Since its founding, the Marine Corps has emphasized the importance of individual marksmanship. In no sect of the Marine Corps is it emphasized more than among scout snipers.
The first scout snipers saw action in World War II. Back then, the Corps did not have a standard sniper rifle. Shooters wielded a variety of weapons, depending on their individual preferences or simply whatever was available. The majority of them used M1903 Springfield rifles equipped with lengthy, 8-power Unertl scopes.
During the Korean War, scoped M1 Garands were added to the US arsenal and used by US forces, along with the M1903, for long-range shooting. After the war, the Marine Corps decided to invest more money and resources into developing professional marksmen and overhauled its scout sniper program.
In 1961, a new, more challenging course for scout snipers was established in Hawaii. Then, in 1966, the newly trained scout snipers were issued the first standardized sniper rifle: the M40.

Marines love their M-40's. Yes we do. I took my M-40A1 with me to Division Schools Camp Pendleton, Ca. in February of 1988, and lived the "STA Strong. STA Alive" life for the nest 23 years. The A3 and A5 were/are great weapons systems, but the M-40A1 holds a special place in my heart. It was basic with no frills other than it was amazingly accurate. No detectable magazine. No threaded barrel. And a fixed 10x Unertl scope. The M-40 in all of it forms is a great platform.

In Dec. of that year a team of 2112s came from Quantico and replaced all our old broke ass Redfield scopes with the new Unertl patented USMC Scout Sniper scopes on our rifles. There was much rejoicing. That bunch of armorers travels around the world swapping out every scope in the Corps and were finished by Christmas. I think. I forget shit now. Don't judge me.

They changed the TO&E to remove the sniper from its place as a battalion asset. Allegedly the rifles will still be available & snipers themselves will still be around but in a different capacity. The Corps believes that small drones will be capable of doing the vast majority of scouting missions since that is their primary purpose. Many of the scout snipers will move to the Recon companies, especially if they’re already qualified. From the outside looking in (Army MP) I’m looking at the decisions being made by Comandant Berger and just flabbergasted. Some seem super obvious, but others are optimistic at best.

I trained with m40A1 while active duty in Hawaii. Point of aim, point of impact! The scout sniper school was extremely challenging. Shooting that weapon without wearing the shooter vest, is a big mistake! Even wearing it, you get brushed up. I remember range control had close one road that took you to officer base housing. The range was for the M16A2 for 500 yds. So we are basically shooting beyond the range itself. While on the big island we would set up a range at the live fire range there. 1,000 yds no problem what so ever. Shooting 8" paper plates, and hitting dead center, sometime 1/2"- 3/4" from dead center! We shoot match grade smokeless powder. Moving targets were the most challenging, we used old m151 jeep being pulled with a high speed winch . The dummy targets were man sized. Our mission was to shoot base of skull hits. Needless to say, we had to repair dummy throughout day. Night shooting using night vision (nod) was not only fun, but a confidence builder! Back then we were two man teams, a spotter and shooter. I was told the weapon starts out with a Remington 700. Then the Marine gun Smith in Quantico does his magic with two part's of other weapons, performs the machining. I know they get rid of the wooden stock. All stocks were fiber glass. I know the Barrell was hand floated to perfection. We never carried the weapon by the Barrell. The weapon is heavy, and kicks, and is loud! The sniper class started with about 45 Marines. After 90 days there were 6 of us standing there! I had been eaten by bugs ants, even a snake slithered around my shooting nest! Try peeing or craping laying in the prone position! Most that failed just did not have the self discipline to be motionless, while your instructor is staring in your position with $1,000 binos. Looking for movement, weapon glare, or body identification! Reach out and touch someone! Semper Fi!

Because a 300 Norma magnum has more than twice the range of the M40. The full up deployment kit for the Mk22 includes the ability to change calibers in the field by simply switching a barrel and bolt head. The Mk22 system can be configured to fire the 338 Lapua, the 300 Norma magnum, and the 7.62 NATO on the fly as the mission dictates. The M40 can't do that. As great as the M40 system was, its time for a 21st century system.

