My Alakazam has been with me since day 1, I miss him a lot, and as cheesy as it sounds, I believe the canon about “bonds” and their role in the transformation. And also the multiple spoons thing was really cool.

Well tbh I really like mega evolution it’s my favorite mechanic ever...but! I didn’t play competitive seriously until this gen so I can’t really judge weather or not it was good for the meta. So I really like megas I thought the idea was great for making not very good Pokémon actually quite good but I do see why it might seem stale.

I'm also a singles player and I agree. I'd actually argue that Megas are healthier for Pokémon that Z-moves and Dynamax. This is because by looking at your opponents team you're capable of telling what Pokémon your opponent would likely Mega, they didn't have the unpredictability of an item, and the 100 stat point increase most of the time weren't completely going towards necessary stats. The biggest thing of all imo is that these megas were their own Pokémon, regardless of if they are too strong or too weak. Which makes it unfair to completely eliminate them from the game because if something ever is too overly centralizing then it can become banned.

Fully agree. Megas really aren’t unhealthy at all in singles and I personally miss them a lot. Even gen 7 not adding any new ones was very disappointing

@@nero9506 keep in mind that the stats don't all go to the correct stats, an example being Mega Garchomp's, 40 point increase in the special attack that it doesn't care about and 10 point decrease in speed that it hates meaning that it only receives 70 useful stat points

I would say that most mega evolutions are a pokemon that was unviable in vgc before mega evolution. Even one of the most dominant ones, Kangaskhan, was an absolute nobody in vgc before mega evolution, or charizard who I don't remember ever seeing in high level vgc matches before. So to say they gave "a lot of megas to the completely wrong pokemon" seems incorrect to me. Even pokemon that had high base stats, like tyrannitar, weren't some oppressive giant. I think Salamence and maybe metagross are actually the only megas that falls in your criteria here, so I feel that the problem, if there was one, has to be something different

Exactly. I love Salamence as a mon, but Pidgeot is another great example that deserved the buff but gets completely outclassed by it. Also more personally, I don't particularly find Megamence that interesting design-wise.

@@plutigvid Back when megas where introduced i only really played singles so i was talking more about singles viable pokemon such as gengar, alakazam, garchomp, lucario, metagross ect reciving megas when they didnt really need them. I didnt play vgc much in sun and moon either and i just wish in general that megas where balenced with eachother better than they where. Ultimatly if done corectly megas should of been only given to pokemon that where usless without it to enable more mons to stand a chance in the meta unlike with dynamax with it benifitly pokemon in the same way meaning weak mons are gonna still be outclased

I liked Megas in XY, where it was updating fan-favorites in terms of their designs & how they play. Charizard & Mawile were the big winners & are the best examples of how cool it can be. But oras pushed it too far, giving it to things that didn't need it (in terms of design & power) like Salamence & Metagross. If they brought back SELECT megas into SwSh, I'd be okay with that.

I have no idea why people complain that much about the megas. Granted some of them were too good for some formats, like mega Kanga. But so was Talonflame, Heatran or Incineroar, and I don't see people complaining about fire types being broken. My only problem with megas was that some pokemon got them but clearly didn't need them, like mega Garchomp or mega Rayquaza. I'd myself would rather see mega Lumineon than two different megas for Mewtwo. But they were pretty balanced, especially in singles. You could pretty much guess from team preview what pokemon will be a mega, you could have only one mega and they couldn't hold item. Also they gave legitimate niche to some awful pokemon. I'd rather have that than three turn pokemon, any pokemon in the team, that can hold item, with double the HP, with three Z-moves that goes through protect, and that you can't tornment/roar/encore/disable. I get that in doubles dyna maybe isn't that bad. But in literally any other format it is so snowbally and so broken... and even in doubles... let's put it this way, I've never seen people running aerial ace on pokemon without STAB on it till now

I hate how using lopunny in platinum or black 2 is so much worse than in oras, and the mega evolution is just so good on it.

Switching swampert on giga drain( this happened twice to me) Tornadus nature power under electric terrain. Hpice on landorus. Grass knot on Kyogre. Switching scarf Koko's volt switches. Also side note if Dragonite dragon dances on sceptile mega he still dies multiscale will save him first time but even +1 speed doesn't outspeed and extreme speed doesn't kill.

And please stop saying that mega swampert and mega Blaziken are top tier. Mega swampert can do nothing outside of rain even in rain it sometimes struggles to beat bulky grass types and sun kills it. While mega Blaziken suffers from the 4move syndroms it wants to run swords dance, flare blitz, high jump kick, protect, stone edge, and knock off all at once but can't. While in VGC sceptile might be just the best of the bunch by not having a huge movepool but versatile enough to do wonders.

