Magnus is the best player in the world because he's working with chess knowledge accumulated over hundreds of years. However, he's surely not the GOAT. For me that distinction goes to Fischer and some might argue Kasparov due to longevity. Magnus is fantastic and clear #1 today but he doesn't exhibit the dominance of the likes of Fischer and Kasparov. I would argue Morphy also has a claim to GOAT.
