Laundry: Try to make sure the plumbing hookups are easily accessible. Consider a tray+drain for under the washer. People are going to suggest a stacking pair, but a side-by-side pair gives you more counter space. Extra timber in the floor to resist vibration from the machines shaking is also a good idea.
@ice4142

I agree don't stack. You can have storage under the sink and some wall cabinets leaving the counter free.

for side by side, check the door swings of the two machines, especially based on the plumbing, our combo set, one of them the door can swap, the other cant, and due to the plumbing the doors open into each other, making the transfer from washing to dryer just a touch more awkward. Plumbing for dryer as a heat pump dryer, solution is to have plumbing in place for both.

3m is a decent space. I would suggest a front loader washer, so that it can be under the bench. Biggest sink you can manage to one side, to give a long bench for folding. Drier under rather than over, as they are head bangers. Separate the washer and dryer with open shelves that take multiple matching laundry baskets, keeping the mess below eye level. And shallower cupboards above for all the detergent bottles etc, shallow so you can lean over the bench when folding/ cleaning.

Put the washer and dryer on a small plinth to allow easy drainage from the cleaning ports, make sure you get the dryer type that can drain to a waste. Oversize the sink. for some reason this was a really satisfying episode :)

Just did a laundry room where front loading washer and dryer installed which enabled putting a counter across the top of both machines. Serves dual purpose: spot to fold, put clothes on, and the counter was finished wood so actually added decor element. Also, this enabled using scarce floor space to put in a small laundry sink in a vanity. Vanity was storage for clothes washing stuff and tied into counter top.

What about putting the dryer in the porch of the back door? No humidity or noise inside and still easy to get to. Just deepen the porch and put the cupboard behind the door. We have the dryer suspended at head height, drawers beneath with shoes and small gardening tools, and recycling bin on the ground. Works awesome & give heaps more space in laundry

I have an all-in-one washer/dryer. It is one machine that washes and dries the clothes rather than two separate units. They are a touch slower than two separate units. They only need a water hook up and a typical outlet (120 volts in the US). They do not require venting. Having a single unit really freed up a lot of space in my laundry nook.

Laundry: I'd caution against the under-bench front-loading side-by-side combo. That's what I did and while it looks like a million bucks, from a every-day practical point of view it kinda sucks. You get to this "oh stuff it" mood where you sit on your butt in front of these machines, moving washing from one to the other. You block the whole passageway while you're doing that - not as much a problem for you guys because you've got the loop. On the other hand, you have maximum bench space. We found that super handy when we were doing our kitchen reno - the laundry bench gave us enough space to have a kitchenette for a couple of weeks. Cost saving tip: The kitchen cabinetry guys also did the cabinetry in our laundry. We were getting stone in the kitchen but asked them if they could do the laundry cheaper/faster. They pulled a laminate bench out of their seconds/returns pile for us. It had a tiny chip on one edge that would be cut off anyway while resizing it to fit - so actually a non issue. It looks great and cost bugger all. If I could do the laundry again, I'd have the machines either in a vertical stack or on a raised platform so that their doors are at a working height. The upshot of the stack is you still get bench space. The upshot of a platform is that you can build in a lot of vibration dampening, so it doesn't feel like an earthquake every time the washing machine is spinning your duvets, and you can build in under-machine storage drawers.

Hi Scott and Jess, you're asking your laundry to do a lot and with a linear 3m space something is going to have to give. I would suggest using the wardrobe in the spare room for your linens as by the time you fit a laundry tub, washing machine and dryer side by side in the laundry space, thereby giving you a usable bench, you only have approx 1m left. My suggestion for the 1m would be a tall cupboard that is a space to store ironing board, vacuum cleaner, broom, mop etc - the stuff that is not easily stored elsewhere in the house. On the wall above your bench a small open shelf for easy access to washing powders etc and a couple of slim cabinets will allow storage of all cleaning products. The space under the laundry tub is ideal or storage of buckets etc. Good luck with the rest of your reno 😊😊

Or get a stacking washer dryer. Or do what they do in Europe and get under-counter units - with some cabinet doors, they would be invisible. I never use the laundry room sink, so I would do away with that.

thanks for taking us alone. If floor space is tight, stackable washer/dryer with a counter and sink with matching floor to ceiling cabinet for storage. Matching upper cabinets above sink. I enjoyed your cabinet making series from several months ago. IMHO, Too much flat counter space begins to collect stuff. More cabinets for storage, less counter. It may sound backwards but it's a great room to hide storage vs a big counter to fold laundry. Whatever Jess decides will be great and you will make it beautifully.

