This will allow me to touch on and explain some of the pre-Old Republic era leading up to the Galactic Constitution, particularly the topics of the Rakata and the Infinite Empire (which is a lot of fun anyway :)). This will put us in a better position of knowledge for Episode 1: The Birth of the Republic. Exar Kun's double-bladed lightsaber was special because it still had a regular hilt, which made it look like a single-bladed lightsaber. Darth Maul's lightsaber on the other hand was basically just two lightsabers welded together. Which did provide the advantage of still functioning after being cut in half, since it had two crystals and two power sources. The strict adherence to the discouragement of anything Dark Side related by the Jedi can ultimately be seen as a self-inflicted blindness towards anything that clashed with their ideology. When the Dark Side did rise, the Jedi were unprepared. Maul proved this when he destroyed two Jedi with ease and only failed because of his arrogance. His aggressive Form VII style and use of a double-bladed lightsaber proved too much for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan, whose Forms were geared more towards deflecting blaster fire and dealing with groups of enemies.

Some times I think that the dark side of the force is a drug that gets you addicted once you come off the hippie high of the light side of the force.

I find this so ridiculous. when the british came up against lancers in the battle of waterloo they then made lancer brigades due to their devastating charges. Every time one force came up against a more powerful weapon they'd copy it. examples: gladius, spatha, shield wall, semi-automatic rifles, legionaries, tanks and cavalry.

Having used a staff, I always thought double-bladed lightsabers were really dumb. you can't slide your hands down the shaft, which takes away all the real advantages of having a staff

The fact that Krell used not one but two saber staffs was the first sign that he would betray the Jedi.

How common was the usage of dual/twin light sabers like Ashoka Tano used?

Why is it that nobody in Star Wars knows how to use a double-ended weapon? The correct hand form is hands on opposite sides of the weapon (both thumbs pointed up). This produces a neutral stance with the blades slightly off vertical, which is ideal for blocking. The Sith (Darth Maul, Savage Opress, etc.) always seem to use a '2 hands over' grip (both thumbs to the inside) which puts your neutral position at the horizontal. To block any strike other than a vertical hack you have to cross your arms, which is clumsy.

What about the Temple Guards? They used lightstaff in their ranks as common weapon.

Interesting is the fact that in her confrontation with Revan. Bastila uses a single blade. However, after her confrontation with Revan and she is found by Revan on Taris, she is equipped with a double blade. Heh....looks like Revan corrupted her way before Malak did. lol... Talk about a bit of a quirk....and Bastila always harping and harping about the Dark Side.

The whole premise that two blades somehow give you a greater rate of attack etc. and is actually a superior weapon is totally flawed. Holding a staff like weapon in the middle like that wouldn't give you any advantage in speed, reach, or anything else, all you'd accomplish is severely limit your range of motion because you constantly have to worry about the blade you aren't attacking with hitting you instead. This is one of those really dumb things where people are basically going on video game logic. In reality the saber staff would be a cumbersome and stupid weapon that would have absolutely no merit, and the reason the Jedi don't use it is because it's just not effective. The one weapon that would actually have some merit that nobody seems to use is the saber pike, where a single lightsaber sits at the end of a long staff. Spears are actually more effective than swords in a fight, and polearms were the primary melee weapon of war throughout all of history, while swords were more side-arms for personal protection.

The craziest thing to me was that point pong krell dual wielded lightsaber staffs. Like I'm sure him having 4 arms helped him to done degree but still seems like it would take decades to master.

I would use a lightsabers like Exar Kun's. With practice in Soresu the standard length hilt and dual-phased blades would offer great defensive coverage and flexibility.

Jedi: Double bladed lightsabers bad Pong Krell: Laughs

Well, there´s a rather simple explanation to it(according to Drew Kapyshyns book "Dart Bane"): A swordstaff doesn´t only hold advantages. In fact, against a trained a capable swordman you are most likely in a disadvantage. While the flurry of attacks can overwhelm the unprepared at first, once the enemy has figured out that both blades are connected the tables will turn. The position of one blade will always determine the position of the other blade, thus making the weapon a lot more predictable. On top of that your actual moveset with a double-bladed lightsaber is greatly limited as a lot of maneuvers you can pull of with a single blade would end up slicing yourself in half. Also, the weapon itself is vulnerable and the long handle a prime target for enemy swordstrikes, if it gets hit it may get destroyed or the sword is getting turned into two swords, forcing you to suddenly adapt you style, if you are even remotely as good with a single blade or dual wielding. In the book there´s a rivalry between Bane and a Zabrak at the academy they are attending. What I have said above is basically the gist of what master Kas´im who is pretty much the most talented swordfighter at the time tells Bane about the weapon his rival is using.

