Metalheads are oftentimes extremely devoted to the music we listen to. However, are there objective reasons (or as close to objective as you can get) that metal could be considered the best or most versatile musical genre? In this video, I go into some of the reasons I think there is an argument to be made!
The background music used in this video:

I wanted to try to turn a pretty subjective statement into as much objectivity as I can. At the end of the day, we can all enjoy what we want to enjoy! But I had some points I wanted to make about the metalhead community and metal as a whole. What're your reasons you think metal is the best genre--if you think it is! If not, what's your favorite and why?! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

One of the best things about metal is that there's so many good sub genres based on so many cultures. Like korpiklaani and Arkona. Always felt like rap and pop mostly got repetitive even while mixing with other main genres. But I guess you can say because metal for the most part creates a lot of their own as well as mix with others is why I find it more unique. So many different sounds even from bands that are in the same genre. Like Shrüm and Acid Bath, sure their both sludge metal but both sounds unique in their own way.

Yeah! There are so many little ways you can tweak it and bring your own significance and culture into it and I think that's a beautiful way to connect with listeners and always reinvent the wheel!

Metal is the most FLEXIBLE genre on the planet because it's not defined by rhythmic/melodic/harmonic patterns but rather by the timbre of distorted guitars, powerful drums, and emphatic emotional expression. Think about it this way - play a musical passage from any other genre and apply the above 3 factors to it - and it BECOMES Metal. Obviously there are distinct rhythmic/melodic/harmonic components that have manifested in Metal but they don't define it the way Jazz/Funk/Reggae etc. do. When you combine half Metal, half Jazz - it's a form of Metal. When you combine half Funk half Metal - it's a form of Metal, when you combine half Reggae, half Metal - it's a form of Metal. The reason for that is SIMPLE - despite Metal's reputation for "gatekeeping" - in reality, other genres gatekeep more! The majority of their audience DOES NOT WANT those types of music to be played too aggressively, with loud distorted guitars and pounding drums. Therefore - they become Metal because, despite the resistance of many fans - that's where they gain more of an audience.
@TheMetalTempestYT
@TheMetalTempestYT Ай бұрын
I cannot express how true this all is I definitely can agree about the gatekeeping part especially. Honestly, so much metal comes from a place of lack of acceptance and conformity and I fuck heavily with that, pun unintended. Metal can be anything and has shown it can be anything!

Yeah purely because the vast diversity of subgenres that metal has singlehandedly made this my most listened to genre hands down. So much shit I bop to from prog metal, to alt/nu metal, to metalcore, to death metal, to black metal, to grindcore, and other stuff. Shit seemingly just never gets old and there's always a bottomless pit of great material to come across.

Idk for sure if this is the case, but I think one of the big reasons that metal has so many crossovers with different genres is because it is an acquired taste usually adopted in the teenage to young adult years. Since that is the case, many metalheads are exposed to more mainstream genres before coming to metal and therefore can have massively different ideas of what music is and how it can be made. Then, when these new metalheads want to make their own music, these inspirations from other genres are mixed into the metal, creating more variety within the genre. This gives the genre a unique chameleon-like quality, where it is able to change and adapt to whatever the current musical landscape looks like.

Metal is the best music for one very simple reason: I have no goddam clue. Seriously. The first time I heard it (particularly Power Metal), it just made sense. It's like being in love. You can rattle off reasons why you love the person, but in the end, it just comes down to a feeling. An intangible yet incredibly solid realization that this is The One you wanna spend the rest of your life with.🤘🖤🤘 Excellent topic Tempest. Well done! 🍻

When I got into metal as a teenager, my dad made it very clear he had nothing but disdain for my musical taste and did not approve of it. He also assumed it was a phase I was going through, that I would naturally 'grow out of it'. Of course he was wrong. I'm now 52 years old and still a rabid metalhead. It wasn't just music, he always had a hard time accepting my taste in other areas, too. Movies, TV shows, books, etc. Now, don't get me wrong - in many ways he was a good guy and a compassionate, generous person. But because he could never quite accept the things I was passionate about fully, there was always a distance between us, some unresolved lack of understanding that will never been resolved, and conversations that should have been had that never will be. If your dad can never accept you for who you are and who you want to be, there will always be a gap of understanding between you that can never be closed. Sad, but true. Fortunately, there's still time left for you and your dad, if he can learn to accept who you are. Time for me and mine ran out when he died three years ago.