For the laundry area I would have cabinets above everything for the storage, and I don't know the dimensions of the Washer, Dryer, and Sink you will be using but going off the typical dimensions for those things around where I live would leave you approximately 3/4 of a meter of worktop space available, which isn't a terrible amount of space depending on what you plan to use it for.

I also have a small laundry. I built a really heavy duty top cabinet and put the dryer up above the bench above the washer to save space. It helps to get a heat pump/condensing dryer if you do this so you don't have to plan a duct into it.

I just did a laundry renovation and was tossing up between a washer dryer stack (if you buy same brand you can get a kit that connects them) but ended up going with side by side with a large butcher block counter, drop in sink, matt black tap-ware and herringbone subway tiles. Also did some wall mount cabinets that have gas strut doors that lift up out of the way and some open shelves for pretty things. Oh and light strips under the shelves. Looked a million bucks and cost under $3000 aud

Our front-loading dryer is wall mounted above the top-loading washing machine and that definitely makes good use of our very small laundry space. I can't help but wish we had a front-loading wall mounted washing machine above a top-loading dryer though. Then I could just pull the clothes out of the top one and drop them into the lower one rather than the other way around. Not so sure about 100kg of agitating water and clothes being wall-mounted though!

The concrete pump - swan lake shot got a smile out of me. 😺. Front loader washing machines are generally quieter than top loaders and also gentler on clothes. They also allow stacking of dryer over it or to run a bench over it. Consider how you are going to run your air extract from the dryer to the outside.

In my laundry area (which is in the same space as my kitchen in a 100 year old bungalow) we created a custom hutch to conceal the washer & dryer. It consists of a 30 inch deep X 60 inch wide cabinet with a butcher block top and a 15 inch deep X 48 inch high upper cabinet resting on the block top. The lowest part of the upper cabinet has a 15 inch tall full width fold up door (to allow access for hookups and when open it creates a large landing area) and the remaining upper shelf area has standard function swing open doors. The lower cabinet features pocket slide doors (these open 90 degrees then slide back into the cabinet) and a faux toe kick. Immediately adjacent to the hutch is a tall storage cabinet and then a mudroom cabinet. The only real issue I've had is the butcher block partially conceals the washer's soap tray a bit. Aside from a sink it's a similar requirement and layout to what you are working with. Our dimensions were obviously driven by the choice of washer & dryer (the wife insisted on big units for some reason) so you might be able to incorporate a sink if you've got a bit over 3 meters and reasonably sized appliances.

I've stacked my washing machine and dryer, two machines on one footprint, you could have this one side bench in the middle and other storage on the opposite side, if stacking the machines it's nice to have the doors of them opening in the same direction, if you stack them to the left side of the alcove then have the door hinges on the left, so the doors don't get in the way.

Kia Ora Scott, great video. What I did in my laundry was put my front-loader washing machine on a stand so the clothes basket fits underneath for storage. Pull out the clothes basket, open the washing machine door, empty the machine straight into it. Then onto the clothes line (so easy). I put the dryer upside down above it - above door-hitting-head-height - with a gap between for storing washing powder etc.

