@@delbrett2257 No. One can't sign up for Medicare until age 65. I turn 65 in Sept2024 and my Medicare Part A & B will cost me about $350/month plus what coverage & cost I select for prescription medications and in addition, if I want to add coverage to cover the "gaps" in Medicare ($50 to $200 per month depending on where you live and what you select). Also, from what I understand, one has to sign up for Medicare at age 65 (plus/minus 3 months) to be accepted automatically. Otherwise, if one delays, there is a 10% per year delayed penalty for life and the likelihood that one will have to go through medical underwriting (i.e. health check) evaluation before knowing if one got accepted into Medicare. It really sucks to get stuck with the penalties and medical underwriting later just because I plan to initially retire living overseas (with local insurance in that country) for 5 years or more before deciding if I should move back to America due to "old age" complications that make living overseas difficult.

Paul ...I spent almost 2 decades in Thailand. Health care there was by far the best of any place in the world and I've traveled extensively. Not expensive, most of the doctors I saw were American educated, my waiting time to see a rural doctor was no more then 1/2 hour. They "listened" to the patient which is a novelty. In the states now for 2 years and can't even see a doctor nor get any health care. Thanks for the video and the info. Best wishes.

I have been living in Thailand for 14 years. Most of the doctors in Thailand have not been American educated. Some in Bangkok and other major centres perhaps. Some of the doctors in the provinces are terrible and are full of bull. I have had a few medical problems, also in hospital a few times. In saying that. There some excellent doctors as well. But you have to look for them. Many Thai who have trained in Thailand do not come up to anywhere the standard of western trained doctors. And that is a fact. The nurses in Thailand. While perhaps not as highly trained as there western counter parts. Are excellent. It is easy to see a doctor here . And admittance to hospitals is quick. and if one is thinking of serious major surgery. I highly recommend majors cities like Bangkok.

Excellent Paul and Mae!! We’ve never had a an issue with the care provided, but getting admitted was our issue. Vicky had a bacterial infection on her brain, she had the moneys in her account, but couldn’t remember her pin #. So me being here in the states, I ask the clerk if she would take my CC, she replied no, because I wasn’t there in person. Then I suggested to use Vicky’s bank card as credit, the clerks reply was, if she’s not in the right frame of mind to remember her pin#, then she’s not in the right frame of mind to authorize the usage of her card. I was livid, she’s the patient, do you want payment or not. Bottom line, I was able to transfer the moneys to her sister for cash pickup, then she was admitted after about 8hrs. And yes Vicky has Phil health as well.

Another issue here in the states is Dental, Medicare doesn't help with that, so I ended up going to Mexico, not a fun experience but very much cheaper, I did save over $20,000 by going there because I was needing a bunch of crowns. Now I most likely would have saved more in the Philippines but that plane ride wasn't something I would look forward too coming from Michigan

Went to Silliman Medical recently. Took 3.5 hours to see a doctor. Once I was called from the waiting area into the doctor's office, I found myself in a 15' x 15' inner waiting area with nine sick people where I had to wait an hour. Made multiple trips back and forth between the lab area and the payment desk before I could get labs done. On the way out, I saw multiple sick people laying on gurneys outside the hospital in front of the emergency entrance. I would be very afraid of becoming seriously ill in Dumaguete.

I’m conflicted with living in the Philippines. Love the country and roll the dice on healthcare or just visit now and then and keep my ass in the USA? I’m still not sure. Healthcare in the USA can also be a nightmare especially for someone with low health literacy, but the quality is unparalleled, especially emergency services. I did obtained care at Salman University center (after a prolonged wait) for a sprained ankle after falling off a motorcycle, and the orthopedic surgeon was fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable. The whole experience including consultation, X-RAY and MRI cost me $170. Not shabby at all, but the long wait to see the doctor wasn’t pleasant. And moreover I take high end medicines here in the USA they’ve never heard of in the Phillies. As an MD myself, it’s really more risky out there but life itself is a risky venture. I might just roll the dice 😂
@waterbug1135
@waterbug1135 7 ай бұрын
Yes, that's my impression too. In the US it's the wait that could kill you. And many men are especially not keen to wait or deal with the maze of complexity. So sure medical care in the US is great IF you can get in and persevere all the barriers to reach that one doctor who understands your issue. For example I was living with a woman who developed sudden and severe abdominal pain. In the ER for 3 hours, many tests. Then a shift change and the next ER doctor diagnosed gallbladder stones. Bought in a doctor who did lots of gallbladder surgeries and problem solved. All doctors seem to be specialists in a few areas. The system for diagnosing is the problem. What attracts me to SE Asia is doctors are as good as in the US but I can get into to see a specialist in a few hours, a day or two. And the doctor will spend time with a patient. In the US doctors are almost always on a clock...7 minutes to get the patient out. The danger is the doctor is under pressure to diagnose and stay with that diagnosis. On cost...I get free healthcare vs Medicaid. I went to the ER for a problem that turned out not to be a problem at all. After a 3 hour wait I saw a doctor for literally 3 minutes which imo was the right amount of time as I was just looking for a professional opinion on whether this was an issue or not. 2 weeks later I get a letter in the mail that I owe that doctor $450 because he wasn't associated with the hospital or something that I didn't understand. No one of course told me ahead of time..."Do you want to see this doctor for $450?" You get no choice at all in how much you will be charged in the US. If a doctor wants to charge you $10,000 for applying a bandage they can and you're responsible to pay it. I like the system in SE Asia much better where costs are much more up front.
@jacked6
@jacked6 7 ай бұрын
@@waterbug1135you get what you pay for. If you're old enough to get subsidized healthcare then just stay in US and make frequent trips to Asia. Health is something you should never cheap out on. Waiting times are an issue anywhere