As someone who has trained with actual martial weapons I can say, with absolute certainty, a double bladed lightsaber would be a TERRIBLE idea. The problem is that the lightsaber blade is LETHAL, even when touched with a gentle degree of pressure. The "staff" design is fine when it's made of wood ... because bumping a piece of wood against your leg or chest causes no harm ... but replace a length of wood with a bar of lightning hot plasma that literally cuts through flesh like a hot knife through butter, and you end up carving life threatening wounds into yourself with casual contact. EVERY time you strike out with one end of the saber staff, you point the opposite end back TOWARD YOURSELF. If you opponent strikes your staff with enough force, he can EASILY knock it hard enough to bump against you ... turning your attack against your enemy into an attack against yourself. Any time you point your own weapon toward yourself, that's a BAD idea! ...And don't even get me started on reverse-grip sword fighting! Ugh! The idiocy!

I’d use a saberstaff, it would be able to split in two, and i would be able to have only one blade active if I choose. There would be a little button in the middle that could activate both blades. The color would also be either a deep forest green or a beautiful emerald green.

IRL Staff techniques are more than enough. One of the big advantages of polearms is the ability to move in sections and improve your reach. The double-bladed lightsaber limits you to the center portion of the weapon which defeats the purpose.

I sure hope they bring Exar Kun back into canon. He's much like Revan, in that both characters had a fundamental impact on the times they lived in. They made eras of Star Wars storytelling their's and it would be weird to see them replaced by others. If Kun's era changes too much in its make-up in the canon continuity, then alright, introduce new characters. I'd be somewhat miffed by that, but I could understand it. I would at least like some references then, though. You gotta pay some respect to Legends. Great video as always, but one small correction: the name is Vodo-Siosk Baas, not Vodo-Siosk Droma. You mixed him up with Ulic Qel-Droma.

you basically just spent the whole video repeating the same thing over and over just in slightly different ways. how about the "jedi defector and eventual sith lord, exar kun used a double bladed lightsaber. he was a symbol of jedi failure and to erase their failure from the minds of the people, they discouraged the use of double bladed lightsabers". there, i just saved people a whole bunch of time. perhaps you did this all on purpose though to draw out your video's length?

Now, as someone who both owns and has fought with a saberstaff. In real life, it's a tricky weapon to get used to. In lore however, it has several features we do not have and it's THOSE, I think, that turn it into a truly devastating weapon that Exar Kun is known for. First of all, it didn't just have two blades, it have multiple power settings and blade lengths for both blades, as well as being able to activate either of the blades as well as both, and it's the way Exar mixed all these things around that gives the staff it's true power. Take it one step further and add in a coupler and you give yourself access to even more options; Let's say we have a staff. Both blades have a normal, long and short setting and this can be changed on the fly as well as turning on or off each blade and disconnecting the weapon into 2 sabers. 1. Turn one blade into long mode and the other off with both handles together, you've got a greatsword. Play the reach game and keep your opponent back. If your weapon is constructed right, they might not even be able to tell it's a staff. point your "pommel" at them as you wind back for a swing and turn on your second blade in long mode for a suprise attack! 2. tight space? Turn one blade into short mode, disconect handles and store one on your belt. You've got a fast and agile weapon that'll fuction well where a normal lightsaber will struggle with space. 3. Both blades on, mid size, handles connected; the classic saberstaff. Keep it in motion and spinning to distract lesser experianced foes with the blades before striking. Turn blades on and off when you need to sweep it through your body or for suprise attacks. 4. Spilt blades, both mid sized. You've basicly got eskrima sticks. use faints and bluffs to work your blades past your opponents guard. Start a slash with one blade and then the other, pick one to follow through with. 5. Split hilts, one normal one short; rapier and dagger combination. One tempo reposts a-plenty and a weapon for both long and short. Keep switching the sides around if you're ambidexrous, which you should be to some extent if you're using two weapons. 6. Put it all together. Your opponent starting to react to your sequences? Switch it up! Unless they've studied all these different styles like you have (a lot of extra work, but no-one said using the staff was easy) you'll find one that they can't deal with.

I'd make a saber staff that could split into two lightsabers with the press of a button. I'd study Juyo, Jarkai, and Niman to work with the weapon in the fused and split forms as well as a single lightsaber if one is destroyed.