Awesome you have some time to set the laundry situation up because sometimes you get started on the project and ask us when you are half way through it. LOL....anyway, my two cents work re: laundry and your need for a counter space with the limited area you have, and you want a sink there as well. Have you thought about the laundry/dryer combo where the dryer is on top of the washing machine? You can get top load or front load washer with this set up. The research says that front load cause a few more issues than top loads. You folks are resourceful so I am sure when you do your own research you will figure things out for the pros and cons of front load vs top load. Anyway, super saving space option is to have the combo dryer above washer. I continue to enjoy your content, cheers from East Altantic Canada....quite a ways "Over the pond"☺👍🇨🇦

My $0.02: front loading 24" stacked washer and flueless dryer on a 3" platform. Sink on the left of the stack, 16" wide or so. On the opposite side, a tall cabinet for ironing board and broom/mop, 12 to 14" wide. That should leave at least 145cm for a nice countertop with storage under and above. Built in the countertop there may be a 70cm wide plate that pulls out from under the countertop, adding a nice surface perpendicular to the countertop, almost as deep as the countertop. That plate can be pushed in when not in use. Cheers!

Agree about not stacking the dryer… give yourself plenty of counter space… also keep a bit of space so you can tuck a chair under the counter, during lockdown I worked from my laundry very comfortably, and you could as well… It can be more than just a laundry…. Laundry/home office/study nook. Also some type of doors that can be folded away out of sight when in use and then closed to hide your dirty undercrackers when ‘in-use’ haha😂 oh also we use our Laundry as a bit of a ‘butlers pantry’ and keep our microwave, sodastream and a few other counter top appliances in there so we free up space in the kitchen… might not be an option for you as the kitchen is not right beside it, but might be worth considering… Laundry/study nook/pantry/storage/storage

I would normally suggest stackers... but if you're going to try to get countertop space AND a sink, I think you need side-by-side with the countertop above the washer/dryer, and then somehow manage to fit a sink in. Maybe kitchen-style storage with cabinets below/above the sink? If it's going to be a general purpose utility sink, make sure there's plenty of room to work in there (which might make the the idea of cabinets above undesirable). Definitely recommend a contained drain/pan system underneath the laundry units. Makes cleanup of eventual messes easier. It'd be good if the hookups (Water/power) have easy access, too. Awesome content to watch, I'm looking forward to the kitchen construction.

Laundry: 1) you could inset the sink lower than the counter and have an insert so you can cover it and have a full size workbench and a sink spout that can move so you can twist it parallel to the back wall.2) under sink cupboard/s, thin ironing board cupboard on one side and overhead cabinets that go to the ceiling, might need a step ladder or a library ladder to get to them but good for less frequent item storage. also over bench working light on the underside of the overhead cabinets.3) use french cleats for the wall cabinets and flex waterlines to the sink/workbench cabinet with lockable castors and have it modular until you find a good set up. good to pullout and clean in a laundry as well just in case water leaks/overflows/spills.

At home we have washer and dryer stacked so it means we can bring all dirty laundry to the same point. Obviously that depends on you having side loading appliances. Otherwise a folding ironing board in a tall cupboard would be handy. If you have a choice though ironing would tend to be better in a room where you can isolate humidity and potentially the heat. Definitely more applicable to hot summers and cold winters.

Laundry: We are in the midst of building a house and have a similarly-sized laundry area along a hallway. Our solution is a commercial style overhead roller door, like a giant tambour door. It's 2.5m wide x 2m tall and made of alumin[i]um. We will have a water heater, stacked washer and dryer and lots of open shelving and drying racks in there. The door is metal, which is quite industrial, but we are going to try and get a local artist in to paint a vivid mural/graphic/graffiti on it. We went with the overhead door because it doesn't take up any wall space when open, and when closed will handily muffle the noise of the appliances.

I don’t know about in your part of the world, but in California you can hire a concrete pumper who only has a pump on a trailer and lengths of concrete hose (about 3 meters each) that you join together and bring to your pour location, and it is a lot cheaper than renting the full boom truck. Maybe something either worth looking into if you can rent, and if not, maybe something a different viewer more local might think about starting as a small business. Also especially useful on weird access areas like way up or down a hill, behind existing structures, etc. Also, don’t tell your inspector, but don’t you have to vibrate your concrete in New Zealand to get all the air out, and get it to settle in properly to the bottom and fill out any voids with a big electric vibrator? (Insert snickers, but I’m serious; they usually have a ~two meter long “wand” with a big heavy [~10kg] metal….glands on the end)

Top loader washing machine with clothes dryer directly above, small laundry sink, rest of space linen closet. You can always go without a bench, but not without storage or cupboard space.

