Cause WH used a large number of inhouse tools and not all of them were shared with the community. Plus the documentation wasn't ideal. Cryengine itself wasn't too bada to use, but WH established a large of number of workflows for stuff like character models which made custom mesh implementation pretty diffuclt. We managed to get custom armour in but it was super tedious and discouraged us from working on it further, plus we never found programmers to help us. Regards Seven Kingdoms team

I think you might be giving Cryengine a little too much credit there, I love Cryengine but it is an engine made SPECIFICALLY for FPS games. Fantastic engine, I love all the tools the engine has built-in that honestly blow its competition out of the water once you understand it more, but I think most of the reason WH had to make so many inhouse tools was due to the limitations of Cryengine.

Your missing the main reasoning why some games have giant modding scenes and others don’t, it’s mod-ability and the foundation of creation for the game itself and how many systems would need to be tweaked or recreated. Think about it like this as an easy example how hard would it be to make ai combat and pathing for warband vs deliverance, how about creating assets, the difference in graphical fidelity between the two. The way looting or gear works warband is a simple ui at end of battle. Complex movement dependent systems in deliverance good luck fixing clipping and hit boxes on custom maps. There is also the aspect of the way the code was organized and what engine is being used. Your missing all of these fundamentals in your style of videos about modding and after market support for games. It has much less to do with the points you’ve listed than you think
@nbkhnzzr
@nbkhnzzr 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of that stuff wouldn't be necessary. Kingdom come already had dynamic parking and ai. Just like Skyrim and pretty much every other RPG that's come out in the last decade. The purpose of modding tools was to give us the ability to add things without needing to create our own hitbox/clipping systems. Skyrim and Fallout get high quality assets made for them everyday. Bannerlords modded assets look absolutely amazing. If the passion and demand was there, these mods would get made. The issue is that those things aren't there. Cyberpunk doesn't even have proper modding tools yet and we've already gotten multiple mods that add in companions, new small quests, reputation systems, complete overhauls of Rpg mechanics

@@nbkhnzzr the examples I was giving were very summarized and not exactly the correct wording and terminology. I’m not in the modding scene dont create assets dont code my knowledge is baseline. But the message the video is pushing is timing/playerbase/and hype being the main reasoning behind the lackluster modding scene for deliverance. Maybe those things carry more weight than I’m giving credit but my point is the vid is completely missing the actual difficulty of creation aspect and the difference between the scale of projects because of the things I listed and much much more

@@nbkhnzzr It was a tiny part of the video and was using as a possible reason, not the entire reason. But no, you are wrong, there are hundereds of M&B total conversion mods for the MP. But my main point was, MP Keeps the player base high, skyrim, this doesnt matter its already massive in a massive series. KCD was a first IP so didnt have an already established fanbase. Not for one second do I think KCD should have had MP, that makes no sense. But in general, MP effects player numbers, which effects modders williness to put time into making mods.

completely agree, I love how this game forces you to whip out your bow and hope to god you land those first few shots you can take before the melees get to you when you need to make a bandit camp go away. there's a real sense of danger, even though it's already kinda unrealistic that one man can go into a camp and kill 5 bandits + their leader, it strikes a really great balance between feeling like just another weak, vulnerable human and playing a fun RPG game.

I was never a gamer. being lucky enough to have a real life, I was considering time spend in front of a PC screen just a terrible waste - and I stil do. But after another of my office PC upgrade I've realized, that my system is now capable to run the highest graphic hungry apps on multiple monitors - games included. In that time, KCD was already couple years old story and being born in Bohemia myself, I've just paid couple of dollars and installed the game. After it loaded up first time I've just cranked everyhing to the highest possible resolution and hit the start just to see what happen. This was almost a year ago. I have to congratulate the whole Warhorse Studio team for this truly revolutional game. Attention to detail, truly believable storyline based on historical events, stunning architecture, immersive landscape and above all, the way you guys implemented all at the time possible risk and rewards of being Henry is simply stunning. Actually - it should be exactly the other way around - everyone else should make games at least that good instead of the BS produced nowadays. I'm considering KCD as the Holy Grail of video games. A glitch in the system - in the positive way. Warhorse Studios did put the bar way up there. Yes, the game shouldn't be easy to play or able to snitch your way around because if you try to create a truly realistic remake of a life in mideval Bohemia, the life was damn't hard back there. And there wasn't much of any mods and special abilities avilable as well. Anyway, about 3/4 years later with occasionally still playing KCD as the only game I've ever spendet the the time and money for, I've just pass the 3 million groschen mark in my Pribyslawitz chest - in hadcore mode without a single pickpocketing or ever stealing from others than the bad guys. Oh, and about the combat - try to overpay Zoul and then do singlehandedly defeat everyone there - it's well worth the money. Or do the Rattay Tourney drunk as hell. I've learned a lot about Bohemian history then ever before and that's something you wont find in any other game. Period. I'll love a sequel of this one for sure . . .

