A perfect excerpt from the longer interview. It answered a lot of questions I have about Mormons and politics.

Mormons were democrats first. Bringham Young was a Democrat because he was a polygamist.

conservatism hurts people, as does the church and the actions and teachings of the church drive people to the Republican Party, going directly against the gospels and the book of acts and the fruits of the spirit! there is no rational reason to be choosing conservative cruelty!

When he talks about souls waiting to occupy fetuses, does this mean Mormons believe in a sort of reincarnation? Or do they believe new souls are constantly being manufactured, waiting for host bodies?

Catholics are abandoning the Democratic Party today because of abortion. I am Catholic and most of my friends from church are Republican (as am I). Ronald Reagan's presidency was the beginning of change in the GOP (beginning with his primary run in 1976) regarding abortion. Evangelicals and Catholics Together made a political impact within the GOP over moral and social issues which today defines the party. As a Catholic I can honestly say that the Papacy of John Paul II did a lot to re-orient Catholicism back toward the issue of the Right to Life. In the 1960s Vatican II was going on and a lot of dissidents were hopeful that "progressive" ideas of morality would be allowed in the future. Fortunately, Vatican II only updated the liturgy of the Mass and made some clarifications of doctrine. Vatican II did NOT change any essential doctrine previously held by the Catholic Church.

Mormons are one of the reasons the reason the repulican party started. The Mormons groomed children and polygamy slavery abortion. Honestly, the democratic party, fits perfectly with Brigham Youngs beliefs now and first Mormons.

its sad that 80% of Latter Day Saints, like 80% ofevangeliclas oppose science and the top command of christ, to love. it sad how they oppose Christ's condemnation of the love of money, oppose the collective attitude practiced and mandated in the gospels and Acts, and oppose what the Bible actually says about abortion, condoning it!!!!

A great interview, and Decker is probably right that Roe was the moment in time when Church members went Republican - but Decker seems to think that Roe and the Church's response, was the cause. I think a strong counterargument could be made that Roe was a watershed moment that filtered a lot of moderates out of the progressive camp and redefined politics across the nation. When I remember that the South was shifting from blue to red during this same period, I feel a lot less confident in attributing Mormon Republicanism to the Church's response to Roe. It seems more likely that progressives finally began advocating for positions (such as abortion) that were important enough and uncompromising enough to motivate single-issue voting.

I don't get it. Trump is like Paanchi in Helaman 1: 5-7 5 Nevertheless, it came to pass that Pahoran was appointed by the voice of the people.... 6 And it came to pass that Pacumeni, when he saw that he could not obtain the judgment-seat, he did unite with the voice of the people. 7 But behold, Paanchi, and that part of the people that were desirous that he should be their governor, was exceedingly wroth; therefore, he was about to flatter away those people to rise up in rebellion against their brethren. January 6th rebellion anyone? So if BoM is "blueprint" for "our day", why is it ignored and Utah is LDS red state? Which is it Mormons? The Nephites all started falling by joining the "oath keepers"/ "king men" that came after.
