Montreal's metro may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of top-notch public transit, especially compared to cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona, or Berlin. However, it's worth noting that 83 per cent of Montreal find the public transit system effective in getting them where they need to go. So, why is the metro in Montreal so popular, and what could make it even better?

I would mention: air conditioning feels a lot less necessary now with the new trains. The draft that you get from all the wagons being connected together makes it feels cooler and fresher.

Montreal metro stations are really beautiful. I was shocked when I saw some Toronto stations that look like public toilets.

Correct. These are the very first stations built and Torontonians hated them too. When the University -Spadina line expanded later, they included art and better architecture

Mostly on line 2 Dupont is my favourite TTC station, a lot of Montreal vibe in a Torontonian soil.

You’re missing the biggest point, the metro needs to run later. Last call is 2am, you have to taxi back 🤦‍♂️ Edit: there is no last call anymore, metro needs to be 24/7 no questions asked.

I agree with you that 24/7 would be best, but to get that imo we would need driverless rolling stock!

The reason rail service does not run 24/7 is maintenance.

@@thefreshmaker001 Copenhagen does this with with just extra passing loops here and there, without having a whole nother pair of tracks.

Something i noticed was there aren't elevators at every station. I used to live near Jarry metro and the nearest station at the time with an elevator was Jean-Talon. This is unacceptable in a modern transit system. I never realized this problem until i injured myself and couldn't take the escalators. I had to take a ride to an accessible metro station.

Great video as always! I always admire the Montreal and Stockholm systems because both Sweden and Quebec were/are as close to the social democratic third way ideal as possible, at least when it comes to public infrastructure projects, which explains the public art/architecture that is on par with Moscow circa 1930's... My only advice is that they need to automated the existing subway lines so that they can offer a more Skytrain-like service frequency without raising service costs i.e. Labor.. and like you said... Platform screen doors. Those need to standard on every metro worldwide. And there's no excuse since every style of barrier now exists... Vertical drop down barriers, ribbon barriers, self-sliding doors to adjust for different rolling stock barriers... You can think of it? Someone already makes it!

The REM was built over a portion of the proposed metro line 3, which itself was supposed to be a conversion of Deux-Montagnes line with steel wheels. The REM is the first Montreal metro line to have air conditioned and heated trains due to it running elevated and at grade for the vast majority of its length, except for the Mount Royal Tunnel and the proposed underground stations on the airport branch. On the metro lines preceding the REM the trains don’t have air conditioning or heating due to the system being fully enclosed with very few ventilation shafts. Unless a technology that enables air conditioning in stations becomes available, equipping both air conditioning and heating on the trains will cause the tunnels to heat even more which would make the tunnels too hot for service to operate. London has historically not had air conditioning on its deep level tube trains for that same exact reason but is introducing air conditioning on its 2024 stock which is set to begin service in 2025 to 2027.

The Montreal Metro system is in dire need of disability-friendly stations for wheelchairs, etc. Maybe 3-4 stations have elevators, and the rest are all stairs (and some escalators) only.

Montreal was the city of the future in the 1960s and 1970s until extremist provincial politics scared a substantial portion of its tax base (which created from the exodus of top businesses and eventually 500,000 citizens over the decades) left a large amount of debt to be paid off from dwindling business concerns and smaller "eft over" population degraded the city's status and standard of living. Extreme "anything" is never a good plan. Unfortunately, the province has still not learned this lesson. Time for a change of thinking and "new management."

Like the roads. Montreal is "Coney Island" ... just roads filled with orange cones where many do not move for years (looks like construction but no much happens).