I think there is a problem with the idea that as there isn't a very large active player base anymore, moders aren't willing to put much time in moding. For example, Daggerfall, the second title of the Elder Scrolls series released in the mid 90s, was completely recreated using the unity engine by fans (Daggerfall unity), and now moders put tons of their time to create mods and overhauls, depise it being rather niche and don't attract a big player base. Also, I don't think we can link the lack of mods to the late release date of moding tools. An example would be Master of Magic, a DOS game that always was a niche game are still receiving patches and overhauls (Caster of Magic) despise the lack of moding tools (they did it by hacking the files of the game, writing new code in assembly and manipulating the binary). So, in my observation, the love that a subset of the players maintain for the game, and the replayability offered by the said game are the two defining points for the game longevity, which includes its mod community.

I've been a bit busy in life, but I've always been super fond of KCD and I did complete the main story. I'm just now redownloading the official modding tools, which are now at version 3.0. The last time I downloaded the mod tools they were barely around 1.0. Now I'm looking and looking, and the tutorials for the installation of the official modding tools is outdated, and the author of one such tutorial mentioned that his tutorial needed revisions since the new version of the mod tools came out (and that was older mod tools than i have now), so there really isn't anywhere at all for me to have a solid instruction for installing the newest official modding tools as they do not come with instructions in the zip file of tools. Seriously, we have an 8 part video tutorial of how to do some basic script work with some of the tools, but not a single official video of how to actually set up the newest, or each, version of the official modding tools. It's like donating a bionic leg to an amputee, but not sending instructions or offering technical assistance to install it. it shouldn't be this hard. just write a notepad document and pack it with the tools. this is exactly why i will make my first indy project with Godot, or an alternative to blender game engine, rather than one of the main and proprietary engines, because they're just so damned convoluted.

I don't know. The focus on realism to the exclusion of everything else seemed to carry through to the modding and one thing a healthy modding has is the ridiculous. KC:D seemed against that kind of thing at it's core. It's through the ridiculous that normal mods also get made.

Vids that age well. With kcd2 around the corner, hopes are high. Announcing the vision for the sequel. More emphasis impacting of decisions, new combat mechanics( through ranged weapons, closer relationships between beloved npcs(capon and godwin confirmed), twice the mapsize, and a morr experienced dev team that prides itself on grass roots support(receptive to criticism) i havent looked forward to a single player rpg more than i am to kcd2

I said this to myself, that if KCD modding community doesn’t provide an Assassin’s Creed inspired armor, and only just retexture existing outfit to be more stealthy, then don’t expect the community to go any higher than having patches, unlimited saving, bow aim tweak, etc.

I think a reasonable approach would be what they did with GTA 5. A single player world like we have now and a seperate experience that you can play online or alone.

Modding KCD and modding Warband is completely different, anyone can mod Mount and Blade with little experience whatsoever, it's based on python and most of the games base attributes can be altered in text files, easy to use community tools exsist so the point you can create a new mod by just changing numbers and stats in tools like Morgh's Tool and MBTweak. KCD's released tools don't even let you do basic things like add new items or provide information on how to change textures. They're extremely overcomplicated to use for even an experienced modder of other games.

I made some successful mods for this game when it came out, and there were upwards of 20 new mods every day on the nexus back then. But instead of releasing their tools quickly, they decided to focus on fking dog dlcs

@@highviewbarbell yes. One time. But there is no replayability to the game. It's only got a couple of quests with any meaningful decision making. Once you've done something there is no reason to do so again. It doesnt have replayability. You liking the game so much you can replay it over and over again is less about the quality of the game and more about your love for the game. I think it's probably just the difficulty of the engine and working with it using the tools etc. Skyrim got massive new mods constantly throughout it's life-cycle and people are still developing massive mod projects. If the core game is good it doesn't REALLY matter in the long run if the tool took a year to come out. I'm sure it matters short term but all that needed to happen was one, or a few amazing mods in order to spur the rest of the creative community back into the game. Simple mods like Enderal going viral for example probably inspired a hundred new mod creators.

I think when players want mods they want to mod it to the point where it becomes a different game because they're looking for something that it's not. This always brings me back to one point, developers should create a game that they want to share with players who want it. Players shouldn't be forcing dev companies to modify a game to how they desire it (*cough NMS*). That depletes he entire purpose for that developer to want to create that game. Developers want the players that will fall in love with the vision of the game they wish to create, not be told every which way they should have made the game and to change/add it. That's asking for a different game and where I say the players should look for something different. I don't care for mods personally b/c it takes away certain experiences from what is aimed to be delivered. I support improvement of life changes but I don't consider those mods.

You can't even find a mod that gives you a plebian house let alone a castle, these are the mods that get thrown at your head when it comes to TES games yet nearly there none of them exist for KCD except for literally 2 mods, and one of those is just changing the sleeping places you require while progressing the main game. The fact that Henry is a voiced protagonist doesn't help at all for modded quests either. This game just doesn't have what it takes I guess, quite sad tbh.

I think the whole game is oriented towards realism and mods in most case scenarios are but that. On top of it i think modding support came way too late for the game, and vast majority of hype settled down. Im no modder and probably majority of people here in the comments are not as well so i cant comment on the difficulty with this specific game engine and its tools. I think its the combination of many things, modding tools came too late, potential issues on creating mods and new content, game is not friendly to its mainstream market with its heavy approach to realism. I loved the game, put 180h into it, completed all its quests and dlc's but im not sad that modding support didnt take of. Im pretty sure we are going to see kcd2 in couple of years anyway.
