Matching colors of stain and paint is an important part of finishing every woodworking project. Today we show you some of the trials AND errors that we went through in our effort to find the perfect color. Follow to the end to learn the one step I left out to get the right match.

Thank you so much! You just really helped me! I’ve spent countless hours trying to figure out this stain stuff. Found out SW could do custom and you helped me find out the best way to go about it for my stair treads, banister, and Newell posts. Thanks again!

@@WoodworkingWithWes , you are showing what happens in the real world. How a contractor of fine reputation handles an error. They own up to it, take full responsibility and make the corrections necessary BEFORE the customer has any clue that anything was amiss. Have a female on your team approve the color match BEFORE you ever show it to the customer. Women are constantly matching their purses and shoes, they know colors like nobody's business.

The absolute best stain and lacqure supplier is Columbia the best products and great color matches if your not able to mad science your own.

Wes. If you don’t use veneer plywood for your shaker door panels, what do you use? Do you plain down stock? I’m having real issues with staining shaker doors as the A1 domestic veneer panels and solid stock doesn’t quite match though they’re the same species. Also, I use Sherwin Williams vinyl sealer before I spray their precat lacquer. Is the vinyl sealer necessary? Thank you sir. Jefferson

Hi Jeff...I always use solid wood panels for my wood doors to eliminate those issues. The vinyl sealer does make for a better final coat. If you are getting good results, I would continue to use it. Thanks for watching. Wes

Lacquer is responsible for your color shift as well. To a bigger degree than solid vs. Venere

I Havent ever had the color be off like that from solid wood and veneer, usually the solid wood is lighter than the veneer because it doesn't absorb the Stain as much, it can be difficult sometimes when you have a veneered panel in a solid wood frame door. Do you only use pre cat on your kitchens? I love pre cat but I am scared to send it out in a kitchen Job I use post cat because its more durable, its not as nice of a finish as pre cat though

Hi Adam...I have used pre-cat lacquer as my top coat for years with good results. I don't use veneer panels in my doors and so I don't have issues that way but I often have veneer end panels next to solid doors and that is the situation I was demonstrating in this video. BTW...she liked my darker colored door better than her sample and so I did come out ok 😃. Thank you for your visit and appreciate the info. Wes

Is your top coat a SW product?

It's not a Sherwin Williams product but they do however make a pre cat lacquer that would work fine. Check your local supplier. Thank you for watching. Wes