The Remington 700 is probably the most simple and super effective platform for a true “ sniper”? grade rifle. It doesn’t take that much customization at all. Slap on a quality scope and it’s done. Except for extremely precise action tooling ( may be needed?) nearly all the other modifications can be done at home. The older 700’s have adjustable triggers ( Remington doesn’t want you messing with lol) which CAN BE dialed down to about whatever pounds or ounces u desire. It ain’t rocket science folks. I have several in different calibers set up for different applications. Varmint, deer etc and LR paper. All these are off the shelf models modified by me. Using home custom ammo worked up over weeks/months for each these rifles are extremely accurate. All are paper shot sub MOA. The larger calibers to 1000 yards.

So I was thinking about this the other night, but wouldn’t it better to have at least 2 different sniper rifles for the marines? In my inexpert opinion, I believe that would keep the enemy guessing on one hand, or on the other, you could lull them into a false sense of safety by letting them think they are out of range from one sniper, while another one gets the drop on them from a further distance. They wouldn’t know for sure what rifle they were up against, until it was too late. Obviously for this strategy to be effective, the longer range rifle would have to be less deployed, and given to only the absolute best in the core.

NO THEY DIDN'T! Per the Marine Corps Times "...After fiscal year 2024, which ends in fall of that year, there won’t be any seats in the Scout Sniper Basic Course, according to the Plans, Policies and Operations email. The Marine Corps will still train snipers through the Reconnaissance Training Center and the Marine Raider Training Center, the message stated..." "...Marine snipers will bear a new 0322 military occupational specialty, designating reconnaissance snipers, rather than 0317; 0321 is the military occupational specialty for reconnaissance Marines..." Snipers aren't going anyway. The task and organization table is just changing. Snipers will now be in recon battalions. The new Scout platoons will be in infantry battalions.

The Army and Marine Corps REALLY need to get together and stop wasting money. M40 for the Marines, while it's M24 for the Army. Both of which are Remington 700 Bolt-Gun Systems chambering 7.62 NATO. The Marines' M40 will be replaced by the MK 13, while the ARMY will replace it's M24's with the M2010....AGAIN, both the MK 13 and the M2010 are Long Action Remington 700 Bolt-Gun systems, this time, in modular/tactical Chassis setups, both chambered in .300 Win Mag. I wonder what name/monikers the Navy, Space Force, State/National Guards, Air Force and Coast Guard have for their nearly identical Remington 700 based setups in 7.62 NATO and .300 Win Mag ? Situations such as THIS could almost be a MEME, if it wasn't so serious. Bureaucracy at it's best. Pretty much common play in the forces as it seems needing to only look back to the Aardvark and TomCat fiasco between the Air Force and Navy.

Why on Earth a modern military unit would still use a bolt action rifle ... even for sniping, when new AR10 or FN SCAR are now accurate, have higher mag capacity and shoots way faster ... ???

The Marine Scout Sniper program is ended? Whut?? Seriously? The last wars could not crank out enough personnel to fullfill the task at hand and now they are abolishing it? What is the logic behind that?

After a war the first thing to go is the sniper program. People get discharged and "tribal knowledge" is lost. When a new war breaks out, they have to start over with instructors who are still in the Service. That's a bad way to operate a Military.

The M40 is a great sniper rifle, but is by no mean the best sniper rifle. The best sniper rifle is,... The one that just hit and took out the target you shot.

The Mk22 switch barrel system is a much more flexible platform. The M22 can fire the 308W, the 300 norma magnum, and the 338 norma magnum, by switching the barrel and bolt head in the field. The M40 can't be re-barreled on the fly in the field. The M40 can't keep a 300 grain bullet supersonic at 2000 yards. The M40 was the best of its time. The M40 will soon be enjoying a well deserved retirement. It will be shooting for fun and sport at the vintage sniper matches. Its deployment days are numbered and rightly so.

I believe Carlos Hathcock used a Winchester M70 with an Unertl target scope. The Win 70 was a bolt action hunting rifle, nearly identical to the M40 Remington. Anyone who is certain otherwise please speak up.