Paul can you clarify what you said about having the same coverage as baby Mae? While the citizens coverage covers operations, I don't believe expats are covered for operations. I know a expat that paid his 200k hospital bill and philhealth paid a measly 8k. Philhealth cost 17-18k yearly for the expats so it seems that philhealth paying 8k on a 200k bill is very insufficient when your paying 17-18k a year. By the way, good video. 😊

I want to set the record straight. I did my undergrad at the University of Indiana. I wanted to do further education at Notre Dame but I couldn’t afford it. They wanted $60,000 US per year. So I talked to the Navy recruiting office and they agreed to pay my university costs at Notre Dame if I gave the Navy 4 years. So at the U.S. Navy’s expense, I completed my Masters and PHD at Notre Dame. I then entered the Navy and completed 4 years service. In the Navy, I worked in the area of hospital health care administration. I was 30 when I left the Navy and walked straight into a hospital CEO job in Chicago. From there I spent 25 years working as a hospital CEO and President in places like India, Hong Kong, Bangkok (2 different stints over 6 years), Manila (2 years) and Phnom Penh. I finished up my career in Dubai and retired from there in September 2022 (my Filipino girlfriend Sheila is still there as she works as a police officer there and has done so for 6 years). My next hospital posting after Chicago was in 2008 to a hospital in Cambodia. I was offered Jersey City and Cambodia. When I arrived in Cambodia in 2008, there was only 4 paved roads. Somehow in the late 1990’s, I also first visited Cambodia. At that time there were only 2 paved roads. I spent one year there then. Also, somehow despite being in Cambodia, I still managed in the 6 years up to 2010 to work as hospital CEO and President at a hospital in Bangkok (before transferring to Hua Hin). I earned $500,000 US for this and my apartment was 1,200 square feet and only cost $300 which my employer paid for. I get confused about this but the hospital had between 16,000 and 100,000 employees. Between 2008 and 2010, there was political unrest between the redshirts and the yellowshirts. Supporters of the military blocked access to the hospital and demanded money from people trying to enter the hospital. I arranged that over $1,000,000 was paid to allow people to enter the hospital. Then a reporter from the Bangkok Post came to see me. I expressed my frustrations to them. Then the next day, I was featured in a front page article in the Bangkok Post. As a result of this I was arrested and taken to jail. I had never had so much as a parking ticket before this. I was initially put into a cell with about 40 others. I still don’t mind pooping in a bucket because of this experience. I was then put in a cell with a notorious Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout (even though I know him personally, I pronounce his name as ‘bowt’ when everyone else, including him, pronounces it ‘boot’). Vicktor is known as the Merchant of Death. I spent 21 or 22 days total in the Thai prison and in that time I went from weighing 240 pounds to 182 pounds. I wouldn’t have minded the diet of rice and cucumber soup but I hate cucumbers. The US Government then arranged my release and a one-day visa for Cambodia. After travelling from Survarnabhumi to Phnom Penh, I returned to the US where the first thing I did was eat some Taco Bell. The Thai government blacklisted me from visiting Thailand but this was lifted after several years and I have returned several times since. After my Taco Bell, I didn’t stay long in the US as I had a hospital CEO placement at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong. I was in Hong Kong from 2010 to 2012. I had a car there but could only drive it to work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays due to the vehicle having red registration plates. I had to catch public transport the other days. Parking fees were more per month than my condo cost me when I lived in Dumaguete. I get a bit confused but when I lived in Hong Kong, I either had a 250 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $4,000 US per month or a 376 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $3,000 per month. During the 2012 to 2022 year period, I worked in the other places I have earlier mentioned. I also visited mainland China on and off for 6 years. In 2021, I spent 9 months in Cambodia, 2 in Phnom Penh and 7 in Siem Reap. I bought a Honda CRV when I was there which I had to get the windows tinted to the darkest tint as I kept getting targeted in a made up offence scam by the corrupt Cambodian Police. My fluent Khmer was of no use when trying to get out of paying the police fines. I only lost a few hundred bucks when I sold that Honda. I still have a car stashed away in Dumaguete which I will have to deal with upon my return to the Philippines. That will be after the college football season. I think the Crimson Tide are back and a sure thing.

