see what happens in the story.

I don't know. After Kaido, if Luffy beats Big Mom, I think the fight wouldn't have a great impact (I'm talking if the raid doesn't fail). After beating Kaido, it wouldn'T feel as big of an accomplishment of beating Big Mom. I know they are "equal", but Kaido has been depicted as the stronger one and the final boss of the arc. Beating Big Mom after that wouldn't feel like such a big deal. And as you said at the end, I think bringing Big Mom to an other arc after that would be tiresome. I take it as the alliance beating Big Mom so at the end, Luffy's actions still are causing her defeat. While you are right that the animosity between them has been build up in the New World, I'm pretty nobody would say that the link between Luffy and Big Mom is as important as the link with Blackbeard, Shanks or Akainu. Of course, if the raid fail, it would be remove carrying Big Mom to an other arc, but Luffy beating Big Mom AND Kaido in the same arc, probably in the same Wano act after the defeatwould be a bit much I think.

I think a nice way to escalate the combat and show Luffy's improvement would be for him to defeat Kaido now while we know his is tremendously weakened and Luffy has a significant handicap then later defeat Big Mom after they both recover and are at full health. That way it would be after defeating her we can all say he is officially as strong as a Yonko.
@jocoolshow

By that logic, there's no other fight that would have a great impact. As far as we know, there's nobody in the verse that's currently stronger than Kaido to the point where they're on a different tier. Besides Big Mom...Shanks, Mihawk, Blackbeard (currently), all the Admirals etc are either in the same tier as or a tier below Kaido Of course Blackbeard is gonna get stronger or is stronger but we have no proof yet, and Mihawk isn't Luffy's enemy to beat, there's not really anyone in the verse Luffy can fight that has more to their name than Kaido. Even if we say Shanks, as far as we know he's on the same level as Kaido just like Big Mom etc Even if Luffy beats Kaido right now, if it's anything that's close/competitive and not an easy clap for Luffy, it wouldn't mean Luffy is stronger. Kaido been fighting gauntlet matches back to back to back, all getting hit by durability negating attacks which bypass his defenses even since the Scabbards all the way until now, while Luffy only got hit by Apoo and had some scuffle with Ulti and Yamato for a bit before starting a 5 v 2 agaisnt Kaido in which Kaido got hit by 5 different people, 4 which had ways to hurt him, all before Luffy and Kaido had their 1 v 1 start. If Luffy beats Kaido like that, fighting a fresh Big Mom 1 v 1 is a much better

The fact that I strongly believing with this being the best outcome for Big Mom this arc, storywise, doesn’t mean you’re not my favourite youtuber and the one whose content and personality I respect the most. Keep up the great work!!

@@mishell6482 Personally, I think that both of them are strong in their own right, their methods of fighting are quite different though. Kid is the kind of person who is better at striking with pure brute force to overpower his opponents and tanking damage. This obviously has a lessened effect on opponents who are incredibly durable themselves. Law strikes with surgical precision using attacks that damage the internal parts of the body as well as the external. He is not the kind of person to tank attacks however and his powers clearly use up his stamina quickly if he does too much at one time. So, I think that both of them were necessary for this outcome to occur, either of them fighting on their own would have lost. That's simply how I see it, different strengths for different characters. Big Mom could appear in Wano again or she could appear somewhere else later on. One thing that I have noticed is that some commenters don't think she would be much of a challenge after Kaido and his crew. However, in the event she fought them post-Wano (I don't know for sure) then it is likely that rest of her crew would help her to fight. In addition, the world government would likely also include some of their heavy hitters into the fighting as they are doing now. The worst generation is becoming too powerful too quickly for the marines to simply dismiss them now. If they don't succeed at Wano then they will likely take steps to ensure that Luffy and the others die before they become too powerful to stop. Again, just my perspective.

I can’t see Luffy defeating every yonko in the same way I don’t see him defeating every admiral, both said to be his major obstacles before pirate king. It’s true there’s a tremendous amount of build up to Luffy vs Big Mom and promises made by him to do it, but I also think we should consider Oda can change plans at any time. Luffy said he’d beat Jack and yet the two characters never met. Luffy said he will one day return to wci and beat Big Mom to Katakuri’s face but I think we all can’t imagine a wci 2 arc, I’d bet none of us thought she would immediately follow Luffy to Wano either. I think it make more sense if Luffy didn’t get his way all the time, it’s realistic. Just because you plan to do something doesn’t mean it’ll happen, I’m so glad Oda let other characters shine for a moment. What’s the point of these supernovas if only Luffy and crew accomplishes things in the new world?