One additional weakness that's really notable: since you constantly need to mind the end that's on YOUR side, you can't control the direction of the one that's on your opponent's side as well. Also since you can't close the gap with your saber, you don't have as much raw leverage, so you're less flexible and can use less force. So to compensate for all of the drawbacks, you need to CONSTANTLY be on the move, and use flair to confuse and fool your opponent. This might be why it's so frowned upon by the order, it is not a weapon that you can really be "fair" with.

A "staff" so to speak, has always tended to be a weapon of defense. Historically it has been seen as a gentle weapon, elegant as well as a tool integrated well enough that even a traveler could use one for walking. That said, I guess the view does change a bit when both ends of the staff can now cut you into pieces. Kinda changes up its view as a "gentle weapon of defense" lol

Someone really needs to make a video of like 50 different Videos from him just with the "IN THIS VIDEO EXPOSÉ I WILL SHOW YOU..."

They are also unwieldy in confined spaces which is almost everywhere inside spaceships, stations and buildings and they require extra level of mastery to use them efficinetly in such small spaces. Jedi also rarely fought alone which once again required extra caution while using these, both from user and his partner to not accidentally slash or be accidentally slashed by it during combat. Sith faced same problem with confined spaces but they had nothing against killing hence why they went that extra mile to train with saber-staffs... but after Bane and his "reform" of the order they worked from shadows and from behind the scene and it is harder to concealed carry longer hilt for the staff (you can't wear long robes on all planets without sticking out from the crowd)... there is also problem with training after Bane because if master didn't use it, the student had to rely on self study becasue there was noone around to teach it which adds yet another extra mile to master saber-staff.

If the Jedi spent less time saying, "X leads to the dark side" and more time helping people, the Star Wars galaxy would be a better place.

Lucasfilm used this to explain a contradiction in the Thrawn Trilogy. They mention a "Clone Rebellion" in those books which was originally supposed to be a reference to the Clone Wars. Lucasfilm later said the Clone Rebellion was the Rebellion in Battlefront 2 to fix this error. Pretty clever.

I think that lightsaber duel was something extremely rare at the time of the movies and some time before. It could happened only with main characters or in a fights versus Grievous. Most of the jedi does not ever encounter another LS-user in a real fight. Never in their entire lives. They do mostly some diplomatic missions, sometimes fighting vs dozen of droids or single bounty hunter. And that's all. So they don't need to carry such complicated hard-to-learn weapon as double-bladed LS, which is designed to dominate in fights versus single-bladed LS-user.

I hate double bladed lightsabers. My reason for it is mostly personal as I have an interest in historical weaponry. A single blade is a concept that makes sense and has historical comparison to real swords. A double bladed lightsaber has no historical comparison and doesn't practically work. Why you ask? It's very simple. Any real martial technique using a pole weapon utilizes reach and full length of the weapon. This requires the wielder to move their grip along the full length of the shaft. If a double bladed lightsaber restricts to user's grip to the center of the weapon, reach is not utilized and therefore the weapon is not practical. If it was practical, there would be double bladed swords throughout medieval history. Outside of a few rare concepts that were never widely used, you will find no comparison.

Fantastic and very informative video! As a follower, I've always wondered about dual wielding sabers, as seen in some games and by anikin in 2. It seems like having two separate blades would be less offensive and more cumbersome to swing about, maybe?

Two pieces of friendly advice: stop calling your video's 'video exposé', even if technically true it sounds a bit pretentious and gets annoying after watching two videos in a row. Another gripe I have is with how you keep cutting back to the same low resolution crop of your channel thumbnail, it is just not something visually pleasing to look at for more than a few seconds. Other than that, you make some pretty good content, keep it up!

Love the content and the effort you guys put into these videos. After the latest movie, its rekindled my love for the universe and what was extended (now Legend) universe! One thing that keeps me coming back, is your endings. Its so strange to my ears and just sits way out in left field - what started off the tradition? And the way you pronounce it all?

A lot of the reason was also the difference in traditional weapon sets. The Jedi came from a culture which favored swords for melee while the Sith were more bladed-staff weapon oriented and illustrations of them from before lightsaber days often show them with those double-naginata like weapons or blade-flanged maces instead of just swords. Ancient Jedi on the other hand are almost always shown carrying a katana (which makes sense considering how knights are identified with swords more than any other weapon).

So just out of curiosity why is it that the temple guards were equipped with double bladed sabers if they were so frowned upon by the Jedi. Genuinely curious if anybody has an idea.