They have suffered a lot of natural disasters lately, with cyclones that ravaged the islands. Places that were not supposed to get hit, were torn apart. It costs tons of money for just recovery. Very little money if left over for progress if you get so many major storms hit like they did. They are resilient people but it does not mean it does not take a toll on their financial budget. I worry for the PI as these storms are getting wilder and more frequent. I know because I live in hurricane alley in the US. We practice disease prevention before it happen. Insurance is there to help . In America insurance is needed as well. Do not be reckless but any other preventable diseases Philippines is not bad. Nothing is cheap if the intervention is major just need to prepare for it. Specially for Expat do not come to Philippines unprepared with your medical needs regular check up is the key.!

I've heard horrors about emergency medical aid in the US where the hospital bills the patient 10s of 1,000s of dollars. I don't know how common that it, but it's scary to get sick in the US without insurance.

Insurance? I'm on Medicaid so $0 cost, $0 deductible, $0 copay. Pretty good insurance imo. I went to the ER for a something I wasn't sure was really bad or no big deal. Was mainly wanting a professional opinion on which. Saw a doctor for 3 minutes, never touched me, and his opinion was no big deal and I agreed. Thanks. 2 weeks later I get a bill for $450 from the doctor. I don't really understand it but that particular doctor didn't accept my insurance. The hospital accepted my insurance but apparently there are people working inside hospitals playing their own games. No one will disclose any of this to patients. You have absolutely no control over what will be covered or not covered once you're in a hospital. So imo insurance in the US is a guarantee. In fact it seems more misleading than helpful.

@@tombkk1322 In life we have to organize our lives in so many ways and if you are lucky enough to work for a company who provides good health insurance with a monthly fee, all is well. Even better, when you retire you have health insurance for the rest of your life at a small monthly cost. It is all about taking care of you and your future and when you decide to include a significant, both need to work out a plan for both and any extended family.

In PH, non-public hospitals are usually owned by groups of doctors. They may or may not have state of the art diagnostic equipment like CAT scan machines or MRI machines, let alone more advanced medical technology; but more importantly, these doctors have far less experience using advanced technology because their patients cannot afford it anyway. Basic medical testing is available, but once a doctor recommends a test, it is up to you to obtain that test, and return to the doctor with the test results. Best advice for US visitors in the Philippines: Plan for an emergency by preparing a medical 'bug-out' bag, with your medications, medical history, and personal identification/documents/US consulate phone #. When being treated, carefully observe the medical supplies used by nurses/doctors. Consider speaking with your US based doctor for a second opinion. This is based on my own experiences in the Philippines. The risk to your life/health increases exponentially as you travel outside larger cities into the provinces.

One perspective on 'Health Care' in the Philippines,Especially if you live in the Province as i do (Cebu). Ive had excellent medical attention,Then its also swung the other way. 1yr or so ago,I had a bad motorcycle accident at a town called 'Tambongon' i was running around 40-45mph and some guy pulled out in front of me and i hit him..HARD! I was thrown from the bike and ended up knocked out cold in the middle of the road,I dont know how long i was out but when i woke up i had dislocated my shoulder,split open both elbows,road rash all over my arms and torso right down to muscle in some areas,Broke several fingers and 1 toe. Anyway..the ambulance showed up..and it was a part-time ambulance/highway dept van..several tools,fire extinguisher,shovels,...no medical equipment at all..nobody checked me over or looked for 'shock' tried to stop bleeding etc. It was very unnerving to come to the realization that had my body bled out anymore i would have died on the way to the hospital in Bogo (25mi away) i did my own first-aid..and thats ok...i got to the hospital they did x-rays with a machine from 1960,did my stitches (19) on my elbows and patched up my road rash. I was basically 'ok'..the Doctor&staff to their credit were great..not much equipment and resources to work with but they did very good. I tell anyone this because they must be cognizant of the fact that Emergency Services in the Provinces is scant,understaffed and not exactly in a hurry...and the Ambulance drivers may or may not have any first-aid training. Living in the province you must decide if you are willing to run the risk of no treatment in a timely manner for a motorcycle accident,serious injury,heart attack,stroke etc. Im 56yrs old,ive already had severe spine and neck injuries/surgeries while in the Navy..im EXTREMELY LUCKY i didnt make those worse or become paralyzed...at this point im realtively healthy,no meds,no diabetes,heart conditions etc....but my accident was a sobering moment. I love the Province and i hate the city..ANY city anywhere..BUT i am basically beyond middle-aged..not yet ancient but that is fast approaching and i must consider moving back to Mandaue closer to more equipped and prepared hospitals than the province for health care/treatment as i get older

Sobering reality check. If you need/want to be near a good healthcare facility in the Philippines, you should be living in Cebu or Manila. However, when you research the current cost of living for those areas, you can spend roughly the same amount in many areas of Thailand and be in close proximity to what is arguably far better medical services. Something to consider if you have medical conditions that require periodic management/assessment with a doctor.