Don't know about anyone else when it comes to 'there's a metal genre for everyone'. But my mom used to burn my CDs/magazines and such and now I'm slowly but steadily getting her into Bruce Dickinson and power metal mwahahaha. When it comes to people who connect and are passionate about their music though, I think there's also a lot of pop fans and jazz fans who fit into this category. Not modern mainstream pop though. But yeah these are the music nerds and maybe it's more part of the culture in metal to have and discuss your connection to the music. Also love ur 'least metal outfit' it's cute af ❤

I'd say it's the best in terms of variety and dynamic of genres, with so many different possibilities for combining different sound and techniques to produce a signature mark. Like every genre has its "signature" mark that readily distinguishes from another and which dedicated fans and musicians will automatically be able to tell from another genre, and that's something that I think is definitely unique in metal with every genre and sub genre having distinctions that cannot just be blended and morphed into another genre like in so many other genres. And also unlike other genres, thousands of new, innovative, fresh sounding acts come to the stage every year meaning you'll never get tired of a lack of innovation or style, there's always something new and fresh to listen to and get interested in. There's so much I could say but don't want to ramble on.

I’ll make the argument that 90’s Metalcore when it was still attached to Punk & Hardcore is the best genre of Metal period, and for good reason. One of the big things about Metalcore that makes it kind of the only genre of Metal i’ll go out of my way to listen too is Metalcore, at it’s roots, being a rejection of the culture and the elitism surrounding Metal. You had bands playing riffs that wouldn’t be out of place hearing in a Thrash song alongside Hardcore grooves and lyrics that actually have substance and meaning to them. You didn’t see bands dressing up and acting super serious at an Earth Crisis show or even a Converge show because it went against everything that Hardcore stood for, and that’s one of the big things that drew me into Metalcore; the rejection of tradition and the lack of putting yourself above everyone else because you listened to a certain type of music. It’s hard for me to take a band that dresses up in leather and spikes singing about dungeons & dragons or comic book characters seriously when they want to act like everyone else is beneath them for not enjoying that same type of music, let alone bands who write songs about some incredibly depraved, evil shit as if they even have the balls to be able to carry out said acts theirselves. Unfortunately, Metalcore in recent years has become so much closer to Metal to the point where the rejection of tradition and lyrics with substance have either been completely done away with, or are so deeply buried in symbolism that people have to wade through all the metaphorical bullshit in order to understand the message that they’re trying to get across. The worst part about Metalcore today though? The occurrence of Rockstars & larger than life figures constantly pushing theirselves into the spotlight as if they’re Nikki Sixx or Brett Michaels. It’s something about Metalcore that should be completely done away with, and it makes me glad that there are bands like Drain, Kublai Khan TX, Frontierer, etc that are trying to distance theirselves from that rockstar mentality in order to either get a profound message across, or push the boundaries of what can be done with music as a whole to the point where it becomes a complete rejection of the many Architects clones in the scene that have popped up in recent years.

Have you ever listened to metal with influences from drum and bass? Famous artists that play it include Zardonic, Celldweller, The Qemists, Pendulum, Toronto is Broken and Enter Shikari. Drum and bass is my favourite music genre of all time, with metal (especially metalcore) as a close second. In fact I feel like a bit of an outsider in my IRL metal community sometimes, since I did not grow up with it and did not become a metalhead until I was 20. I also do not dress like a metalhead and do not find the aesthetic my 'type' in a partner. Because I started out on metalcore, some of the classic stuff felt underwhelming and not heavy enough by comparison. Some metalheads are the best people I've met and are great friends of mine, while others are difficult to read and seem like they're judging me for being an outsider. In the one year I've been a metalhead, I've listened to a wide scope of music but I know hardly any names of members of my favourite bands and will occasionally have no clue who a famous band are. I hope to find a community of ravers at some point though, it is very frustrating that my university doesn't have a society for us and that most of my friends aren't into that. Anyway if you read all of this that means a lot, keep making awesome content out there! 🖤🖤

I know is a pretty subjective take, but for me metal (or rock spectrum to be more accurate) is the best genre because it encapsulate the whole spectrum of human emotion, and by that I mean it can go from the most hopeful and pretty music to the most degenerate and deranged hateful stuff. Every emotion imaginable have a metal song for it. I can't say that about other genres that are only made for very specific mods and are unexistent outside that context, by that I mean something like chill relaxing music, party music or folk stuff. Metal on the other side can happen everywhere and is one of the the few genres where their listeners actually care about how is made and try to play it instead of listening it as background noise and turn off the brain. And the best part of this is that is not an isolated genre, it can work pretty good with any other music, jazz, pop, classical music, trap, folk, latin, etc... throw everything, there is at least one metal band mixing metal with it.

well most of the best / most talented musicians are working under the umbrella of metal (not 80%+ but I would say 60%+ because the really skilled classical musicians are becoming less and less). think about any instrument and look for the people that can perform it on the highest level. a big number of them will most likely make metal music. they may be doing other music too, but at some point they have probably been active in the metal scene. and that can't be said about any other genre
