"This essay sucks.”
I’ve just passed a criticism on someone else's work. I've provided no explanation as to why I think it sucks and I've made no attempt to suggest ways in which it can be improved. Have I provided any real value here or am I just being a poo? Yep, I'm just being a 5* Turd. And this is precisely the problem that plagues many of the essays we write, especially under pressure. But don't worry, I'm here to help you turn it around.
At the end of this video, you'll go from making vague comments like:
"this is weak evidence.”
To intelligent comments like:
"this uncontrolled, non-randomised study provides weak evidence due to several confounding factors and biases. Further controlled, longitudinal studies are needed to investigate this further".
To get any hope of seeing a first class mark, you have to provide critical analysis of the evidence you use to back up your points. But critical analysis isn't just passing a mean comment and moving on. Instead it involves constructively commenting on the level of evidence, study design, confounding and bias. So let's get into it and learn some stock phrases and principles that get examiners excited. #essay #university #college

Hi Doctor Shaene, This has helped so much! i've just been thrust into a short course that is straight in at level 6 education with no previous level 4/5 or 6 experience and they were asking for critical analysis in our work without really going into what it is or how it should be done, you're a life saver with this and the Essay video.

Quick question, do we need to comment on all 4 elements of critical analysis (level of evidence, study design, confounding factors and systematic biases) or only what feels relevant??

Ideally all of them if you have the space and time. But realistically in times conditions, pick the best and most insightful comments and put them in 😁