Well, I totally see Mega Khan as a threat but I never had problem to counter it with many pokes in my team: Landorus-T, Rotom-W with will-o-wisp, Sableye prankster, good priority moves user as Ash-Greninja, Azumarill, Scizor/Mega Scizor, Intimidaters... I think it can centralize the meta a little but because the lazy players is going to use the obvious anyway. But the experts use the surprise effects get more far with something unexpected!

Sun is pretty powerful, but it wasn't entirely ridiculous. Gen 8 life orb Ninetales' weather ball is almost as powerful as Gen 7 Charizard Y's flamethrower (with specs being more powerful), and Ninetales is figuratively entirely unseen.

The real comparison would be how strong zard Y is vs its checks/counters compared to gmax zard.

Charizard Y was the best sun setter and it miss a lot to sun teams. But personally I think Zard X better. I could reach 1820 ladder in USUM with mega X running the surprise thunderpunch! A miss Megas so much...

It's not _that_ hard to think of ways to balance all 3. You can make Dynamaxing and Mega-Evo lock the other one out, so you can only do one or the other once per battle. Without changing how Z-moves work, megas wouldn't be capable of using them and they're single-use only to begin with. One way to balance the high power of Z-moves would be to add recoil to all of the damage dealing ones. A thought I had a while ago when thinking about having a game with all 3 would be to lock Z-moves to megas but the use of a Z-move would cause the mega to revert to base form (without allowing for subsequent mega-evo). But I'm also not much of a competitive player beyond local matches with friends, so I'm not sure how actually viable any of this would be.

I think it's because dmax has just been healthier for the competitive doubles scene unlike megas and z moves I mean there's a lot of creative things you can do with them and they're not insanely op due to only lasting 3 turns and both players get it

Unless they've released more info I was unaware of, Ive been dealing with Covid type nonsense for the past 2 months so I'm in the dark regarding DLC leaks. I didn't want to get super long winded so I just used theorycrafting to sort of lump my thoughts into one broad bubble. I don't think all of them will be good, but I feel a few of the lesser used ones can possibly appear as a strong counter or find a pretty decent [or be taken into heavy consideration] when team building is regarded.

The problem is that even if you increase a single stat by "only" 45, and the stat is already pretty good, you would most likely get some broken raw power. So basically it all comes to stat distribution.

That's not entirely fair though, most teams have a backup dynamax mon. Mega requires an item, so if it dies you're boned if your opponent still has thier's. Namely if you lose your Kanga and they still have thier's (probably at +2 att), you're really screwed and not favoured to win at all. At least if Coalossal dies, you can Let your rotom/Togekiss max and maybe pull out a win. Not to mention dynamax is much better at playing defensively than mega ever was, so you can usually mitigate your dmax dying by just press max guard turn 1 or rely on the increased bulk to get a move off. Dynamax is way less variance based than Megas ever were, in VGC at least; they're obviously pure coin-flip in singles.

@@Bladius_ Yes it is true that dynamax is more powerful than mega's but thats essentially the problem dynamax is too op. Mega evolution was balanced 10x more than dynamax and when there were op mega's like kangaskahn they were nerfed in gen 7.

@@Pyromkw Dynamax isn't OP at all. When I first saw dynamax I thought it was a mess, mainly because no item was required, but it's actually turned out to be really well balanced and way less variance based that z-moves/Megas. Not needing an item was actually a good thing, because it allows you to pull out comebacks with other mons. And like I said above the health gain actually allows it to be used as a defensive manouver not just a "press this and sweep" button. And of course you can kinda stall Dmax if you play well which is another mark in it's favour. And the "it's Z-moves for 3 turns" meme needs to die, they're nowhere near as powerful as Z-moves were in raw damage. The mechanic is centralising for sure, but it's less centralised than megas since any mon on your team can do it; it's not jsut a game of "protect the kanga" like gen 6 was. VGC is the best it's been in a very long time. And your post didn't actually back up you point very well, you just said "mega was balanced" but didn't give any actual points in defence of that; whereas I've given several :P

Not exactly. Megas are very different compared to just having new pokemon for a few reasons. Only could only pokemon per side could mega evolve per battle. This is the biggest difference, a full team of megas would just be ridiculous. The option to not mega evolve existed. This was most notable on pokemon with useful on entry abilities like intimidate or frisk, or pokemon where mega evolving changed the typing. Pokemon entered without a mega evolution. In cases where the pokemon in question switched into an attack, they wont have their mega evolved stats/abilities. Mega stones were mandatory.

@@Aquilenne My point is just that with this generation and the removal of mega forms I think we all can see that some Pokemon don't work outside of that one key gimmick. And while I know I can just go download a Drayano hack and playthrough with a Lopunny that's Normal/Fighting with decent stats, why can't the base game allow for that? Why can't a Pokemon like Beedrill be as viable as other bug Pokemon just because it's a gen 1 Poke? I'd rather just make more Pokemon acceptable on a base level than give a select few the strongest power increase that was made for that generation.