All of my previous plans are kept up to date as I develop additional destinations. I'm also thinking about the "Failure Modes" I've observed & Recovery from them. As with most things in the Philippines you’ll be fine as long as you have money and know a few people to smooth things out. A non resident Filipino friend walked into the ER of a private hospital in Manila with suspected appendicitis. Was asked for USD1500 deposit prior to admission. If you need hemodialysis it will cost USD450-1200 per month. Should you come down with a serious illness like colon cancer prepared USD50,000 for pre and post operative care at a top hospital.

oh man, so shocking!! What is one to do then? so damn scary...... I imagine they have to tell their own people in the PI with no money, to go home and die. I don't think it was personal against you. Such is life in the PI. A lot of poor folk suffer a lot. I just watched a YT 'Short' of a family in the PI living over the the graves in a cemetery. The tombs were three or four bodies high, and these folk live on top of them. They have to climb a ladder to get to the top, passing up disintegrating tombs with caskets and remains that are visible. I hadn't seen that part of the PI as all the travel YT vloggers focused on the best tourist spots. It was SAS to see families live like that in the PI. So, their own people are suffering and I am sure that even if it is a treatable illness, they are sent home to die, if they don't have the money to pay for it. We folks in the US have it so good, we have no clue. That is why thousands and thousands pass through our Southern border here in the US. And they will start to use the medical system meaning it will get worse for all of us..I am not against immigration but there should be limits. It is amazing that one man, the President, has so much power in the US.

Butt headed bureaucrats within the medical community seem to exist to make our lives harder. I am a prime candidate for a heart attack, so I take aspirin regularly to help get rid of/break down the fats that clog our arteries. Due to my diet [I'm down 30 lbs.] it became a real concern. Doctors and hospitals get busy, especially when their bureaucrats are incompetent, so it is important to know a good place to get medical care. Thanks for the information!

My name is Thomas, Great to see you guys, long time subscriber and follower, but i need to correct one fact you mentioned and i wish you could correct this fact on your channel, with the notion that Canada has free health care, i am a born Canadian and health care is not free, it is paid with the enormous amount taxes upwards to 60 percent and the health care here is going south, wait times are one the worst of G-seven countries and getting worst, infact you can die in the hallway waiting for surgery. Please reintroduce this comment, love you guys, God Bless.. Thomas

Well, OK, but when considering the experiences of others I have to consider the person having the experience. There are many people who say "this is a great doctor" only because the doctor is telling them what the person wants to hear.

I have heard that even if you have had a heart attack or cancer or a surgical procedure that most doctors don't believe in giving out Narcotic pain medicine. I hear their are countless Filipinos suffering because of a lack of compassion by the Filipino Government!?? Is this true??

My late husband used to travel back in States if he needs surgery and some medical check up simple solution if you dont trust the medical system in the country where you live at, i found out in philhealth foriegners can apply if they have residency here in PH, IF married your wife can cover you as her beneficiary.

This is why I plan to live in BGC when I get to the Philippines and travel out from there as I can to visit other places and countries. Saint Luke's hospital is very well known and considered the best in the Philippines and is located in BGC.

For those who swear Health Care in the US is the best. Wait till you get to Medicare age. I'm 69 on Diabetes and BP meds. It's been a nightmare. My costs for medications are ridiculous. First Rx in January I'm already on " doughnut hole". I have to spend out of pocket over $7K in 1 year. My Victoza $600 per Rx. Janumet $503 etc. Sometimes I don't pick my RX up.😢😢

@@jacked6 The Philippines is not the USA or Japan nor Singapore. Don't go to the Philippines expecting becauseat this point they are lacking in infrastructure and money. I'm confident it will not be for long. There are now more working middle class closing the gap. Oh by the way any of you complaining expats contributed into the Philippine economy by paying taxes during your working years? What I can tell you is that Filipino health care professionals are more skilled than many of their counterparts; they don't have all the bells and whistles of diagnostic equipment like MRI, CT scan etc. They diagnose based on their skills and experience.

Do they have more cases of Diabetes. And wash rice several times to remove starch? would like to visit Philippines. My mother brother (my uncle) buried Americans Cemetery Manila. Killed Santo Thomas
