Incepted in 1959 during the Cold War, the Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicle was Germany's first attempt at creating a high-capacity, heavily armored, yet agile military vehicle. Its primary objective was to support tanks such as the Leopard 1, boasting a similar operational range of around 372 miles (600 km). The Marder was designed to effortlessly transition between combat modes and deliver troops to the battlefield, while providing direct fire support. Additionally, it was fitted with comprehensive nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection, marking its 1971 introduction to the Bundeswehr as a significant milestone in armored warfare history.
The Marder 1A3, an upgrade from its predecessor, features enhanced armor and a more robust suspension system, bolstering survivability and mobility. Its armament includes a 20mm Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh202 automatic cannon with an effective range up to 1.6 miles (2,500 meters) against ground targets, a 7.62mm MG3 machine gun, and a MILAN anti-tank missile system with a range of about 1.9 miles (3,000 meters). Moreover, the 1A3 variant is fitted with smoke grenade dischargers for tactical maneuvers. With these significant improvements, the Marder 1A3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle proves a formidable addition to Ukraine's frontline defenses.

German kit has turned out to be performing even better then the marketing. I expected heavy armour to do good, but AA systems like IRIS-T and Gepard also turned out to be performing extremely well. Same with artillery.

lol... i been in the 1A2, but we got the 1A3 later.... my platoon leader been caught by the local Police, driving 100kph on a public road with a 1A2! the 600hp you have during peace time, the engine is limited to the 600hp, war ready power is 750hp... it takes a little more diesel, but you get a nice boost!

Hi there. The marder 1A3 has three decisive disadvantages. 1. The 20mm cannon and the coax machine gun are not stabilized and can therefore only be used in a stationary vehicle. If the gunner is well trained, firing from very slow speeds is also possible. 2. The Marder does not have a rangefinder. You have to estimate or determine the distances to the opponent and then set them manually. Ok for a defensive battle from positions because you can determine the distances from every position beforehand. However, this is not so suitable for the Ukrainian counteroffensive. A child of the Cold War, the Marder is designed for defense rather than offense. 3. The ready-to-fire ammunition supply of the 20mm cannon is not very high and re-ammunitioning the weapon takes some time. Reloading the machine gun must be done from outside the vehicle. Very disadvantageous in combat. So you have to move to a covered position every time. Greetings from Germany.

I served on one... The Marder is way faster than this video makes out. We drove through the heath at around 45km/h if not more, cutting through shrubs and and mowing down young, 2m high Birch trees like a whirlwind. I'll never forget this ride. Winter was a bitch though, as the heating was always broken.

Ive always liked these old cold war German IFV's. They been around longer than the Bradley and really came at a time when the BMP was the only game in town. Before the Bradley got accepted the program for the US had a contender that looked very much like the Marder. An awesome IFV, Great vid.

The things that it can't penetrate you don't want to fight anyway. 20mm is enough for everything that isn't a MBT. Don't forget that these machines always have to carry the ammunition, with 20mm you have way more shots and you have less weight due to the barrel size that you can use for the armor as example.

Germany is in the process of replacing Marder with Puma. The Good think about Marder is its heavy Armour. BMP are death traps so troops ride on top of them because its safer in case of a mine hit. BMP is worse than a German SdKfz 251 half track from WW2. Marder lacks air conditioning and a gyro stabilized gun. It's a fairly old design. . Even the first 50 CV-90 that Sweden gave to Ukraine lack stabilization.

Interesting presentation, however I am tired of hyperbole "game changer" called out for every and any piece of western equipment. The same was said about the Bradley, and the Leo was expected to "demolish the Russians." The reality is different a bit. Small numbers of vehicles given to Ukraine and the huge delay in decision making to deliver them allowed Russians to deploy vast mine fields, dig in, and they hold the fort. Nothing what Ukrainians have shall be called a Game Changer. We need a reality check because our enemy switched into war economy, and is determined to make any form of sacrifice for their doomed aggression.