I don't know Scott. nailing off hangers has to be one of my most favorite things to do. it can suck but I'm swinging a hammer and something about that brings me joy Haha.

Yeah, that air gun is like a combination of a palm nailer and, what in Canada I would call, a hanger gun. The "hanger" gun we use is a strap shot/paper collated type that shoots 1" 10p nails.

Why not using a coil gun to nail the hanger straps ?
@KenMcGeachy
@KenMcGeachy Жыл бұрын
The paper collated nails in the hanger gun actually protrude out of the nose of the gun, allowing you to set the tip on the nail into the hole of the joist hanger or strap. Super helpful. It looked like the gun Scott was using used the same type nails, and probably had the same helpful feature.

Laundry: Dryer and washer next to each other. Make sure you can reach the plumbing and electral plugs. Be nice to the next dryer or people in the house, give the dryer its own (or shared) waste pipe (? (the thing where the old water goes.. yey, non native english)). Side by side dryer, washer and sink. Maybe use some kitchen cabinets, also the hanging ones for a lot of storage. It also gives a nice finished look. Do make sure your counter top is high enough for you to work on without killing your back. You'll spend some time there folding and sorting. Succes, de groeten en zie je later

For your laundry, have you thought about moving it to the garage? Might have more room in the house as well as more room for a larger laundry setup!

Front loading washing machines with a bench and shelving over top. Also you have to keep in mind venting for the dryer. Love watching your progress. Have a nice day.

Heaps of space for the laundry. I'd go with washer and dryer underneath with a sink and ~800mm cabinet between them, then bench top above with a full over cupboard above that for 2 meters of the space. Then a separate full height 1m wide pantry style cupboard with maybe a high open space for things like your ironing board or a charging wand vacuum.

Great, now I want to buy a concrete pump. Vertical stacked washer and dryer with the washing machine on top, that way you work with gravity to pull the wet clothes in. Would recommend Samsung as they have digital inverters and good warranties, plus an amazing tune when they finish. Potentially have some way of concealing the area with a heavy curtain or those Japanese paper doors

Scott, that Tjep hammer gun is Nice and all, but becarefull with longer use of it, I know a guy that wrecked his wrist for good punching nails with that gun on a large project.. I only use it with anti-vibration gloves now 👍

Front loader washing machine, front loading drier, counter above both with a sink, small broom cupboard to the far side, overhead cupboards across the entire length. Should fit comfortably in a 3m space I think

My top tips for the laundry: As much power (GPO) for the units and then a couple more for charging vacuum and other devices. Lighting that comes on when you open the doors and goes off when you close them, condenser dryer to reduce moisture build up and reduce noise as they are quieter. Then make a list of items to store in laundry so you build enough storage especially if you have multiple buckets and brooms and an ironing board and iron etc. Not sure about the big sink, I got away with a smaller sink and a bigger bucket for hand washing as the sink can take up a lot of under bench space that is valuable for storage. Wall tiles that are 45cm so less grout above the counter, mixer tap, no handles on the cupboards. One last thing, where is your dirty clothes basket going?

watch for vibration and noise if next to a living space get as big a capacity machines as possible, i think doors can be swapped so ensure they open the correct way for swapping, high storage for things at only get used one in a while

I would want a vertical cabinet for brooms etc. If you go horizontal washer/dryer you may not have room for a sink. So i would go vertical washer/dryer at the end, bench and sink in middle with tall cabinet at the other end with overhead storage.

3m Space, Stack the washer dryer takes it down to 2.4m then a 600mm wide and 300mm deep sink. Leave you with 1.8m workable bench space, with 2.4m overheads and below counter storage, plenty for a 2 bedroom house.

If storage is important and so too benchtop space then I would install a slimline drawer style benchtop that slides out to play when you need it but tucks neatly away when you don’t. 👍

from North American experience: Front end loading laundry equipment is generally the lower end on quality, and worse to manage repairs. They generally have a lower life span than top loaders.
